Mr. Ypsi

Kind of interesting that the two teams we seem most divided on are the two who tied for 11th.  Williams had 6 votes between 8th and 10th, then a 24th and NV.  WPI had 3 votes in the top 6, then 3 votes in the mid-teens, then 23rd and NV.  Anyone on any side of the voting care to chime in on that?

I'd be interested to hear the rationale from the voter who has Wooster at #1 over UWSP.

Even as a Wooster partisan, I find it difficult to come up with a way to slot the Scots ahead of the Pointers. It seems to me like UWSP has the edge by going undefeated against an equally or even stronger schedule vs. Wooster's loss, and they've played one more game. I haven't watched the Pointers extensively, but even based on the ~2 halves I've seen, it also seems that UWSP's dual weapons of Tillema and Hass are a notch above Brown and Thorpe of Wooster.

Just curious to hear the reasoning if that voter is interested in explaining.

I had WPI 5th; Williams 8th.
In the non-posted trial run I had WPI 6th, Amherst 9th & Williams 4th.  Losing to Amherst isn't that terrible of a loss especially on the road, but remember what I said earlier in the week: "If at all possible I WILL take head-to-head results into play, if at all possible."  And 9th to 4th was definitely possible, especially when you include Amherst's win earlier in the week over a very good Eastern Connecticut team.  So WPI replaced Cabrini in my 5 slot, since they went to 3rd ahead of losses by IWU & Williams (3rd & 4th in the trial run), Whitewater went up 1 from 6th in the trial to 5th in the posted poll, moved Amherst from 9th to 7th, put Williams at 8th, and moved Wittenberg down 1 (8th to 9th) after they won 2 close home games by a combined 3 points.

I stayed up until the wee hours on Monday night/Tuesday morning so I could get my poll turned in before the new Top 25 poll was released. I managed to do that despite falling asleep twice while I was working on it.

Like you I had Williams at #10, Unlike you I had WPI a bit lower at #14. I'm still not sold on the Engineers. Any team that can lose to Castleton State by double digits, doesn't make me want to put them in the Top 10. I struggled to put them as high as 14th. For the last 3 years I believe, they have failed to win a 2nd round game in the NCAA tournament. I try to picture my Top Ten as teams that would make it through to the Sweet 16. They also have the weakest SOS of any team in the Top 25 at #307. Even Albertus Magnus at #304 is better.  In fact you have to go all the way to Massey's 76th ranked team to find a school with a worse SOS than the Engineers. That would be Husson in the North Atlantic Conference, the lowest ranked conference in D3.

Being that Husson is ranked higher than Middlebury in Massey...why should that be an issue? I didn't vote for Husson but they are undefeated.

I guess I'm one of the outliers on Williams. I'm unimpressed with their schedule, with their best wins being close wins against slightly above average teams like Springfield (H by 5) and Hampden-Sydney (A by 2). The only very good team they played was Amherst who led for 35 minutes in the game and were barely threatened in the second half in winning by 11. Everyone else they played were 150 or worse according to Massey.

Ryan Scott (Hoops Fan)

Middlebury has not been living up to their potential.  They're going to have to run the table to get back in my poll.

Husson's schedule is terrible and they're barely beating most of those teams.

Williams has been underwhelming from what I expected of them, but I expected them to be challenging for the #1 ranking.  That trip to Virginia was impressive, even if Hampden-Sydney is having a down year - d3 road trips are not easy.  The players aren't used to it (for the most part) and home court in strange places with unfamiliar refs is a big deal.

Except for the fact that only five of their games have margins under 10 points. So barely beating most of those teams = whopping at least half upside the head a good one.

Against that schedule, I'd need to see a minimum of 15 point wins without exception and an average margin of victory of like 30 or 35 to rank them.  It's just an abysmal schedule.

As the one who put them 25th, I'll admit that it's more of a ceremonial vote. I'd have them as underdogs against schools I didn't rank like Williams, WPI, St Thomas, etc. But the fact is, out of more than 400 teams, they're one of just 6 that have managed to beat everyone they've faced and that deserves a little bit of respect.
I do the same thing in the football poll when there's an unbeaten like St Scholastica so at least I'm consistent ;D
