Didn't Montclair actually beat Rowan during the regular season when they had Watson to win the conference championship?

Yes, and the teams met in the regional final at Montclair, with Rowan blowing Montclair out. I was in the stairwell that afternoon.

Red Hawk,
For a minute, Cortland tweaked their offensive scheme to a split veer type of option in 2001-2003.  All the offensive line did was down block and cut block.  Definately slows the D Line down as they start to think twice.  High School football certainly is not the same without being allowed to cut down field or outside the tackle box.  I can't comment on talking ISH as Coach Mac is a real zealot about being classy.

Redhawk-

I agree with XRedDragon77.

Coach MacNeill is a stickler for playing fair and winning with class.  I've seen him call out players during the game for jawing at the opposition.  I also know he called out a player in practice for celebrating an end zone catch.  No way he would stand for a player trying to hurt an opponent.

When did you play Redhawk?  Coach Mac arrived in '97 if memory serves me correctly at this late hour.  It could be there were some holdover players from the previous era who did not fit Mac's mold.  He recruits talent, but you have to be an individual with integrity and also a solid student.  The SUNY system in general can afford to be very picky these days with the quality of student they accept.  With college costs exploding, and the economy faltering, a lot of kids want to go to a SUNY school.

Redhawk,

What years did you play and what position were you?  I find it funny that you think Cortland was the dirtier of the two teams...

XDragon59

XReddragon77,

Just to add on what you were saying, during the years you are referring to, the offensive line was a zone blocking scheme, we did have cut blocking in the package, but our techniques were well within the rules, I am not sure I can remember a single post and cut penalty called on us during those seasons.

I played from 2001-2005 (injury redshirt my soph year) I am sorry if I offended the board, but I stand by my statement. It is a heated rivalry which is a good thing however, I can recall a specific plays in 03 and 04 when they very well could have easily ended one of our player's careers.
I think it was 03; JJ Tutweiler was scrambling back and fourth behind the line and an O'Lineman from Cortland came from behind one of our D-Lineman and put and helmet to the back of the knee pretty ugly. The following year in 04 while at our place the QB rolled out to the right and center mollied out to the left and stood there, the QB  ran back to his left and the center was there to seal the end man, that's fine however he cut him from behind coming outside in. That is bad; our player was out for the rest of the game.  In my experiences with them, very physical, well coached, they talk a lot of smack and do a lot of extracurricular activity.  I have many friends that have played for Rowan, Kean as well as Ithaca and all of them have their own stories about some dirty Cortland player going for a knee. Glad to see this board came alive though it was getting a little morte.  :)

Redhawk,

I do agree that it is a heated rivalry that will be renewed this weekend.  I remember playing against some top caliber Dlineman from MSU earlier this decade, Green, Bolanos, Kelly, and those games were physical wars.  Lots of hitting and trash talk, those games were fun.  Look for a similar smash mouth game this weekend, my prediction is Cortland's D rises up and shuts down MSU for another Dragon victory.

White went to HS not far from me as well.  Newburgh Free Academy.  He may have been slow at the D 1 level in your eyes but he was a stud at the D3 level.  Did you ever have the opportunity to play against him?  We re schemed almost all our blocking assignments around him and Watson!

This may be before your time but do you remember an Adam Palenik?

RE: cortland being dirty

-Wouldn't necessarily call them dirty but they are far from angels.  I only played against them once in the 2003 ECAC game but they were very undisciplined.  Could be the ECAC let down syndrome or the fact that we were up 40-17 at one point but they were getting flagged for multiple personal fouls and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.  Including one of my favorite moments where a Cortland guy ran out of bounds on the SJF side and then threw the ball into the seats.  Why he did i have no idea, but it was funnier than hell...

Upstate,
my last HS season was in 96, and  was a Section 1 guy.  Occasionally stories from accross the Hudson would carry over if one team or another played a crossover game with a Section 9 squad.  That name is not familiar.

He was a track guy and he was from that area.

Bolanos is/was a beast!!! We have a big MSU Football Alumni Beefsteak once a year, that whole crew shows up and are still as big and nuts hahah, all really good guys though.

It really is going to be a great game though, I do believe that MSU can pull it off; The Red Hawks defense is awesome!!!!! I am not sure about Cortland's O, but from what I have seen this year, MSU has the potential to be a very explosive offense with a very solid O'Line, playmakers in WR and the TE position, Bliss is very explosive at his first step and gets up field immediately.

If my memory serves me correctly, Cortland does a very good job at utilizing our team defensive speed against us. It's no secret we are a blitz heavy team and Cortland does a good at the cut-back, all types of screens, draws and are able to pick out the db who is on an "island" when we blitz. I think if we can minimize those big plays that they have successfully completed against us, we will win.

I am sure Coach O'Conner, Coach Giancola, Coach Agresta, Coach Pacifico, Coach Cappelo, and mad dog Coach Cierrie hahah have a great game plan and have got these boys ready to go up to Cortland ready for a 12 rounder. It could turn out to be a game of field position with the difference maker being special teams, we have a very good place kicker and punter.

Dave are you headed up??

Upstate -

We did have one player back then who was prone to doing stupid things like that.  I think I know who you are talking about, and he is one of the few Red Dragons I don't miss post graduation.  I don't think that was the only game he reacted like that in '03.
