At Merrill Field, the press box has a couple of small rooms for coaches. The press box was always "open air" i.e. no windows. Last year, windows were installed in the coaches' boxes partly to insulate the fans' ears from the cussing going on in there.

Is this a common problem? Do we have D3 assistant coaches who cannot evenly temper themselves during a game?

Now I know your telling fables because none of the coaches at MSU curse ever!!!!

Unfortunately the "F" word sometimes slips weather it is in the heat of the moment or just a reflex when a very frustrating intense situation arises i.e.: "the phantom two timeout situation" may he who is without sin cast the first stone"...

How many times would you like a coach to politely say "excuse Mr. Official there is one minute left in the game, and well I am a little confused because I swear about a minute ago I thought I saw 2 timeouts remaining for Wesley but now it says zero, could ya double check because were about to upset a powerhouse thanks. Do you think you could give me an update as to the status of the timeouts?" Please do not use the fact that MSU won as the premises of your argument, us winning has nothing to do with what potentially could have happened because of the referees inability to do their job.

Once MSU gained possession of the ball, and scoreboard read 0 for the amount of timeouts Wesley had on the clock, it should have never gotten to the "alleged curse words" that you say you heard!! Because the refs should have rectified he situation by stopping the clock and explaining the situation to both coaches....  Oh by the way, Kudos to have had the privilege of working the game clock for Wesley a few years back,  ;D

Does it really matter if coaches swear?

Its an extremely emotional game, and those in attendance already know that....

PA_wesleyfan

The CURSE word was used at will from the first quarter;

And I kept only the score had nothing to do with either time or play clock! And it was an honor to be asked to do so.
Football !!! The ultimate team sport. Anyone who plays DIII football is a winner...

I think it does when it is not from the sidelines...and when it is used as much as this coached used it.

Alleged curse words!!!! Wait so let me get this straight you just did the score, not the time; well that is quite an honor!!  ;D

Fix your halo Jesus why am I even debating weather or not someone "allegedly" said the F word...it's completely erroneous to the premises of my argument...
Once again none of the coaches curse at MSU especially the defensive ones so I know its not true.

Red Hawks Are F ing Awesome  ;D

One situation had nothing to do with the other...That could have easily have been the Wesley coaches going nuts if it were reversed...What happened with Ithaca really had nothing to do with the ref's... with the game sealed by Ithaca, probably had a min or so left to go in the game, we had no timeouts left and they called timeout and set up a play action pass on third down... G flipped out and ran across the field we all followed and he had some words for Ithaca's coach, anyways the situation was resolved and from what I remember the Ithaca coach called up and apologized.. I really can't say much about it I think Ithaca has a hell of a program but don't for a second think your going to come into Montclair and do that... they could have taken a knee if I remember correctly... And yes this is for the Wesley fan I believe the F word was used once or twice hahaha....

Time outs on the scoreboard are for fans. Coaches have communications with the officials, who keep the official number of time outs.

Sounds like much ado about nothing.

Pat believe me when I say that I am one of your biggest fans, and love what you have done for the sport that I played...I must dissagree though,  as a former player I always looked at the scoreboard, with all of the confusion that goes on checks, fronts, re-loads, down and distance...Same with coaches for personal down and distance, percentages.....Its not only for fans, I guess this is a lesson learned, however the refs did not do a good job of making sure that the coaches new the timeout situation, if they did I can assure they would have not lined up in victory formation, "taking a Knee" with Wesley having two timeouts left.

Are you kidding me? What are you, Joe Morgan? Here are some facts about that game:

1) November 29, 2003, for those of you keeping score.

2) Ithaca called zero (0) timeouts the ENTIRE SECOND HALF. So, that's wrong.

3) At the time said play-action pass play was enacted, and "Coach G" went off screaming George Brett-style about Ithaca running up the score, in a playoff game mind you, MSU had two (2) timeouts left. They used them both and scored another touchdown. I'm sorry, but a play-action pass to put you up 33-7 when the other team still has time to score is running it up? In a playoff game?

