To be honest, Buff St. scares me just because Montclair is Montclair. Clan & pg04 asked waz-up with Montclair. To avoid going on a rant, please read my above post from Sept 18th. In a nutshell it's all about coaching. This team simply does not have the killer instinct and tries to play to their opponent. This is not a knock on the kids, they are great but do what the coaches tell them to do. OK, I'm referring to Coach Giancola and O'Connor. How long can the "D" stay on the field. Any decent team will swarm on D'Andrea, hold him to 75-125 and our vinalla "O" will not be able to handle it. I like the way Fisher is participating this year. I know I will get people defending Coach G, but the responsibility rests on him. We can play a great 30 minutes but have no idea what 110-60 means and I blame the coach. Sorry for the rant, but I'm fustrated. >:(

As an outsider, I see these same things about the team.  I hate blaming things on coaching, but they are obviously a more talented team than they let on against teams of obvious lesser teams.

Year in and year out, Montclair plays dynamic defense but lackluster offense!  It's an undeniable trend.  At times I feel Cortland is very similar but maybe thats just my bitterness when we take one on the chin!

As a former player and coach, I know specials teams are priority #1, defense #2, and Offense #3 almost universally.  There is certainly a reason for such logic and I don't question it, as it's the same philospohy for my HS team.  All I care about is the consistency of the offense.  As a former O lineman...I love to hear about rushing yards and points. Do all of the above and it's hard to lose!

Your post is right on the money and +K. The difference between Montclair and Cortland is that Cortland has the killer instinct, smells it and keeps their foot on your throat. Montclair does not.

The philosophy is to control the line of scrimmage at MSU, which is what they do...Ground and pound if you will... When the offense has to open it up they have the ability to do so which we have seen year in and year out...If you look at their pass to run ratio (I haven't, but I would assume it would be close to even) we have a tremendous RB in Chris who fits the scheme at MSU perfect.

Will there come a time where teams continue to load 8 in the box and we will have to spread it out? Yes, look at Cortland last year; we drove down the field in less than two minutes to have a shot at a rather short field goal which would have won the game. If teams are not going to stack the box, why would be stop running? Fisher doesn't have to put the team on his back and carry them bc of talent that he has to work with, but what Fisher is, is efficient.

We may not go 5 wide every play and it make not look pretty but we get it done...Along with a very good defense and special teams

I have no complaints about ground and pound!  The key is the pounding piece, and being on the correct end of it.  If I ran Iso, Power, Counter, Toss, and Trap as MSU does, they should hang about 24-28 points a game (They are a top 25 team most years).  Anything less than that and the clock domination is useless, as a few big plays the other way can negate the clock control.  Unfortunately Montclair's offense isn't pounding hard enough CONSISTENTLY.

Montclair has whooped me 3x in my career! They know how to win, just not with extra style points.

wesleydad

what is the word on the cortland/rowan game this weekend?  making my first trip to rowan and seeing cortland for the first time also.  saw lycoming this past week and their o is ok, so rowan holding them to 8 is a plus, but their d is at best ok, so rowan only scoring 6 is not so good.  saw kean play wesley and it seems like they did the same thing to cortland, they got and took advantage of the breaks to win a game they should not have.  looking forward to this game as 2 of the top d3 programs hook up.  got word that cortland travels well, so i hope to see some of you at the game.  also got word that rowan enforces a non-alcoholic tailgate, :(((.  guess i will just have to pick up a wawa hoagie and some soda and wander the lot to see what is going on.

Morrisville lost a nail biter to Montclair. Same with Brockport against Rowan. Buffalo State lost to Fisher 12-7. These teams all played what are to be considered upper echelon teams very tough. All of these teams could have won against nationally ranked teams. Will any of these teams win the NJAC? I didn't say that. Could one of these teams take down Rowan, Cortland, Montclair or TCNJ during the course of the year and decide the outcome of the NJAC in the second half of the season? Absolutely.

And I'd be remiss if I didn't ask you what the heck is up with WestConn? Ouch!

Wait a minute, WestConn isn't ruling the NJAC?  What would blueballs err blueblood say?

Keep waiting for them to meet me on the field at the Stagg Bowl. I'm there every year.

My thoughts are that Montclair can't back off for a minute. They also need to get the ball in the damn end zone when they are in the Red Zone.  IMHO they need to take it up a step this game. And by that I don't mean winning by 30 or 40 points, they need to be consistent offensively and for God's sake, does the OC have a clue as to what a screen pass looks like ?
Time to mixup the play calling.
