I was glad to see that no one in our poll gave Maryville a single mention. I was surprised to see them at #25 in the real poll. I was considering them last week until I looked at their schedule and their 4 team league. They'd probably be a .500 team in most of the decent conferences.

I was very close at adding Maryville. In fact, Massey has them rated very highly. But they've done their business against a lot of mediocre NAIA schools that may or may not be better than a lot of D-3 schools, so I couldn't really give them credit.

While I am not one of Maryville's fans who whines all the time about the lack of respect MC gets from national posters, I think some of the explanations I am reading, esp. from magicman, border on the extreme.  Scheduling recognized DIII opponents from where Maryville is located is a challenge, and the game with Centre was cancelled because a MC coach was killed in a car crash, but I am pretty sure the crack that "They'd probably be a .500 team in most of the decent conferences" is ill-informed.

Most of us know that the only way to deal with this challenge is to beat people y'all think are any good and that pretty much means the whole deal depends on what happens in the NCAA tournament, where the Scots always play and have won more than they have lost for a long time now.

6-5 over 5 years, advancing no further than the second round the last 3 years,  1-2 vs teams outside the South Region, probably doesn't excite anyone.

ps 4-4 in the last 4 tournaments.

But to their credit, they've been to the tourney and have at least advanced to the second round a few times, which is a lot more than a lot of programs can say.

This is true, and my team was in the same position for many years, but scottiedoug's last statement made Maryville's tournament prowess seem much more than it actually is, just thought I'd set the record out there for people to see.

MC wild animal

Who cares about the polls or rankings....MC is playing with a chip on its shoulder and the last time I checked none of your votes, D3hoops.com's poll, or any other mathematical genius decides who makes it to Salem. I agree its time for Maryville to take it to the next level!

The only thing that made me subject us all to postings about how being in the tournament (and winning at least one game) for more consecutive years than anybody is meaningless was the crack about being a .500 team in, say, the ODAC.   Carson-Newman, a DII team MC beat, is 16-4, and King, another DII team MC beat has won way more than they have lost.

And since when is the SCAC so well thought of that Centre gets all the way to #5 (or #3).  Maryville has taken care of SCAC teams pretty well lately, in and outside the tournament, including Oglethorpe this year.

And to reiterate, we know that winning some games (plural) in the tournament is the best argument we can offer.

King is NAIA 2, though they are #13 according to Massey in NAIA-2.

Maryville also split with Carson - Newman. Carson - Newman is only 52nd in Massey for D2 with MOV included, mainly because of a weak SOS.

Centre is just at the right place at the right time in this year of uncertainty. The SCAC is not a world beater but it's a decent conference.

Some times it is better to be lucky then good...not saying thats the only reason.  But in every great season there is always luck involved in some sort of fashion.

Smedindy:  It is not a big deal, but Maryville has only played C-N once this year and won.   I am sure Centre is good...they often are, and I say good luck to them.  I would not be surprised if Maryville and Centre play each other in the tournament.  MC has beaten a SCAC team several times in the tournament recently.

My bad, I was looking cockeyed.

But I only noticed Maryville beating one SCAC foe, Trinity in the past few seasons in the NCAA.

1999 - Lost to Miss. College
2000 - Beat SCAD, beat Hampden-Sydney, lost to McMurry
2001 - Beat MacMurray, lost to Witt
2002 - Beat Webster, lost to Wash U.
2003 - Beat Miss. College, lost to Hanover
2004 - Lost to Ill. Wesleyan
2005 - Beat Methodist, lost to Miss. College
2006 - Beat Trinity (TX), lost to Miss. College
2007 - Beat Mary Hardin-Baylor, lost to Miss. College (AGAIN??)

Smedingly,

As has been stated on here before, Maryville is riding a NCAA record 9 straight years with at least one NCAA tournament victory (they had tournament wins in 1999 and 2004 prior to the losses you listed above).  Not that it is at all relavent, but the 1999 win was against SCAC champion Rose-Hulman, who has since changed conferences.

The Maryville that IWU beat was from Missouri (SLIAC).  Maryville (TN) got a bye, beat Randy Mac, then lost to [I've just blanked out the name!].

Not really anything more than interesting but 1999 was Rose-Hulman's first year in the SCAC.