I have the play-by-play, I can send it to you if your hazy memory still needs a jumpstart. This is also the same game that Aaron Fiorini got his knees taken out from behind five seconds after a pass went flying 20 yards over his head. One of the worst late hits many in the IC Athletic dept. ever saw. Two years earlier, a cheap shot from an MSU player ended our beloved BY's career.

And this is hilarious:

Not because it's not true... who knows it could be, but probably isn't. What is funny about it is that whether or not they "curse", the coaches at MSU are the biggest bunch of crybabies and tantrum-throwers Ithaca sees in DIII.

Besides the above incident, there was the 2006 baseball game where the manager threw a 15-minute dirt-kicking fit, screaming at the umpire that he was a "little-leaguer", after getting thrown out for screaming at the umpire from the dugout. He then went and watched the rest of the game sitting on a fence, leaning on someone's car that wasn't his.

And in 2000, MSU's wrestling coach went after a referee, screaming and screaming at him, refusing to leave the gym until (this is true) the CAMPUS POLICE had to come and escort him out.

Well, the scoreboard is not official. I don't know what to tell you. If you rely on unofficial info, that kind of stuff is going to happen.

Down and distance is also unofficial. I would always take my own eyeballs on the sticks over the scoreboard.

Wow where do I begin, I kind of got hit from all sides. Pat I don't want you to tell me anything lol, I am telling you as a former player  and I think I speak for a lot of former players that are on the post when I say that we all use the scoreboard as a reference. Once in a while you will have a ref pop his head in and say "hey guys I have the official time, the clock is off by ten seconds" same with timeouts. However clearly the refs did not do a GOOD JOB of relaying the message to the coaches about the timeout situation or they (Montclair) wouldn't have been in Victory formation... Guess this is a learning experience for everyone that the scoreboard is for fans only, if you have any questions about score, time, or timeouts wait and ask the refs.

Maxpower-Although I am a rookie to d3, I honestly feel I read the same post every year; be honest you definitely have that blog saved on your computer, especially the George Brett comment. As for the cursing, I thought I did a pretty good job of laying the sarcasm on pretty think. I was referring to the "F" word as the alleged curse word and saying "now I know your telling fables" lighten up buddy its hump day!!. Guess I didn't do a good job, if you read the guys post it was comical, "some defensive coach was saying the F word" and it was a pleasure to have had the opportunity to control the game clock, my job is stressful little things like that make me laugh, so sure ok the f word may have been used.

2003 I stated previously I didn't remember the exact situation, hahaha umm no the play by play won't be necessary, thank you though not one for nostalgia. To be honest with you if my coach had a problem with it I do to! I don't think it was necessary to run that play, and G definitely thought it was uncalled for and unfortunately things happen, from what I remember though it was resolved after the game. Coach Giancola is one of the most well respected coaches in the Country. I certainly don't think you're in any position to refer to him as a cry baby, and if you ever said that to my face about my coach we may have a "George Brett" situation lol, jk man I dish it I can take it

2003 yes I agree it was a very late hit, it was unfortunate I can't speak on behalf of the player that did it. I don't think that reflects MSU or our program, why you always bring that up is beyond me. In 2001 the other playoff game DEFINETLY NOT a late hit, I was a freshmen at the time playing special teams, I remember that play like it was yesterday first of all when you run option, the QB is very susceptible for a defender to really land a clean shot. A defensive player is aloud a step and a half, as soon as he pitched that ball he got caught and it was loud. Omar Lucas was the person who hit him, 1st team All American Linebacker. I have no problem whatsoever telling you if it was a late hit; however that is text book for how you want to defend the option.

The other incidents I really don't have a comment on, they must have been pretty bothered by something though to have reacted like that...Once again those aren't reflections of MSU as a school, an athletic dept and certainly not our football program. Don't forget to save the post to your word doc, wouldn't want that fine piece of writing to be lost!!
