Good luck Wesley! Got get'um today!

wesleydad

getting ready for week 1 of the playoffs.  heading out to dover for the wesley game.  cool, crisp, sunny weather, great for a football game.  i am hoping that framingham wins the toss and defers so wesley gets the ball first and sets the tone for a long day for the framingham defense.  I hope that wesley is aggressive on both sides of the ball and the defense finds a way to cover the short passing game.  special teams also have to step up and with the shorter roster will likely do so since many starters will find their way onto the field for kick coverage.  ski and pawesley, see you at the game.  figuring on a smaller crowd since kids heading out for holiday break.

Wesley just had a 105 yard pick-6 called back on a penalty that would have made it 42-16.  FSU now gets the ball back for 1 more shot at the goal line.

FSU scores 35-22 Wesley.

It is baffling.  the defense looks lost.  chasing receivers, allowing easy receptions, blown coverages, QB running all over for first downs and then you look at the scoreboard and they have only given up 1 TD in the second half and that could have been avoided if not for a dropped int in the end zone.  Maybe the d is not as bad as i think, it just looks chaotic, but somehow works.  The offense seemed conservative with very few long passes, one for a TD.  Plenty of yards again.  The O line has to play better.  I know they have to play better all around to win, but maybe they are playing good enough.  We shall find out next week when they take on Hopkins who won easily today.  On another note, St Lawrence scored 23 on Mount who only had given up 34 all year.  Hmmmm.  If there is improvement they will a tough out for anyone.  The offense has plenty of weapons.  Hoping that George, who did not play in the second half is only dinged up and will play next week.  Big TE is always useful.

Well, the Wesley defense did tighten up in the second half, though.  You have to give them that.  If that 100 yard pick-6 wasn't called back for roughing the QB in the second half, the score would have been quite a bit different.  They were able to keep a decent amount of pressure on the QB, so adjustments were made.  We definitely take Callahan for granted these days.  He had a solid day with 4 TD's and over 400 yards in the air.  I mean really.  If there is a better Gagliardi Trophy candidate out there better than he, I have yet to see it......

.....I was also surprised that Cortland State beat Salisbury.  Salisbury turned the ball over 4 times in the game and the defense just didn't get it done.  I was hoping that they would win.....

did the D really tighten up?  why was a 100 yard int possible if the other team did not drive the ball inside the 10.  Framingham moved the ball.  The defense only had 9 players on the field at one point forcing a timeout to be used with the ball inside the 10.  they came out of a timeout and had to run players onto the field.  this just looks crazy.  being positive is one thing, being real is a totally different thing.  this defense looks lost most of the time yet somehow only gives up so many points.  the LB hardly ever seem to be in the right place to make a play.  Callahan's stats are surprising since the offense seemed conservative today.

i was too, until I saw the 4 turnovers.  that was the difference in the wesley game, they did not turn the ball over.  once that happens the gulls have little shot at winning.

They did only allow one TD in the second half and the defense had 5 sacks for the day, so you gotta take what you can get.  Anyways, one thing I am noting with Wesley's opponents is that they are really milking the clock.  It obviously pays to keep the ball away from the Wesley offense.  I know that Wesley doesn't control the clock with the rapid fire offense they run.  However, today was the first time that I noticed an opponent soaking up time from the get-go.  Framlingham even got a delay of game penalty from it in the first half.  It looked to me that the QB was caught napping.  It might be just me.

How do you find the D3 Bracket Challenge? Thanks.
It ain't over till it's over, and when you get to the fork in the road, take it.

Besides the Hulk that Salisbury had at Fullback, Cortland did a textbook job at stopping the Veer. He was a stud up the A gaps. Defensively, Cortland squeezed the FB and had bodies on the QB and pitchman at all times.  Those turnovers weren't flukes.  Lots of moving parts in an option attack and unanticipated contact certainly disrupted the timing involved in reads, pulls, and pitches.  The QB and Wing/Slot were getting drilled almost every play. The Dragons were terrible v the pass this year, especially in 3rd down scenarios. Verse the run, they played well all season!

Despite the loss, congrats on a solid season to the Salisbury guys.
