Deiscanton,

I have been informed that the NCAA has corrected the issue.

Let me know if that's the case.

Cheers!

I will know next Monday when the next official NCAA DIII NPI summary report is released for games through Sunday, February 16, 2025. The D3Datacast computer will do their run on Monday morning using the scores reported on the Massey system, and the official report will do the numbers using the scores reported on the NCAA statistics system.  We will then compare the numbers and see if they match.  If so, then the problem has been corrected.   Official NPI DIII summary reports are not being released daily this week-- those official daily reports start next week, since I believe that there at least one conference in DIII men's basketball is using the NPI ranking to break ties for seeding in their conference tournament.   Right now, the NPI numbers have changed dynamically.

The corrections, if done, will not show up until the next official NPI summary report is released next Monday.  Right now, if you click on the NPI ranking number for each team, the errors on the schedule for UC Santa Cruz will still be noticed, since that was the schedule that was used to create the NPI report for this week.  The same would be the case for the November game between New England College and Dean, since that was the coding used to create the NPI report for this week as well.

Thanks to Matt and Zac Snyder for having the D3Datacast computer do the unofficial daily runs of the NPI for basketball for this season-- these runs have been considered by me as having the same authoritative weight as the daily NPI runs for NCAA D3 ice hockey for men and women that also have been conducted by the United States College Hockey Organization this season. As a matter of fact, the NPI system was created by the same person who also created the original Pairwise system that NCAA Division 1 men's hockey still uses to select the at-large teams for the NCAA DI Men's Ice Hockey Tournament.

Does anyone know if the Warren Wilson men's basketball team opted out of their invite to the Coast to Coast Men's Basketball Tournament?   I know that Coast to Coast Conference policy allows its members to opt out of conference tournaments, but the member has to do so no later than 3 weeks prior to the start of the conference tournament, which in the case of men's basketball was Thursday, Feb. 6, 2025.

I noticed that Warren Wilson opted not to play any other Coast 2 Coast members on its men's basketball schedule this year-- which C2C policy allows the member to do.-- Officially, there are no conference games in the C2C, and each team is responsible for creating its own schedule.   That policy is a carryover from a rule that members of the American Collegiate Athletic Association used when the ACAA existed as a separate conference/league prior to its merger with the Capital Athletic Conference to form the Coast to Coast Conference.

Warren Wilson is winless vs D3 opponents this season in men's basketball, with its only 2 wins being vs Appalachian Bible.

Since the NCAA Power Index (NPI) is being used to seed teams for the C2C men's basketball tournament, unless Warren Wilson already opted out, the Owls as the #5 seed would be scheduled to play #4 seed UC Santa Cruz at Salisbury, MD, on Thursday, Feb. 27, with the winner playing #1 seed Christopher Newport the following day assuming that the placement of the teams on the NPI national table remains the same through games of Sunday, Feb. 23.  The #3 seed right now is Mary Washington, and the #2 seed right now is the pre-determined host school for this year's C2C men's basketball tournament, Salisbury.

C2C men's basketball semifinals are on Friday, Feb. 28, with the championship game on Saturday, March 1.

I think it was.   Then again, the previous message might have been meant just for me to read, and he couldn't not find a way to PM me.  I will read the ODAC board for any comments on H-SC at Roanoke.   Let's stick primarily with C2C matters on this page.

I don't know if they opted out or if the tournament is limited to the top four teams in NPI, but either way, they are not participating and the pairings are posted with four teams.

I don't know if they opted out or if the tournament is limited to the top four teams in NPI, but either way, they are not participating and the pairings are posted with four teams.

The tournament is not limited.  According to the Coast to Coast handbook, all C2C teams participating in men's basketball automatically qualify for the tournament by virtue of being a member, but a particular C2C member can opt-out of the conference tournament by giving advance notice.  The notice must be given no later than 3 weeks prior to the start of the conference tournament.   Warren Wilson apparently met that deadline-- the Owls probably declared much earlier than 3 weeks prior.  In soccer, not only did the Owls not participate in the C2C men's and women's soccer tournament according to their schedules, but they also cancelled their soccer seasons in mid-September 2024, just a few games into each season.   Of course, Warren Wilson had a very good reason to cancel the remainder of the fall season in all of their sports-- the campus was devastated by major flooding from Hurricane Helene, and the aftereffects from the hurricane almost cancelled the entire winter season for Warren Wilson sports as well.

