PBR...

the scary thing is wall st. estimates that nj school teacher pension funds are up to $30 billion underfunded....people think nj has high taxes now just wait until they go to the tax payer to make up that shortfall...only other option is to declare it bankrupt and fold it into the fed's buy out company of underfunded pensions and then the retiree's usually get about 1/2 or less of what they were promised and their prescriptions co pay etc go thru the roof...ouch

The interesting thing was Corizine treating NJ like a business and shutting down NJ until they played ball.  I don't necessarily agree with him politically, but at least he ran a real business once.

It will also be interesting to see what Corey Booker can do in Newark.  I saw the video of his first run back in 2001-02 on PBS.  What a pile of dung Sharp James and his machine were.

Very reminicent of the Daley machine in Chicago.  Used strong arm and illegal tactics to win in 2002.  Still Booker narrowly lost.  I think James didn't run again because he knew he couldn't win.

I respect Corzine for that as well. However, in for a penny – in for a pound ... if he failed to get his way it was akin to getting "kneecapped" politically. Can you say "Jim Florio'd"? As it is, while the compromise reached ultimately gives half the monies raised from the additional state tax to property tax reform, it still will leave several hundred million dollars which need accounting for. In other words the state will pass that along all the way to the municiple level – which leads us right back to an increase in real estate taxes and costs for local services.

If a former art major can make this deduction, I'm sure the Trenton political types must be sharing some guffaws over their martinis at Lorenzo's!

They expected the big NJ growth to last forever and spent like it even after the bubble burst.  You can be certain that JT will not be retiring in NJ.  He may not even raise a family here.

No breaking news to most here, but footballscoop.com reports that Garett was/will be named HC at Kean today...

bill,

It's official, Garett is the new coach. Just checked the Kean web site.

It really blows, what happened to Coach C. He was either set up by the administration,  AD or Garett is a real snake. I do not know what the truth is, but it blows.

I realize that MSU is not hollier then thou. We had some footbal headaches in the early 2000's but Coach G. got us back on the right track. We paid the price for it. Kean even had a WR we released playing last year. I even think our Basketball program is on the right track, time will tell.

I hope we can put a Monkey Stomp on Kean this year. It's just sad what they did to Coach C. It ain't right.

Garrett won't have an easy time of it this year.  Too much turmoil within the Kean camp.

The firing of Coach C. can't have helped their recruiting effort.  I wonder just how much it hurt their recruiting.  Its hard for a kid to commit and/or stay committed to a school after the HC who was instrumental in recruiting you gets blown up.  Too much uncertainty.

Looks like Kean figured out a way to take another step backwards. :-\

Interesting proceedings regarding the NJAC schools and the state budget. Much to Phil's chagrin  ;)  I'm sure most of you noticed that CNJ dropped golf and cheerleading.....
What other schools will drop sports, and which ones?
What about staffing? I've even heard some schools in the conference will be going to all part-time coaches, including head coaches !

Any news from inside the NJAC?

Bill,
Much to my chagrin indeed! I'll need time to ruminate on the preceedings ... which I'll have some time to do since I'll be in Scotland the next couple weeks. Muirfield on Monday...

TCNJ never really was competitive in golf. It was the only (I think) sport with a part time coach. The Lions will lose a number of assistant coaches. I'm just thankful they didn't have to be as drastic as Rutgers. I would imagine the NJAC athletic cuts have only just begun. Funny how we haven't heard "boo" from Upper Montclair since they were crying poor even before the cuts (goodby wrestling).

And finally ... Kean really knows how to craft a press release:
Widely acknowledged as one of the top young defensive minds in Division III football, Dan Garrett was named the head coach of the Kean University football program this week following three years as the Cougars' defensive coordinator...

Ummm, that's nice and all that – and he might very well be an excellent defensive coach, but that's blowing your horn a little bit when you've been giving up about 27 ppg since he was defensive coordinator. Tho' I guess you could attribute that to their anemic offense to a certain extent.

BTW... I don't have any direct input in the d3football.com All-Americans, just to answer that anonymous email with a Montclair St. IP address.

Congrats to Adam Haas (1st) and Stef Sair (2nd; also national champ in wrestling) D3football.com Preseason All-Americans....

I wonder how many other 2-sport all americans there are out there in D-III ???

Of the 50- All-Americans ASC8, WIAC(5), NJAC(4), NWC,OAC,OSAC,MAC, MIAA(3) and USAC, ACFC,NCAC(2). In total the South(17), East(14), North(11) and West8. Congrats to the nominees, but let's see what falls out during the corse of the season. Teams with 2 selections appear to have an advantage(from a bias look Cortland, Rowan and Wesley). They are teams that should be in the play-offs, but Rowan and Cortland should watch out for #3, The Mighty Red Hawks could bite you guys in the Butt.

I'm sure that Mr. Benzel will be able to replace Mike Orihel, Sr., Rowan as the second team All America QB by season end to establish the left coast dominance at that position.   ;D

If any current Prof player reads this board, or if Orihel does, and I hope that they don't.  I hope that they finally prove the nay-sayers wrong this year.  I'm sure that some of the Prof faithful will have plenty to say about this.

Good Luck PROFS!!!
