If VCU faces Kentucky in the final, VCU will have played a team from each of the Big-6 conference during the tournament (plus Butler).

That's a pretty amazing proof that the smaller conference schools can hang with the big boys.

I will, too.  The parity in D-1 has become incredible.  I have a hard time figuring whether I want Butler ("Hoosiers" fame) or VCU (from First Four to Final Four) to win.

Is it parity or is the D1 talent pool just so watered down because so many 'star' players opt for the NBA early.

Look at the last 3 NBA drafts and count the number of Seniors drafted in round 1.

Most pundits I've heard say it's the latter - the talent level is down.

I watched the I regional action with interest given last week's discussion regarding ranking the best teams and tournament results. Are Butler and VCU the best teams in their regions? The argument can be made both ways.

A local radio show put up a question on facebook asking whether or not the final four represents the best four teams in the country. The first response struck me as relevant to what we discussed here:
Quoteno, probably not, and that's the point. we're so obsessed with finding the "best" team (ahem, bcs), instead of just finding a champion. it's what makes this tournament and the playoffs of other sports so intriguing. no one really thinks the 2007 giants were a better team than the 2007 patriots...they just beat them in one game and it was awesome.

Parity is Parity. Doesn't matter how it came about...

I agree with almost everything Bilas says, so I'd second gordonmann's post. And I'd also agree with the post ziggy quoted. The best team doesn't always win the tourney. That's why it is so popular.

Saw a funny line from a SI writer...If college basketball used the BCS, Ohio State and Kansas would be playing in the title game. VCU and Butler would be facing off in the Las Vegas Bowl  :D

[EDIT] Completely off topic, but Whitworth head coach Jim Hayford has been reported as the new head coach for the Eagles of Eastern Washington University (Big Sky). I'm assuming d3hoops will link the final press release from the Spokesman at some point, but you can read the current article posted in the NWC thread.

UConn may have won the tournament but they didn't get all the number one votes in the final ESPN/USA Today poll: http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/polls?poll=3

Mr. Y,

Will the first Posters' Poll be for the week ending January 1st or January 8th?

I was thinking more like the 15th, but I guess I could put in the work a week early if necessary.

Mr. Ypsi

Let's start with games thru the 8th.  I'll try to have it completed by the 10th.

New voters are welcome to join in.

Mr. Ypsi

Reminder to potential voters (hopefully MANY potential voters! ;D) to start studying up.  The first poll of the season will be this weekend.  As before, I hope to get results out by Tuesday evening, so please PM me by 6pm EST on Tuesday.  (There are usually very few games on Sunday that would affect the rankings, so preliminary ballots can usually be done early.)

Is it faux pas to discuss our preliminary ballots?

Why should it be? Discussion is healthy and informative. If you know something that I'm not aware of, that would influence my ballot, then I'd love to hear it. 8-)
