So is Frostburg looking for a game for the 29th?  I though the CNU game was postponed? Salisbury and Kean are still on for the original scheduled time. I am indifferent about this game, I know my Gulls have the scheme, but Kean has always been tough outing for Salisbury, we never really can say "this is going to be an easy W".  Hopefully we don't have the numerous turnovers  like in the 1st quarter, we have start fast and then finish.

Since Frostburg and CNU have diff bye weeks, there's no way this game is "postponed". It's canceled. It would take a major rework of both schedules and all those teams on their schedules. Since the playoffs are the week after the regular season, it's just not going to happen. I don't know why they used the word postponed.

And actually, as it has turned out down here, Newport News is fine. The campus could have remained open. But better to be cautious. And right now CNU is home to one of 2 state run shelters and base for rescue/recovery ops. The campus is swamped with generator trucks, National Guard and State Police.

Both CNU and FSU has tried to work with opponents within the NJAC and (FSU) trying to find a game to take the place of this game. It's not going to happen. FSU has to win the conference to make the playoffs. Looks like the playoffs starts in week 3 for the bobcats.

Or week 4 when they play again

I'm counting that as week 3 since this week is essentially a second bye.

The rest of us out here count it as Week 4 so you'll probably be thrown off.

Frostburg doesn't have to win the conference to make the playoffs, but it always helps to go in automatically.

I wonder if anyone can lend some thoughts on this topic....Frostburg is moving to DII. Their endowment is low. How will they pay for those scholarships? I looked at the DII limits for the sports FSU participates and the average cost to attend.....I come up with $3 million per year would be needed to fully fund all the allowed scholarships. Do they phase it in? I would imagine it has to be equal to Women sports. Football can have 36. I just wonder how that would work and how will it translate to competition if the answer is to start slow with scholarships and other established schools are fully funded in athletics. I am totally clueless as to how all of that would work. Anyone with knowledge or thoughts????

They obviously know something we don't.

It definitely does phase in -- you don't just drop 36 scholarships into the first football class. But I have no idea how they intend to fund it.

So true. I and would imagine they can't just focus on one sport. They would have to at least be equal in total scholarship numbers between women and men sports. The total limit for the sports they sponsor is 178. And phasing it in seems like the obvious choice with a $22 million endowment. Hence, my question about on the field/court performance. If for the next several years many athletes are still non-scholarship.......ouch!

Well, I am sure there was a cost/ profit analysis that was done that showed that they could attract x amount of additional students and perhaps sponsors by moving up into DII vs. the cost of scholarships.   It doesn't hurt that they are a part of the Maryland state university system, so they may be getting funding from the state of Maryland which seems to be the most logical reason they can pull this off.  This certainly would be impossible for a small private college like Wesley....

True. They will get some funding from the state. However, many do not realize the rapid decline in funding from the government in state supported schools. I just looked and in 2016 FSU received $38 million from the state for a budget of $110 million. That's actually high compared to many schools. I imagine the % is much lower in 2018.

In Virginia, each school receives different degrees of funding from the state. Last I heard a few years ago UVA received approximately 5% of their operating budget from the state. They might as well go private!  20 years ago CNU received 76% of their operating budget from the state. Today that figure is closer to 20%.

A friend of mine was a Dean at USC-Aiken and he said the exact same thing happened in SC. Aiken went from the 75/25 state/private funding ratio and it flipped. Now they get less than 25% from the state.

This is the reason when you read in the news about ridiculous tuition increases.....

Anyway - no matter how FSU is tackling it, it seems complicated and possibly an initial burden they hope to overcome.

Tell me if I am thinking about this completely wrong.  I just saw that in state tuition is around 21K and out of state 34K.  I imagine that if Frostburg is like the D3 schools of which I am familiar, then a typical football player does not pay this amount, they get some sort of "grant" package.  If they eliminate the grant program, can't they offer 36 scholarships and then have the other 70 players on the team pay full tuition?  Would that be a zero sum game?

Wesley laying the hammer down tonight. Really firing on all cylinders. Best part is: no penalties.

Ouch. Thanks for the heads up. I think the 3rd stringers are in now with several minutes left in the 4thQ

Really impressed with Wesley's talent pool this year.  Yeah TCNJ isn't a good litmus test, but Del Val was.  Their recruiting landed some really good players on both sides of the ball.  I was surprised with the Freshman running back Xavier Drummond who ran for 116 yards on TWO runs in the 4th quarter!  He fumbled and lost the first one but came back and broke a 80+ yard run on the next series.  He has size and really good acceleration.  Keep an eye on him.  I was thrilled with the lack of penalties, but we will see if they can continue that against a quality opponent.  This team is pretty damned focused right now.
