it's possible that no one is at school to update the web sites yet.

Teams can only bring 100 to camp.  Most teams have kids on like a "wait list" roster.  Some of the 100 will drop and be replaced by kids told to "stay ready".  Even during the season you'll have some "stay ready" kids replace someone on the active roster. Disciplinary reasons... kids quit, kids get injured.

The press got preliminary rosters this week from NJAC media day.  Rosters will be posted online when teams break camp.

JT, thanks for your response and now I have a better understanding. +K Now here comes the but why? Why limit the rosters of the conference to 100? pawesley says that Wesley would not join the NJAC due to the 100 roster limit. Why do some bring in more then 100 and others are limited to only 100?

Also league regulations and size of schools.  Smaller schools like, lets say cortland have terrific facilities, but not enough room for players to work out or money to pay extra coaches and JV staff.  Cortland runs the JV within its regular program with nothin added, non travelors still practice and compete in the varsity practice, compared to, say... ithaca who has a completely seperate JV squad and coaching staff, (by the way cortland still usually beats ic's JV despite that advantage).

Persoanlly I am a huge fan of the 100 man roster, it makes recruiting a crucial part of the system which is part of being a good coach, and it makes players have a chance to earn their spots and have more of team chemistry.  anyway theres my 2 cents, feel free to agree or disagree.

GO C-STATE

Thanks for the feedback and also from everyone else. Your comment of better coaching, recruiting makes sense and the only drawback is when you get into the playoffs and play teams with 200 man rosters like Mount, Wesley etc you then have a disadvantage. It is my guess that the majority of the elite eight in playoffs are 200 man schools. That would be an interesting question to answer.

Only 65 are allowed to dress ifor playoff games.

There are other reasons:

In the case of Mount Union there is an obvious coaching, system advantage.  Kehres is the best and he has that program rolling for two decades now.

Financial aid. Merit scholarships. Private schools may have more money to give as aid, since they have less govt restrictions then public schools.  Last time I checked... the average aid given to Mount students made Mount Union cheaper than going to Rowan.

52, not 65.

And financial aid may make it cheaper in the immediate term, but I am still paying off my wife's student loans.  :-\

oops... where did I get 65 from?  Is that a pro roster?

Got me -- hard to keep track of all the roster numbers, between the NCAA and individual conference rules and such.

I noticed on the NJAC site that media day will be Aug 5th and it will be by phone. It will be interesting to see the projections. I'm guessing the coaches will pick Cortland #1, Montclair and Rowan #2-#3 (either order) then Kean, B-Port, TCNJ, Willy P, W.conn, Buff St. and Morrisville. Let's see what plays out.

I also noticed a (3) page story on the NJAC on Montclair and my friend Big Al C. was not mentioned among the coaches for this year. Any comments?

Hey Rams,

Word has it Big Al C and 1 or 2 others are moving on.

According to 2007 data reported to the Federal Government under the Equity in Athletics Data Act (EADA), only one team had more than 200 players on its 2007 opening day roster - Mount Union with 215.  Next closest was Mary Hardin-Baylor with 177.  Wesley had 125 players, which put them at No. 26.

I'd tell you more but that would spoil the feature I wrote for Kickoff. :)

Hey Rams,

catchball,

Hope the summer is good for ya. All I know is that we have a WR Trans, Iachetta at DL and Fisher is the man. I was not happy with him last year and that is in the past. Let's take one game at a time. Is there any other GQ on new guys on the team?

Al C. is a class act and I wish him well. Got to know him his senior year and he bled Montclair Red. I noticed his mug in the pics at the April Beefsteak. I hope he gets a shot at coaching somewhere. He is a great guy. Please send me a private note if you know the reason he moved on. See ya at Wilkes. I think this is my 1,000th post so :

LET'S  GO  MIGHTY  RED  HAWKS  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

catchball,

A couple more things : 1. When does camp open?
                                          2. When is the Red & White game?
                                          3. Do we have a scrimage scheduled before Sept 12th?

Cortland isn't exactly a small school with 5000 undergrads but athletic budgets within the SUNY system are quite limited.  Personally, I think there is an advantage to be had with the roster limit.  Incoming players get more reps, have earlier opportunities.  It is hard to get that when you bring in 50+ freshmen.  To a recruit, I think that would be a positive.

Do the Morrisville, Brockport and Cortland coaches get the same pay?  Do the assistants?

New York State salaries are a matter of public information if you can find it.   I believe coach salaries are individually negotiated but could be wrong.

And most assistants are grad students doing a GA position , i know Cortland has been doing that for years now, im sure its the same for many other schools.  They give the GA's some tuition money and some sort of stipend i believe.

It's my daughters birthday, and now she is (4) months pregnant, and Grandpa to be will most likley stay in NJ. I will also miss the Buff St game due to an alumni event in WVa. Does B-Port have live stats? Should be a fun year. Will you be joining in on the Pick-E'm contest this year? Again, thanks for your efforts on the Pre-Season Poll.

Hey guys, I will be writing for MSU football this season for the school newspaper.

In any case, after looking at the NJAC coaches' poll, I was surprised to see Rowan at the top, I was sure that it would be Cortland State at #1. Rowan isn't even in the top 25, while Cortland and Montclair are, but we will see how things pan out. Preseason polls don't hold a lot of meaning.

I'm hoping that the Red Hawks learned their hard lesson from the end of last season, where they were one half away from a NCAA berth before blowing up against Kean and not showing up against Albright. I think the team has a lot of promise and the offense should score more points hopefully.

Can't wait to see Cortland come to Montclair this year, last year's game between the two was very entertaining.
