4th and 1 for JHU on Wesley 12. I say let them score and take the ball with time.

dedragon

Turn over on downs. Wesley needs to bleed the clock, but JHU has 3 TO's left. Need a 1st down.

dedragon

1st down run, TO by JHU. 1:34 left to play.

2nd down run, TO by JHU. 1:29 left to play.

3rd down pass to Baynard, 1st down. TO by JHU. No more TO's by JHU. 1:24 left to play. Kneel down 3 times for win.

Final Wesley 42-37. On to Mount Union.

Good season for JHU, they never quit.

Congrats to the Wolverines for moving on, because that's ALL THAT MATTERS.

Where do I start?  How do you have 4 turnovers, 3 of them really bad decisions by Callahan and still put up 691 yards of offense against a team that was supposed to be pretty good on defense.  It makes no sense at all.  The defense played well for 2.5 quarters and then disappeared, well until the last drive when they make a huge stop on 4th and 1 at the 12.  Wesley was clearly the better team, yet found a way to let Hopkins come back and make a game of it.  I have not idea anymore as to what I am going to see when I go to a game this year.  They could get beat by 60 next week or they could find a way to make a game of it.  The offense can be really scary if they eliminate mistakes.  The running game was strong today.  Callahan overcame the mess in the first quarter to put up crazy numbers.  The defense is what it is and somehow finds a way to stop the other team just enough.  The 4th and 1 call at midfield in the 4th quarter was bad, just bad.  At that point in the game you have to punt and make them go 80+ to get back in the game.  They also could have put the game away with a fumble recovery that they tried to pick up and missed it and Hopkins goes down and scores.  Do they have a chance against Mount, probably not, but who knows.  Weirder things have happened.  Play mistake free and who knows, but for Wesley that is a tough order.

On another note, the officiating was atrocious.  The Wesley D backs finally challenged receivers and made some very nice plays only to be called for pass interference.  One was called when it was clearly a push off by the Hopkins receiver.  Kept the drive going and Hopkins scored.  Be consistent, well maybe they were, consistently bad.

I sat in front of Wesleydad and saw the same things.  Wesley was definitely the better team, but man those mistakes (and really poor calls by the officials) made this game an unnecessary nail biter.  Wesley overcame:

3 first quarter interceptions by Callahan.  It must have took a lot for him to get refocused to throw over 460 yards in the air and 4 TD's.  You can always count on Joe!!!

1 fumble by Shade down on the JHU 1 yard line in the 4th quarter that would have put Wesley up 49-28.  That was painful.

A precious lost fumble recovery opportunity on the 50 by the Wesley defense because the defender wouldn't simply jump on the ball and tried to run with it in the 3rd quarter.  THAT would have been the game right there.  Wesley was humming at that point and the defense was really putting the pressure on the JHU QB.

98 yards of penalties.  I'm in total agreement with Wesleydad in saying that the officials were BAD.  There were multiple interference calls on Wesley defenders who were looking back at the ball and blocked the pass.  I saw no interference whatsoever.  Really bad.  Those penalties were responsible for at least 14 points in the end and were on 3rd and longs.  Terrible.  There were some serious holding penalties that weren't called on JHU that were obvious as well.  I don't usually harp on officials, but this time, well.....

I have to say that even though the defense did get burned on the typical crossing and slant routes, overall, they did well, and hell, they saved the game, pure and simple.  The defense was tired out there but they held on that last 4th and 2.  They pulled it off and stopped the running back who was pretty much tearing them up in the last two possessions.  Cudos guys.

For the first time this year, Wesley did not rush the clock and worked diligently on the clock the entire game.  And it worked for the most part.  It kept the JHU offense off the field.  I know Wesley had the possesion of the the majority of the first half (I don't know what the final possession times were for the game and I am too lazy to check right now, hehehe).  It certainly helped in the long run.

Jamar Baynard.  The guy ran for over 120 yards and Okike.....over 240 yards in receptions.  Wow.  Baynard was pretty worn at the end of the game.  His running game along with Callahan's 60 scrambling yards kept the JHU defense guessing.  Damn impressive putting up over 600 yards of offense against a top 10 team......

So, Wesley brought an IED with them and it blew up in their face.  However, they lived to tell the tale. THAT is talent and determination my friends.

I didn't realize that Today Joe Callahan broke the DIII single season passing yardage record.  Well done mate!   ;)

I am interested to see how Wesley does against Mount. At first thought, I don't think it's going to be as much of a game as some in the past. It's a given that all these mistakes will lead to a swift L to the Purple Machine. Hopefully Wesley gets their act together.

pg, nothing makes sense this year so they might as well go out to Mount and make a game of it.  They could lose by 50 based on some of today's game or they could force Mount to actually play a game into the second half with what they also showed today.  I have no idea.  Just trying to decide if I want to make the trip this weekend or wait until the following weekend for the possible Mount/WIAC game.  Don't think I will make the 6 hour drive twice in a week.

Ill post my thoughts on todays game when i get home. Im somewhere in PA still. Wesley was able to hold the ball for 34 minutes and rack up 691 yards of offense. Pretty impressive.

I think its not too far out of the realm of possibility to say Wesley can beat Mount. It will take a near perfect game, but its doable. The offense can play with just about anyone. They just need to keep firing away until the time runs out. They darn near did it in 2013. Im just glad it will be a 30 minute drive instead of a 5 hour one!

This is true. It has been a wacky year with the east region teams. And there's really not much to garner from Mount's game with Albright  other than Mount's D has been good. But against teams we aren't sure of.

Wesley just needs to go to Alliance with the attitude of "F*^# it, lets do this!"  They have nothing to lose, so play!

Wesley ran 96 plays today. Johns Hopkins 78. Imagineif Wesley hadn't run some clock. I would say the worst call of the day was an interference against a Wesley player that was inside of the reciever and would have caught the int. if not held by the Hopkins wideout. If Wesley can get through the first quarter next week without some of the crazy things that have happened in previous meetings with Mount Union then maybe they can keep pace with them. Then again could we see an 70-68 score? Could be fun to watch
Football !!! The ultimate team sport. Anyone who plays DIII football is a winner...

D O.C.

Wesley is packed with athletes.
There is a missing key. Is it the team being on different pages a lot of the time?
I suppose all the teams left can win it all if they minimize costly mistakes from here on out.
