This year's Augie team would be solid in any CCIW season, Ralph. I'm not saying that the 2010-11 edition of the Doggies would win any random CCIW season into which they were parachuted -- that's certainly not the case -- but they'd acquit themselves well. It's a very good team. I have no hesitation in saying that they're worthy of the Top Ten.

I realize that some of you outside the CCIW's precincts are looking for an excuse to penalize Augie, and, seeing as how the Rock Islanders have just lost to 15-10 North Central in what's been a down year for the league anyway, you feel as though you now have that excuse. That's fine. But consider this: Augie lost by four on North Central's floor, and at least Hoops Fan is beginning to catch on to the fact that this Cardinals squad is not just any 15-10 team. Their post-holidays turnaround has been nothing short of miraculous, and they're going to be a very tough out if they somehow get into the D3 tourney.

I doubt they drop or drop much the way I'm ranking teams.  They are a convincing defensive team, but compared to others I have ranked ahead their offense is what is holding them back.

Didn't look at North Central last week but will probably look at them this week.

I had Augie #9. I might keep them there.
It was Senior Night at North Central.

Augustana    11-2    11-3
North Central (Ill.)    11-3
Wheaton (Ill.)    9-5
Carthage    9-5
Illinois Wesleyan    8-5  9-5

If IWU beats Augie on Tuesday night, we have co-champs and a 3-way tie for 3rd/4th.

Who gets left out?

If there's a three-way tie for third, Carthage is the odd man out. The Red Men were swept by Wheaton, while Carthage and IWU split and Wheaton and IWU split.

However, if that scenario does occur, Illinois Wesleyan gets the third seed and Wheaton gets the fourth seed. Why? Because IWU split with #1 North Central, while Wheaton got swept by the Cards.

So, for those of you who keep track of rooting interests, both Carthage and Wheaton will be cheering for Augustana on Tuesday night.

What's the odds on each of top 5 teams from CCIW getting the AQ?

It really depends upon where the tourney is held. Home-court advantage is huge. An Augustana loss to Illinois Wesleyan on Tuesday means that North Central would host the tournament. That's a long busride for Augustana, and a huge psychological loss as well, considering that Augie appeared to have sole possession of the CCIW crown (and the hosting privileges) pretty much in the bag throughout most of January and February.

Yeah, but you could use an eraser and then pencil in the year and use that comment for any Augustana team of the Grey Giovanine era. The big (literally) difference this year is that Augie is so freakin' huge that it's extremely hard to compete with that team on the boards.

Thanks, Gregory.  That is what suspected, but I did not find the tie-breakers on the CCIW web site at first glance.

You might want to read it again. I brain-cramped on who the #1 seed would be, even though the point regarding IWU being #3 and Wheaton being #4 still stands. ;)

I think that my brain stopped when I saw that Carthage was "odd-man-out".

Help me out here.

From the CCIW website:

QuoteMen's & Women's Basketball
Seeding will be determined by regular season finish. Ties are broken by the following:

1. Head-to-head competition.
2. Record against team(s) above the tie beginning with the highest ranked team.
3. Record vs. team or teams in 3 rd place. If still tied, go to the next place for determination, et cetera.
4. Road record against conference schools.
5. Record in their seven conference games.
6. The point spread of the tied teams' head-to head competition.
7. Coin toss

If Augie were to lose to IWU, Augustana and NCC would be tied through #4.  What does number five even mean?

They'd have an identical record, with losses against each other and IWU and Carthage.  The road/home are the same.  I know Augie wins #6 - they're +12.  So what is #5?  and how could NCC possibly win it?

5. Record in their seven conference games.

This should say "Record in their last seven conference games."  And this is where NCC would win (if IWU beats Augie).

Gotcha - that makes sense.

Currently you have only one orphan; Hoops Fan and I each currently have two.  Whether or not a matter of pride is up to the individual poster! :D

Aside from a school in Ohio and one in Connecticut, you align more with me than HF.  As a matter of pride, that is again something the poster must decide! ;D

For the mathematically impaired, we have only 3 ballots so far.  Below average for a Sunday night, but not yet worrisome.  (Especially since there is a 'monster' game Tuesday night [Augie @ IWU] which is likely to delay the usual publication of the PP! ;))

I'm in.  I felt like the top ten was pretty straightforward, but that 11-25 were a total crapshoot.  I have a feeling that there will be a strong consensus top 10, followed by votes all over the map.

You're close, but after 6 ballots we have a unanimous top ELEVEN.  After that, it's pretty chaotic (though as of now, only 4 orphans).

Mr. Ypsi

We've been at nine ballots for way too long now!  Let's at least hit a dozen.

You've got extra time this week, since I'll be glued to the Augie @ IWU game!  Please submit ballots by midnight EST.
