Dlip concurrs pep. To any newcomers here, the kickoff write-up is simply fantastic in comparison to any other publication (online or other) that has to do with D3 football. These guys do an incredible job with research and fact finding. As a twenty five year hard core fan of Union college football and a six to seven year avid fan of D3 football in general, dlip can say he would not want to start the season without it!

Here's the Lindy's poll.

I love RPI, but top 25?

I agree. Didn't RPI go 4-5 last season? And with a trio of wins over 4-5 Rochester, 3-6 St. Lawrence, and 4-6 Castleton State to boot. Forget top 25. Are they even top 75?

And what about Illinois College in at #13? Twelve spots ahead of perennial MWC champ Monmouth (IL) who beat them 55-14 last year?

So in all seriousness, and maybe Pat can answer this better, where does this disconnect come from? I mean, I've felt the polls at times overrated the Bombers, but at least you could sort of make an argument most years. But a 4-5 team in the Top 25? A team with 45 straight wins at #3? Do they overvalue/undervalue certain criteria? Returning starters? Reputation? Or are the really just incompetent about the whole thing?

I don't know -- it depends on who does their ranking from year to year and how much homework they do.

For example, in addition to the Division III preview and ranking for USA Today, I also do the Division II and FCS preview and ranking. I don't consider myself to be an expert on either of those levels of football, but those that week or two per year, I work my tail off to provide a credible ranking, doing as much research as I can and talking to people who do know what they're talking about.

So ... who knows if the Lindy's person does the same, but I don't believe anyone from any magazine has ever contacted us for an opinion on who's going to be good.

They are just dumb or arrogant for not contacting you.  ::) RPI at 4-5 and St.John's at 6-4 make no sense. Widner was 9-2 but losing most of their O-Line and QB + 2 LB's on "D" puts them at #6, give me a break. Fisher at 9 and Salisbury at 18 makes no sense. Then UWW at 3 tops the cake. I realize the poll is not accurate, but it gets the D3 Football blood stirring. I have not seen this much activity on this board in a long time. Thanks Gordon and thank you Pat for keeping us informed. ;)

Actually, Haupt is back at quarterback for Widener but still, that isn't enough to put them No. 6.

The Rev admits that of all the people here, I am one of the least knowledgable. Thankfully Charles is so bad that he makes me look good. I digress. The Rev took a look at the Lindy poll and even I know it's jacked up. And let me tell you something: if I know it's jacked up, it's got to be bad.
Look forward to the real poll here on D3 Football.

East Region vs. National Poll, IMHO #6 is way off.

Regarding RPI, there is some scientific evidence behind this showing that teams fare EXTREMELY well after experiencing 5 head coaches in less than 18 months.  Most people on these boards have not been able to witness said evidence, but LD11 has in fact viewed it with his own eyes, and it is not a myth.  Lindy's is spot on with this one, and to be honest they may even be 'playing it safe'.
