Ahh, Point Special I didn't even see your post (3 above) before I wrote my last post...Puget Sound had a great team that year.  But Point was just flat out better.  I think that Puget Sound would have been able to handle Lawrence or Sul Ross St...we just got the short end of the stick facing you guys first.  I don't know if you were at that game, but that was a sold out pack area and a great atmosphere for a college basketball game.  But Point was very good and savvy.

But you got to give Puget Sound a little credit...even though the final score wasn't close, the game was closer then it appeared on paper, especially in the 2nd half.  I think UPS "wore out"  Point and Point didn't quite have the same legs against Lawrence the following night.  If Point had played Lawrence the first night I do think the game would have been a different story.  But that's just my 2 cents   :)

Yep, I was on Point's team.  And in both games, 04 and 05, UPS made great runs and cut double digit leads down to about 8...  Coach Bridgeland said specifically after the 05 game, but I think after the 04 game, too, that the sheer size of Point was something they weren't used to.  Especially when we went into our 1-2-2 zone, we could go with all 5 guys 6'4" or taller, and three of 'em 6'7" or taller.  It was with this zone, too, that helped us run away with the second National Championship game against Rochester...  U of R's Coach Neer dubbed it the Pterodactyl zone...!

We knew and respected UPS both times we played them... you don't have the success that they had (and have continued to have) without being good teams.  But we really prided ourselves on our defense and the 79 pts we gave up in 04 was the highest number of points we gave up until the National Championship game against Williams (82) that year.  It also was the fewest points UPS had scored all year.

One of the things that UPS relies on is teams turning the ball over due to their pressure.  Teams try to rush too much and they ultimately beat themselves by not being able to take care of the ball.  We got layup after layup and Nick Bennett got a career high 37 points because we DID take care of the ball and had secondary break opportunities that were 2-1 all night.  But, like I said, even we fell into the trap (pardon the pun) of rushing and UPS made a run both years.

And the 04 game wasn't a sellout... it would take half of Tacoma to sell that beast out... but it was a great crowd.  It wasn't anything like the second round game we had at Gustavus Adolphus, but it was about half as big and it was just a completely different setup and atmosphere.

Point Special thanks for the first-person recall of a great sectional.

I remember that Lawrence play-by-play announcer doing a very good job.

Where is he now?  Anyone know?

My ballot is in.

Mine's now in.  Not too difficult this week. Teams clearly took care of business and others are obviously on the decline.

My "to watch" list is also starting to shorten dramatically as we near the end of the season.

Just tallied your poll for the week! ;)

We're up to six - hoping for at least the nine of last week.

Mr. Ypsi

You guys spoiled me last week - by this time we had nine ballots.

This week we're stuck on six - I LIKE being spoiled! ;)

Mr. Ypsi

#7 has arrived and been tallied.  Still hoping for more - right now there are some ties and near-ties to be resolved.

Mr. Ypsi

We've now reached the stated deadline, but I'm still hoping to hear from two regulars.  Either way, the poll will be out later this evening.

Mr. Ypsi

I surrender - seven it is. :(

Sorry, was a traveling and working man this week.

I couldn't recall any recent posts from you on any board - I was getting worried.  Glad it was travel and work, not something more ominous. :)
