st. joes baseball team is really good.  they should win the gnac in their first full season.   Mt.ida has gone to 4 NCAA tourneys in women's volleyball.. their men's soccer team is also very good.  lasell's men's soccer team went to ncaa's last year. lasell has a solid wvb team as well.  They got 2nd the last 4 years.

mt. ida and lasell's other teams are middleof the pack teams at best. .compare them to maybe rivier(not including their volleyball teams) for the most part.

well...baseball is not going to be a GNAC sport until more schools offer it ...(fat chance)  ...there volleyball team is ok....heck ..who do they play that is any good....heck ...there biggest win is against...Wentworth, Newbury, or ....Lasell....I think they are not going to offer as much as people think....but I know these schools are not as ....solid academically ....so...basically ...its bad news for GNAC......

emmanuelfan

Yes Southern Vermont did get thrown out of their league thanks to their Athletic Director. As you can see other than men's basketball their programs are terrible. Doesn't matter who coaches up there...they will always be terrible because they do not have great administration or support. The women are still 0 and whatever!!!!!  Atleast they won a couple of games a few years ago. If they were in the conference then mens basketball would be competing this year. They already beat Norwich and Johnson and Wales..........

The problem is low enrollment at SVC. .they have under 400 full time students.. no budget to support full time students.

dont knock newbury's wvb team they would have been the 4-5th seed in the GNAC this year.  but over all the best team coming into the gnac of the 3 schools being added is st. joe's baseball team.  They went to NCAA's last year.  rest of the sports for the other 3 schools are average at best.

The academic standards of mt. ida and lasell are just as good as emmanuel, JWU, dweb, riv, albertus, pine manor

Baseball is a GNAC sport.  Most teams offer it and they do have an NCAA bid.  St. Joe's basebal will add a lot to the conference.  The other schools will be middle of the pack teams in men's and women's basketball.  Over all the conference did not hurt itself by taking these teams.

thanks for correcting me on baseball...as for newbury...being 4th or 5th....I guess you have never seen them play before in person....I would place them ..at least 6th...heck...they got a cushy schedule while playing those very weak Maine teams  in the Independant Championship...way to pump up those wins....as for academic standards....I guess US News is wrong in saying "less selective" which means .....as long as you have money we will take you in....as for the WBB...its going to be another exciting year....

Well in WVB Newbury did beat emerson who was 5th.  Why is the Emmanuel College WVB coach blasting other colleges onthis board.?? Not to professional if you ask me.

but doesn't matter this is a basketball board.

but i do agree that st. joe's baseball team is huge for the GNAC.

it should be an exciting match between norwich and emmanuel though!  WNEC should be tough as well. but we shall see when tourney time comes!  The key will be who gets the home game i think.  it be a long ride to norwich for emmanuel if that is what happens.

heythere

st. joes baseball team will be a nice upgrade for the gnac, there always good and have a deep squad every year, and a nice field.

Let me see if i got this right raining 3's is the emmanuel wvb coach so that means d3ballinboston is the newbury wvb, now i am the coach of my sons 4th grade aau bball team who has the better job???

d3bballinboston

actually i coach junior high bball.. but doesn't matter i was just wondering why a WVB coach would come on here and bash another college for no apparent reason.

How in the world is Norwich not ranked in the polls? Geez, they are only 10-0.......

There are 425 teams in Division III women's basketball. Norwich hasn't played a good enough schedule to merit a Top 25 slot.

We'll find out today how good they are.

dballin (i.e. caitlyn bailey #14, norwich women's basketball) your team is good and in my opinion is one of the better teams in NE (top 6 somewhere). that being said, bowdoin would beat you 99 times out of 100. if you two were to play again on ANY court, the outcome would be the same. bowdoin has had a lot of close games over the years and find a way to win pretty much all of them (except 12 over the past 5 years). the norwich game was no different - bowdoin is at the top every year and walk into every game with a HUGE target on their back with every opponent being up to play one of the best. think of last night and how pumped/excited/giddy/etc. you and your team was to face the #1 ranked team in the nation and to get a chance to knock them off. imagine having to play those opponents EVERY time you stepped on the floor and your team might have more than one loss and perhaps, a few closer games too.
lastly, while you "don't like to blame refs" as you said in the nescac forum, do you think that your opinion is somehow "tainted" given you played in the game and ended up on the losing end? did you read the boxscore to see that the fouls were 16-16? this includes the end of the game when your team was forced to foul, thus bowdoin was actually called for more fouls than norwich. i'm a williams college fan, so i'm unbias but i think you should spend less time advocating your own team on a forum and more time with your team in the gym buliding your "defensive powerhouse". hahahhaa, i liked that one.

d3ballin,
why are you erasing all of your insightful posts? they were entertaining. please don't go. i suppose if we see a post from someone in shock that caitlyn bailey wasn't named to the preseason all american team we can assume you haven't left us.

Pat Coleman

This is why you should quote posts. :)

Well, the GNAC conference season on the women's side has finally started, with Norwich already having played 2 league games, and Emmanuel starting league play tonight at Emerson's new Piano Row Gymnasium in Boston.

(Finally, the Lions have their own gym on campus-- no more YMCAs, random gyms in Boston, or going to Pine Manor to watch Emerson hoops.   It will be brutally cold tonight, but I will probably go into town tonight to watch the game.)

Once again, it looks like Emmanuel and Norwich for the GNAC crown, with Norwich being the defending champion and Emmanuel the challenger, for a change.  If history is any indication, Norwich does not usually stay GNAC champion for too long-- I pick Emmanuel to take back the crown this season-- even if only because the Saints played Bowdoin better on a comparative basis than Norwich did.  However, that pick is not final-- Norwich also plays at Emerson on Saturday, so I will check out the Cadets then and see if I can refine that early opinion.

The February 3 game between Emmanuel and Norwich up in Vermont will go a long way in deciding who will take the GNAC title.  If neither team disappoints along the way, the winner of that game will get to play the GNAC semifinals and championship game on their respective campus.

On the most recent D3Hoops.com Top 25 poll, Norwich receives 50 votes and Emmanuel receives 42 votes.  On the most recent ESPN/USA Today/WBCA DIII coaches poll, Emmanuel is ranked at #25 with 19 votes, and Norwich receives 2 votes.

Let's have a terrific conference season everybody.