In the case of men's basketball, there are 5 C2C teams playing men's basketball this season, so they automatically all had spots in the C2C men's basketball tournament.   Warren Wilson did not include the C2C tournament in their published schedule for basketball, so it is safe to say that the Owls opted-out and chose not to participate in the conference tournament.

It is my belief that this is also in keeping with the former American Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) policy that members of the ACAA used for their conference tournaments when that league existed.  In that league, all of its members automatically qualified for the conference basketball tournament, but a particular member can opt-out no later than 3 weeks prior to the start of the tournament.

For more detail, the policy can be found at http://c2csports.com/information/handbook/Section_V_-_Championship_Sports_2024-25.pdf

Update-- I have found the C2C Men's Basketball Tournament schedule that confirms the Warren Wilson opt-out, and that only 4 of the 5 C2C men's basketball members will be competing in this year's conference tournament.   It is posted at:

http://c2csports.com/tournaments/mbb/2024-25/index

Semifinals will be on Friday, Feb. 28, and the championship game will be on Saturday, March 1 at Salisbury.

Had there been a Thursday game this year, by NPI seeding, it would most likely have been Warren Wilson vs UC Santa Cruz with the winner advancing to play Christopher Newport.   Warren Wilson's opt-out automatically sends UC Santa Cruz to the semifinals where the Banana Slugs will most likely play Christopher Newport on Friday, Feb. 28, with the host school Salisbury playing Mary Washington in the other semifinal.   The seedings will be determined by the NPI rankings of the teams through the conclusion of games on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2025.

Two milestones reached tonight.

Coach K records his 400 Victory as a head coach. 18 years total.

Jahn Hines becomes second all-time on the CNU scoring list.  He is now 14 points shy of 2,000.

I was just looking at all-time scoring records. Lamont Strothers for CNU finished his career with 2709 points. What I found, shows him at 4th all-time. It might be old data. The all-time #1 scorer is shown as Andre Foreman from Salisbury with 2940 points. Strothers and Foreman played at the same time.  CNU and SU played each other during that time. I believe CNU won all games vs SU when Strothers played. I would love to have seen a game with those two. I wonder if I can find a box score somewhere.

Also, from what I was able to find, it looks like Strothers scored in double figures every single game of his career.
I do know he was drafted in the 2nd round of the NBA draft.

Congrats to Coach and Jahn!

Congrats to Jahn Hines. He just became the second player in CNU men's basketball history to reach the 2,000 career points level!

HoopsDad34

Congrats to Jahn Hines. I've seen him in two CNU/UMW games this year and he's a beast. Had 32 points against UMW last game and basically single-handily beat them. The C2C Championship tonight is a rematch of last year's game, CNU v. UMW as UMW won their semi-final game versus Salisbury 60-50. Stud Jordan Oates was held scoreless for the first time all year. Tonight's win goes to the NCAAs but CNU will go even with a loss.

HoopsDad34

Bid thievery by UMW in the C2C finals! Big win over CNU for first time in 14 games. UMW was up virtually the entire game and after CNU clawed back from 12 points down, UMW hung on to win. CNU shot horribly from 3P, 2/20, but Hines had his usual strong game. 25p, 8r. This will knock them back in seeding a bit but bigger concern may be poor shooting last few games. We'll see how far the young Eagle can go.

Congrats to UMW. Some may look at their record and say this was a fluke. I do not think it was a fluke at all.  Look at their schedule. They played close games against top competition. And they did it with 12 of their 14 roster spots being sophomores and freshmen.

This team is strong and the next few years will be huge for UMW. This very well could be the season that turns that program around and it builds into something special.
