The CCNY coach... hahahahah.

He left his job at Polytech only to lead his CCNY team with a pre-season all american on it to an AWFUL LAST PLACE FINISH playing in the worst collegiate baseball conference in the WORLD.  This aside, CCNY played games on a field on the east river of manhattan with a 240 foot center field fence so any home runs hit there should not count towards their stats (Gomez has 8 HR's...at least half of which were hit over a 240 foot fence).

Polytech, BTW, just made the playoffs in the Skyline in their first year and will have a chance to advance playing MSV while CCNY is DONE, not coming CLOSE to qualifying for the weakest and worst inner conference collegiate baseball tournament ever. (usually CSI & John Jay are good...not so anymore).

At least Coach Yorke had something right : the teams are AWFUL but this group of terrible has his team at #2 on the list (behind Yeshiva).

"This aside, CCNY played games on a field on the east river of manhattan with a 240 foot center field fence so any home runs hit there should not count towards their stats (Gomez has 8 HR's...at least half of which were hit over a 240 foot fence)."

Not entirely true. They only played 3 games there (which was 3 too many), 1 against Maritime, 2 against PolyTech. He hit 3 HR's out of his 8 there. I 1000% agree that any stats compiled on that field should not count, but you have to have your facts correct. IT is entirely the AD's fault that they played there, she singlehandedly ruined the entire athletic program, one year after she was hired.

The funny thing about Yorke is that he recruited the kids at PolyTech, then left for CCNY assuming he was going to inherit a monster squad. the kids he recruited were solely responsible for handing CCNY 2 losses on that mini field, sticking it up his a$$. There is no reson the CCNY team was as bad as they were, tehy did lose several key players, but there is no way tehy should have been as terrrible as tehy were (3-31, tehy are trying to avoid putting a loss to St. Joe's of Brooklyn on their record). That is entirely coaching, and Yorke & Eric Webber should be embarrassed.

Funny stats: Pitching = 208 innings, 187 walks, and 49 HBP's. 28 games 85 errors. Doing the math....that is almost TWO RUNNERS per inning on base for free. EVERY inning, for the entire season. Hitting = 28 games, 67 walks, 211 K's. That is just flat out poor coaching. And hitting. lol. Take away Gomez's stats, and the team batted .243.

They really are worse than Yeshiva, lol.

With the skyline playoffs starting today, who will advance? Who will be out?

3. MSV vs. 6. Polytech
4. OW vs. 5. MSM

My predictions- The 3. MSV and the 4. OW will move on to play Farmingdale and St Joes.

MMTPdthree

#3 MSV  vs #2 SJC
#5 MSMC   vs #1 FSU

Old Westbury is out.
Polytechnic is out.

Predictions?

i'm glad we agree about CCNY>  GARBAGE.  And yeah.  The fact that Old West lost is awful. Why didn't Whitenack start?  Awful.

St. Joe's winning it all.

Ralph Turner

Mt St Vincent vs SUNY-Farmingdale Sunday for the title

MMTPdthree

Congrats to Farmingdale State Rams.
Good luck in the Regionals.

FYI.  I predicted MSv vs. FSU in the finals

Gomez can flat out hit...  So any comments about him getting cheap hits is moot in my opinion.  He doesn't make to many soft outs!!!  Team wasn't very good this year... but the kid can hit.  AND he is a nice guy on top of it...

Billy 40

Bob, NYBB's arguement is valid, for those few games they played on the East River. It's a DISGRACE that they were scheduled there by the AD.

That doesn't taint what Richie did this year, or last. The hitters behind him had more strikeouts than hits, and most teams knew Gomez was the only hiter on the team, and didn't give him as many good pitches to hit, the way he got last year with Mena hitting behind him. Regardless, he improved his batting average, as well as OBA and slugging percentage. He definitely earned the Pre-Season All America votes, and he still deserves to make the AA team, but on a 3-32 team it's just not going to happen.

NYBB

the last time i checked, being a nice guy didn't get onto the all america team.  he's not going to make it.

someone that should make it however, is my friend Pete Mac out of U of R.  Ridiculous, real, stats.

That's true, it were Richie's stats & talent which got him on the Pre-Season All America team, and despite how horrendous his team was, he improved his stats from last season, and will hopefully still be considered for the AA team based on his performance, and nothing else.

NYBB,

check the post.. no one said he will  make the team becuase he is a nice kid.  That was an added comment... It is true that it is hard to get any recognition when your team is 3-whatever... BUT, its hard to ignore his ability with the bat.

I have no idea if he is going to be on the AA ballot, let alone make the team.  But I would put his ability with the bat up against anyone who is considered.

As far as Pete making the AA team... his stats are good, but he is one of 8-10 pitchers in the NY region that will be considered.  Then you have to compete with all the guys from the other regions... lets keep it in perspective and not make it too big becuase as you say, he is your friend.  Yes, he had a very good season and is in the mix, but it hasn't seperated him from the pitchers in NY, let alone all the regions.

AND, he too is a nice kid.

pudge27

I agree with you Bob.  PM has some good stats, but not necessarily better than other pitchers in the region.  The kid from RPI has the same ERA with another win, Tone from CST is 7-0 with a 9 inning no-no, Sottung is 8-1 with a 1.57 era and I think he has the school record for wins at IC.  I know that AA teams are for 08', but that's pretty impressive at a school like Ithaca.

I don't mean to diminish anyone's season.  7-1 with a 1.52 is a great year no matter how you cut it.  But, there's a lot of phenominal ballplayers with awesome seasons that don't get AA.  All of those guys mentioned above have had great seasons, whether they get the AA nod or not.  I will say NYBB, that at the beginning of the season, I thought your were full of it, but I've got to give you some credit for picking a good horse way before the season started.  Too bad that UR didn't make the tourney.  It would have been nice to get another Upstate NY team in.

U of R made their own bed when they didn't get to the LL championship game. If they had made the LL championship game they would have definately made the field of 54! You gotta win when it counts!
In sports it's not how you start, its how you finish!

FYI in order to be considered to be an All-American you must first make the regions First Team Regional All-American Squad.

After that, to be perfectly honest, players on teams in the NCAA Tournament always get first precedent over players that are not in the tournament.  Finally, players on teams in the World Series will get precedent over everyone else.  Although this is not a written rule, this is how things end up breaking down with players with similar stats.  Just take a look at the past teams. The fact that they announce the teams at the dinner before the World Series begins probably has a lot to do with this.  Finally, Sottung, Zongol, and Tone all play for teams that are generally perrenial NCAA teams (except for RPI lately but still).  Just like many conference awards these are often very political which means usually those squads get the benefit of the doubt as well when it comes to post season accolades.
