Dave, sorry to hear the bad news.  I hope MSU gets the NJAC another win.  Cortland couldn't get the job done @ Hobart.  Good games up in NY today!!

Just wanted to pop in and say Cortland, you had a great squad.  Game could have gone either way today.

Congrats on a great year.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

A #2 seed vs. a #3 seed should never be considered as a 14-point spread, home or away...I think you know better than suggesting an oddsmaker line would be even close to 14, regardless of Union's current roll.

By rule the play should have resulted in a touchback, as only the player who fumbles forward into the endzone can legally recover the ball. But the referees awarded Hobart with a touchdown.

I believe that is only true on fourth down, Dan. I believe this rule covers it, although I am not a rules expert.

Pat,

I believe this happened in one of the main TV 1-A game either this weekend or last and I believe you are correct about the 4th down situation. In this case the QB fumbled and he was the only one who could advance the fumble even though it was recovered by his team in the endzone.

Pat Coleman

Thanks -- like I said, I'm not 100% sure, even when I'm reading the rulebook.

Pat-- I was probably watching the same games.  One game (lsu/bama) had the ball carrier fumble in a pile at the two yard line and a teammate got the fumble and scored.  The officials ruled that they could not advance the fumble, however, they retained possesion at the spot of the fumble.

Pat & Dan,

The ref turned his mic on and said the fumble was in the endzone. I can check the audio, as we have it archived and had the ref mic as part of our broadcast. We were wondering about that, too, in the Press Box, until the Ref indicated the fumble in the endzone. At one point, I thought Cortland had their hands on the ball, but Hobart ended up with it.

Pat - you're correct.  We had an incident in the Union/Ithaca game in which a running back fumbled forward on 3rd down with less than 2 minutes left, and a Dutchman teammate landed on it past the first down marker.  I questioned it initially, but then I realized it's only a fourth down rule (the "Holy Roller" rule in the NFL).

Now that our season is over I have way too much time on my hands.  The front page of my website has been completely overhauled.  Let me know what you think!   ;)
