Looking at the CNU roster.

All 9 Freshmen from last year have returned! That's crazy! Landed a fantastic So. transfer. Incoming Freshmen have size. Let's see if they can adjust to the college game the same as the 9 from last year.

Looking at the box score from the Elite 8 team from last year (who were within 1 possession of a final 4 appearance), and we lost only 2 points. 46 of the 48 points scored were from guys who are returning.

This should be an exciting season!

Had an injury and decided it didn't make sense to come back. 7 freshman and 5 sophomores on roster.

Let's the conference retain their AQ bid I assume?

It brings the conference to 6 men's hoops teams, which is the minimum requirement for the AQ. What I'm not clear about is the timing from the last time we had the minimum until when Regent counts as the 6th. Maybe someone from D3Hoops can better explain.

What a game last night vs HSC. Even though CNU lost 74-71, it was a fun game to watch in a great environment. A lot of sophomores gained valuable experience in that heavyweight battle.

I believe Regent can count towards the 6 in their final year of reclassification (2027-28) but no earlier.

There's a chance they can get skipped ahead, too, possibly.  They're a little less rigid with the transition, so long as all the bench marks are being met.

So a few weeks in, any thoughts on how the C2C teams are looking? CNU seems as strong as expected with a tough loss to H-S and a good win versus a good VWU team. Other wins against weak teams though. UMW has some tough losses to R-M, Marietta and VWU. Is Salisbury surprisingly good? Nice win over JHU but not close losses to RMC and Eastern. UCSC is 4-2 with a 2OT loss to a strong Chapman team. Warren Wilson? Going to have a tough year...given up over 100 points four times and off to an 0-7 start.

Greek Tragedy

The announcers calling last night's CNU game against Stevens Point were wondering about Jahn Hines' availability at the end of the game. It seemed they were switching Hines for offense/defense reasons, but I don't even know if he was in the game at the end. Was he hurt? Tired? Strategy? They also commented that Tyson Henderson probably wasn't the best 3 pt option at the end.

Thoughts from CNU85 or other CNU faithful?

I watched some of the game - it looked like CNU snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.  Stevens Point shot the ball well from the field, but their free throw shooting and rebounding were, let's say, less good. CNU missed 7 free throws in the second half, also. With the exception of the Hines brothers, CNU is a young squad.  I suppose they need to learn to close out a game.  One would think that CNU would put the ball in the hands of their All American for the last possession.

So HoopsDad, UMW has roughed up some teams after that strange road loss at NC Wesleyan.  They've got some great games ahead of them - getting excited in Fredericksburg?

HoopsDad34

Yes Tigerfan, was at last night's game and after a slow start they crushed Averett, who beat CNU or course. We'll see how they look in two weeks against DeSales and Gettysburg but they seem to be coming together. Not surprisingly freshman Kye Robinson is the real deal: averaging 10p and 5r on 41%/39%/82% shooting.

HoopsDad34

And to be fair Averett's best player, Jamison Graves, was hurt and DNP.

I had the game on my ipad, but I had the volume silenced. I was in the ER with my 90 yr old mother. She's going to be ok. Just medication problems.

I couldn't really tell about the flow of the game. It seemed like we were in control most of the game and just lost that control to a good team. It happens. I did some analysis on the game earlier today and then threw it away. We have 10 sophomores and they play a lot of minutes and score a lot of the points.

UWSP also has a ton of underclassmen who played a lot of minutes and score a lot of points. That was the basis of my analysis was to see if UWSP had more seniors playing significant minutes and contributing points. My analysis showed that to be only a slightly valid point. UWSP is very young as well.

I did some analysis on the HSC game. That game CNU was 9-20 from the FT line. Had we shot what HSC did (68%), we win that game. HSC must really practice a lot on their FT defense!  :o  ;D

I then researched some more. And as always, I do a ton of analysis and then throw it away. I looked at the history of CNU FT% going back decades. I think only about 4-5 seasons has CNU shot more than 70% from the FT line. One of those years was a losing season with a record (If I remember correctly) of 10-16. One of the worst seasons in terms of FT %, we went deep into the tournament.

So, while some coaches look at key stats like rebounds to determine how well they are playing, I now look at FT %. If CNU stinks that year from the line, then we will contend for a Natty.  ;D  ;D

Greek Tragedy

Point has 2 seniors. This is Abdul-Wahid's 2nd year with the team. Bolden was here 4 years ago, left the team and then came back last year. So neither has been with the program 4 or 5 years. The other starters are sophomores. Our very short bench consists of another sophomore and a freshman.

CNU is young, but a veteran team because they've played NCAA tournament games and obviously the Hines bros. Our tournament experience consists of a WIAC tourney win and a WIAC tourney loss. Definitely wet behind the ears.

Tons of credit to Point because they could've easily packed it in when they were down 15 in the 1st half. 10-20 from the line is concerning, of course and our lack of depth nearly cost us with one fouling out and 2 more on 4 fouls. In our view, a great win over a perennial title contender.
