Millsaps won what appeared to be a wild contest against NAIA foe Belhaven College (Jackson, MS) on Tuesday night at Millsaps.  The Majors won on a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the ninth inning by John Pacillo to prevail 16-15.  Millsaps held an 8-1 lead at one point before Belhaven rallied to take a 10-8 advantage.  The teams swapped a couple of additional big innings before Pacillo's game-winning blast.  Millsaps improves to 5-1 on the year.

I don't know if it will work to cut-and-paste the box score I received in an email from Millsaps after yesterday's game.  I listened on the radio since it was raining and therefore bad for my cold and for photography.  So far Millsaps has been playing in less than ideal conditions.

Millsaps will broadcast their baseball games today through Sunday.  I think there will be a 15 minute pregame show for most of these but the time I'm listing will be the starting time in the Central Time Zone (all games are being played in the ETZ).

Thursday vs. LaGrange @ 3:00 p.m.
Friday vs. LaGrange @ 2:00 p.m.
Saturday vs. Piedmont @ noon
Sunday vs. Piedmont @ 1:00 p.m

Radio Link:  http://www.espnradio1240.com/listenlive.php

(The broadcast schedule went back and forth between doing the baseball or the basketball tournament.  I think it finally was decided to do the baseball but I won't be 100% sure until I actually here the broadcast this afternoon.)

Trinity just defeated Whitworth 9-5 in the first game of its trip to Phoenix.  They scored 4 in the 9th, highlighted by what sounded like a Nick Vera Triple driving in 2 runs.
Will be playing again at 8pm CST.

Trinity's game Friday against W&L has been moved to a 3pm MT start because of the threat of rain.

The game will be webcast from FASTBAT and Trinity http://stream.krtu.org:9000/krtu-sports.m3u

Trinity dropped the nightcap againt Hastings College NAIA 8-5.

Tough game for the Majors yesterday...They knocked out LaGange's ace in the third, then can't score a run after he leaves the game...LaGrange 13 Millsaps 7....Beautiful day in South Georgia.

Great weekend of DIII ball in and around Atlanta. Yesterday at LaGrange, today at Emory for the Rawlings Classic and then Saturday Emory in the morning and then to Oglethorpe in the afternoon. Sunday over to Piedmont for the Lions and Majors. This is a preview weekend for Millsaps in the SCAC alignment...do they have the pitching for four games in four days against good baseball teams? You know they'll see both LaGrange and Piedmont's 1 and 2's....

Bob--The Millsaps announcer said yesterday that the Millsaps vs. Piedmont games for Saturday and Sunday may be combined into a Saturday doubleheader.  It may have something to do with weather or travel and getting the kids back for Monday class and at the moment I only mention it as a possibility and not a certainty.

The Piedmont website still show Saturday and Sunday so this may be one of those game day decisions.

On the pitching you are absolutely right.  Coach Page said on his talk show Monday that he was glad to have to chance to see what some of these young pitchers can do.  Yesterday Millsaps starter Jay Hollenbeck had probably his worst start in his 3 year career--a balk, hit at least 3 batter, etc.--so Millsaps ended up with a string of pitchers.  Like with football, I think Millsaps wants to win all of their games but they also look at this pre-conference time as a time to develop for conference play.

Infielddad,

I noticed your post on the west region rankings board regarding early '90s Trinity baseball and had to chime in...

You really can't compare the Trinity teams of the early to mid 90's to any of the current era teams.  The landscape of baseball in Texas is so drastically different between those days and the current D3 era.  At that time, Trinity was the only D3 in the entire state, and D3 in general was a complete unknown in the region.  The non-conference slate consisted entirely of D1's, D2's, and NAIA's, who at the time were on par with most of the higher level D1's of the Southland and Southwest conferences.

As for conference games, those early teams used to bus to games in Memphis, Sewanee, Jackson, and Conway.  Image this itinerary, get on a bus(and not the greyhound style, but more like a 25 person church bus) at midnight, drive 12-16 hours, get off the bus and play a double header.  Needless to say, the team's record didn't truly reflect the circumstances with which the team was faced. Hughes and Scannell have done a great job of adding leadership, stability and structure to the program and elevating it to its current stature in D3, but some of the credit has to go to Bob King and Jeff Brown.

