Ugh. This is going to be really bad when/if a New Jersey Team runs the table and possibly "could" have had home games until the Stagg Bowl (This hasn't happened but it could). What a disservice this does to that hypothetical team. Even those that miss two, or even just one game are being shafted. There needs to be exceptions made. It''s not like it's the BCS Championship game.

Assuming it would make a difference to the NCAA (I don't know how across-the-board their rules are on this), perhaps New Jersey needs to make the exceptions.  I'm sure Atlantic City is salivating over D1 football and basketball betting, but doubt they care much about other D1 sports, or D2 or D3.

Is it easier to change a state law or an NCAA rule? (Given the NCAA, who knows) New Jersey isn't going to take the time to say "betting on games is allowed...except in D2 and D3...". I think the rule as a whole is dumb, whether D3 or D1. But that's veering off into another issue.

I dont see where it says they can't have home playoff games...The article mentions other sports championship games, but I don't see where it applies to D3 football games...

Amazing to see the double standard between states...I just bet against UNLV when in Vegas, which was what, 2 miles from the strip?

Pat Coleman

All NCAA championships events, all levels, all sports. And I confirmed with the NCAA.

The NCAA did exactly the same thing to Delaware when they were going to include college sports betting. Until they lost in court and were limited to pro football parley only. I know DIII is a concern here but the NCAA ruling also effects all divisions. Meaning no NCAA basketball,  lacross, baseball or any other sport tourny games will be played n the state.. DI II or III
Football !!! The ultimate team sport. Anyone who plays DIII football is a winner...

bman

Then I wonder if the NCAA will allow scholarship athletes to transfer with no penalty...
No Army/Navy game in the Meadowlands?

bman

It only applies to playoff games or tournaments.

Division I FBS  doesn't have an NCAA championship so it is not at all affected by this.

In other news:

Rowan (+3) at Cortland State this week.  Cortland is 3-0 vs the spread at home this year, while Rowan is 1-2 on the road (0-2 outside of New Jersey.)

Bad news for the NJAC.

http://www.d3sports.com/notables/2012/10/new-jersey-banned-from-hosting

It looks like these are all "neutral site" competitions. So NJ can't host the Stagg Bowl or the College World Series or the Meadowlands can no longer host for the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Are they also banned from hosting playoff games? I don't see anything in the article that states the teams are banned from hosting home playoff events in any sport. But I guess that could fall under "championship events"? Need a little more clarity.

I don't understand why the NCAA would do this.  It makes no sense.  Does moving the competition to another state do ANYTHING differently?  If a college athlete wants to bet on a game or shave points or whatever it is, it doesn't matter where the game is played.  This is just stupid.  I understand maybe not having games in the middle of the MGM Grand, but to apply this entirely to states is ridiculous.

It's just an attempt by the NCAA to PUBLICLY discourage gambling on its sports as much as possible (while benefitting from the interest it generates in a myriad of other ways). The NCAA, and most major sports in this country, publicly oppose sports gambling whenever possible. Most also know that it benefits them immensely and I think the hypocrasy is especially prevalent in the NFL's injury reports, the major purpose of which is to limit insider information in gambling circles.

Interesting Pat. Then why is Wesley allowed to host playoff games? Delaware also has a sports gambling law on the books

nevermind, I see the difference in how the laws are written.

Pat Coleman

Yes -- and there was a lot of talk around that law a couple years ago but Delaware bowed to the pressure.
