Heading into the 7th, it's 6-4 in favor of the 'Roos.  P-P scored four runs in the sixth, and AC got one back to get it to the current score.  From looking at the line score only, it looks like two errors played a big part in P-P's big inning.  Wonder if Coach Carl stuck with Chermak through the inning, because there's really not a ton of depth to back him up, especially since he went with Frost after Rushing got pulled last night.

well, the game has gone final.  two runs for Pomona in the top of the 10th and AC could not recover.  our bats disappeared as the game wore on, and our pitching got worn down.  too bad, but a good experience for our very young team.

I don't think I'll be insulting any Austin fans by saying that their team was a little thin on pitching this year, giving up right at 6 runs per game and not having a tremendous amount of depth.  In the Crossover and the SCAC Tournament they gave up 5.8 runs per game but they won 5 of 6 by scoring just over 10 runs per game.  When the bats were hot this season Austin was very tough and they just weren't quite hot enough today.
(CORRECTION:  The era for the season was right at 6 per game and runs given up was at about 6.6 per game.)

Josh, I think you met the father of a Millsaps football player who also takes photos at the Millsaps football games.  It's rare that I actually get photographed, but he took this photograph of me at the Millsaps Homecoming game last year:

I know this will shock a lot of people, but I also tend to get a little wordy when writing to my blog--I just happens to be long-winded on a wider range of subject.

Frank,

I've seen your pictures, and they are great.  It's a shame not many people take you up on your offer.  I only wish that I as in a couple of the pictures, Millsaps is lucky to have such a dedicated person to provide such a service.

Thanks for that compliment.  There was a time when I considered trying to take photos of both teams in a game instead of just the Millsaps team but it really makes the work load unbearable.  I know for a fact that the vast majority of athletes at Millsaps are outstanding young men and women and I'm glad I can capture these important moments for them.

I would also say with 99% certainty that a vast majority of the athletes at all of the other SCAC schools are outstanding young men and women and I wish I could capture some of their important moments as well.  To be honest, I hope that at some point in time the athletic departments at the other SCAC schools will see the photos of the Millsaps athletes and it will encourage them to do the same for their athletes.  Maybe that will happen as the years go by.

Hello everyone. I would just like to introduce myself as Jimmy and I am Nick Vera's (Trinity) older brother.  I was only introduced to the board not long ago, but I have tried to keep up as much as possible and I have found the board very informative and very entertaining.  It is nice to see different oppinions from all over the SCAC and even some outsiders.
Of course I will be biased and put my vote out there for Nick as player of the year as I have once before on a previous post.  But I strongly believe he has the numbers to be a strong contender for this award.  Do I have total blinders on here or does anyone agree?

Welcome to the board Jim.  If Nick hit against everybody like he hit against Millsaps this year then he would be a shoo-in for the National POTY.

To the surprise of no one, I would pick Hunter Owen for the SCAC POTY while recognizing that there are several very good candidates to choose from.  Hunter stepped in for 2005 and 2006 POTY Garner Wetzel and basically put up the same number.  Some of those numbers and their ranking in the SCAC were:

Batting Average--.404--6th in SCAC
Slugging Percentage--.776--1st
On Base Percentage--.520--3rd
Doubles--23--1st
Home Runs--11--1st
RBI's--70--1st
Stolen Bases--21--2nd
And the list goes on.

---You've got the high batting average and on-base percentage.
---You've got the power shown by leading the league in both doubles and home runs (over half of his hits were for extra bases).
---And you have the speed that turned 21 of the stops at 1st base into a free pass to 2nd base.

There's no doubt that Millsaps had a huge hole to fill in the lineup with the departure of Wetzel and Hunter filled that hole completely.  I'm glad he's just a junior (or maybe a sophomore--he only played 4 games and had 5 at bats last year so I'm guessing that could be a medical redshirt).

Hunter Owen is definitely the candidate I would have gone with.  I'm fairly certain he got the Austin College vote.

Frank,
Hunter Owen would qualify for a medical redshirt if he played only in the first half of the season in 2006 and did not play in more than 20% of the team's scheduled games.  In Hunter's case, he would meet the 20% criteria.  Without looking it up, I'm not sure about in which part of the season Hunter played.

One disclaimer: the NCAA has just expanded the medical hardship rule from 20% to 30% for Division I.  Not sure if it applies to Division III.  The rule is also applied retroactively to the fall of 2003.

BigJim,
While Nick may be the position player with the best overall skills in the SCAC, history says his chances of winning Player of the Year honors are very much tied to the success of the team.  Going back to 2001, Page, Sharp, Yglesias, Armstrong and Wetzel all played on teams that won the SCAC or a team that made the regional.
Unfortunately for Nick, I think chances for the honor are too much linked to the team's results as opposed to his performance.
With that said, our entire family is really rooting for him to get some good news in early June.  He has worked so hard and come so far that it would be only right for him to get that chance to show what he can do in professional baseball.
Please tell Nick the Armstrongs say hello...and thanks for taking it easy on that hits record. ;)

BigJim

Infielddad,

I will no doubt pass on the hello.
We appreciate you all thinking of Nick and hoping for the good news in June.  It can not come soon enough for us.  The suspense is incredible, as you know.  He has had a couple of strong work outs and with a few more scheduled we are hoping for the best.  If you all can throw in a couple of short prayers, I am sure that would not hurt anything.
I try to keep up with Jason's success through Nick.  Best of luck to him, we all know he too has worked very hard for what he has acheived.
Thanks again.

Where is the ALLSCAC team?? Seems like it should already be out...