Bob King realized the only chance for the team to be competitive in such an expansive conference was for them to fly to conference games.  He allocated funds for nice equipment, jerseys, and bats and actual food on road trips, instead of a bag of sliced bread for PB and J sandwiches.  He also made a concerted effort to schedule more D3's instead of the Notre Dame's, UTSA's, and Texas State's of the world.  In other words, he made winning baseball games at Trinity a priority.

Jeff Brown was able to recruit some fairly solid ball players despite all of the inherent disadvantages of being somewhat of a pariah on the Texas baseball landscape.  He started on some pretty decent USC football and baseball teams in the early 80's along with such names as Marcus Allen, Jack Del Rio, Mark McGuire, and Randy Johnson.  He was a top prospect for the Dodgers until an injury prematurely ended his career.  Needless to say, he had a fair amount of recruiting credibility.  He left the team before he could finish the job, but he laid a fairly solid foundation for what would occur down the road.

Bmo, great information.  Thank you. I didn't realize the transition into DIII that took place during that time frame.  Seems like the ASC came into existence within the last 10-15 years which I never knew. Also, I did not know about the calibre of the opposition outside of conference.  Actually, the teams since 2000 had hoped to play DI teams and it just could not get done until this season.
What I did know is  that Trinity had some very good players in that 1990-97 time frame.  In fact, I have heard a lot about a flame throwing right hander who set all kinds of strikeout records.  There was some mention of a catcher who could play a little bit, and a few others, but most of the talk was about that righty!!!!
I will have to interject one point of some clarification.  Even though there was some air travel to other out of TX. cities, the budget  for bats or  actual food on those road trips wasn't much different.
With that said, Bob King does deserve credit along with the Coaches.  From what I know, the 1990's Trinity would not have been able to find our son in California. Our family knows that opportunity was available because of Bob's impact in the AD and Coach Scannell being able to recruit in CA.
I have posted several times that our son had multiple options/invites to transfer, including one to play shortstop in the ACC.  While being a starting SS in the ACC was hugely tempting, his experience at Trinity,  the quality of the education,  the relationship with Coach Scannell and the opportunties he provided with summer leagues and professional scouts, the respect and friendships with other coaches and his teammates, kept him firmly planted in San Antonio, until the phone rang and the Jays scout congratulated him.

Bmo

I'm not so sure about the exact budgetary figures, they obviously didn't let the inmates run the asylum.  But trust me, there was a fairly significant difference in the quality of the equipment and travel arrangements, pre-Bob King, as to post Bob King.  We were always told, or assumed,  that the school was still holding some of the cost of the field renovation out of the operating budget.  But man, those foam front mesh back practice hats were ten years too old to be original and ten years too new to be retro.

The new field and the Bell Center also had a fairly big impact on the baseball team as well as the majority of the athletic programs at the university.  They showed fairly well to recruits in comparison to the majority of the other facilities at that time.  Probably not so much now...

I'm sure I know the righty of whom you speak, however, I don't profess to be him.  I alway considered strikeouts to be a little fascist.  I used to rack up some HBP's though, mostly wildness, only a little spite...

Infielddad, I think that your son made the smart choice.

Unless you are going to play in the majors, you should be getting the education at this time in his life.  I am glad he is having a good experience.

D3 is Texas is very competitive now.  I think we see very good baseball.  The Trinity-UTD series was exciting.

The ASC was founded in 1996.

Trinity dropped a close 6-5 loss to W&L this afternoon in Peoria....  very unusual territory to be starting the season 3-4.  All the credit goes to a scrappy W&L team who fought back from a 5-1 deficite to win 6-5.

11 AM MST rematch with Whitworth tomorrow, and the final game follows at 3 (if a loss) or 7 (if a win).

W&L will meet Hastings College and loseer play at 3, winners at 7...  Both TU games should be webcast:

Only games versus Whitworth are in-region.  The W&L loss is not a West Region game for Trinity.  (Hastings NE is NAIA.)
