Here's a shortcut to the story News10Now out of Syracuse just ran on Alex Smith:

So is Alex on the Russ Alger plan at Cortland? Or was Alger an actual underclassman and not post-grad?

Your post is total ignorance...Russ Alger served our nations military in the U.S. Navy with a full 5 year commitment then came to Cortland as many of our brave soldiers do...just because you didn't have a prayer of blocking him doesn't mean you should ever slander his name on these boards.   Your post is both stupid and un-patriotic.

Unpatriotic? Are you serious? Lighten up Francis.

I was just remarking that it seems like Alex has been in school for a while and that he's playing into his mid-to-late 20s which is fairly uncommon in Division III football. Russ was also an older player for Cortland. That's the only comparison I was making and I was trying to have a little fun with it.

Point taken, I just did not like the perception that Cortland was bringing in players with questionable eligibility.  Alex lost alot of time to two really bad injuries and I think it should be a great story for him.  I don't think it's like stealing eligibility to win games.  The NCAA granted it, it reminds me of the great SU linebacker Dan Conley who had 6 seasons back in the early 90's.

John McGraw

Nah, didn't have anything to do with eligibility. I know Coach Mac pretty well from my time in the Cortland broadcast booth and know the school wouldn't exchange in any of that nonsense.

John, to be fair there have been many NJAC athletes who played while in their mid to late 20's due to military service and other reasons.  I know of several football players going back into the 90's, many basketball players and some baseball players.  State colleges have always been popular among former military members.  Usually they did not have to pay out of pocket for a state college with the Montgomery GI bill.  The new GI bill will probably put more athletes into state colleges as it guarantees to pay what the cost of a state college is in the veterans state.

IC has had a few Vets that have played football for IC.  They went through the Cornell ROTC program which I hope is still in existence.  I played with former Gulf War Vet Troy Canada that played WR for the bombers in the mid 1990s.  He was around 30 when he played.

I've had them at #2 for a while JT in the ERFP and with the way they are playing I don't see them going anywhere for a while...

I'll get my first look at them next week.  Should be able to make the last four games.  Great team speed.  Lot of players getting involved.  Hopefully, they stay reasonably healthy.
