Well, and one thing to keep in mind -- the information that we and the Gagliardi folks posted publicly did not include a student's GPA, but the voter packets do. We just didn't make that stuff public.

If GPA is remotely related to the award, then the finalists should have that info released to the public. If it really doesn't matter, then don't advertise that it is an award based on football achievement, academics and community service. Don't get me wrong - I would be totally ok if the award was based on performance on the field. But the Gagliardi folks then should just say it. We (Americans) are always trying to make something more than it is. Always trying to make things politically correct. Drives me insane!!

And the winner of the Best Dang D3 Football Player of the Year Award is: _____  and leave it at that.

Say what you are doing and then do what you said.

GPA is a private thing. There is absolutely no reason to release it. Just because you are interested in DIII football does not give you any rights into the player's private information. That's ridiculous.

Personally I think it's a bit silly to include academics since schools have such different standards. There is no way you can tell me having a 4.0 at most DIII schools is at all equivalent to a 4.0 at places like Johns Hopkins or Carnegie Mellon. So I really don't see the point of including it except to make sure the student is in some kind of good standing. The Academic All-American teams already take care of this silliness.

It's also why I believe I'm correct in assuming academics and community service are just boxes to be checked off when weeding out candidates. All the finalists have a sufficient amount of both, leaving football as the major determinant.

Setting aside the Gagliardi discussion, anybody who's been paying attention lately knows political correctness issues are completely out of control on college campuses alone, never mind everywhere else in our society.

To be eligible for a CoSIDA Academic All-American award, you need to have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA.  You can check the CoSIDA website to see who was All-America and All-District and I'm pretty sure CoSIDA lists the GPA's in their release if you are really interested in the specific numbers.  I personally wouldn't release the GPA unless it was the key factor in receiving an award (i.e. Academic All-America), if it was a very high GPA and I'd still ask the athlete if he/she was okay with it being put out there.

We are agreeing from a diff point of view. I don't think GPA should be released at all and believe it is private - hence FERPA laws. But this award promotes that it is partly about academics, when it is not. So, take it out of the consideration for the award. Don't advertise that it is one of the criteria. If a player is not doing well academically, then he probably wouldn't be on the field in the first place. I'm not complaining that anyone doesn't deserve the award, I'm only saying that the wording about academics should just be removed.

Analogy - ISO Certification. If you put a sign on a door at a place of work that is ISO certified and the sign reads, "Please Keep Closed", and the door is open, you fail the audit. If you take the same situation and remove the sign and undergo an audit, you pass. Nothing else has changed other than the 3 words on the sign. Again - Say what you are doing and then do what you said.

And I agree that currently the academics is just a box to check......so they don't fail the audit. So, we agree in all aspects of this conversation with perhaps my thought that they should just remove the criteria about academics. Just my thoughts.

And CONGRATS to Callahan!!! One heck of a player!! And Congrats to Wesley....the only team in the East to have a player win the Gagliardi and only team in the South to win. Impressive! Much respect for the coach and the program.

I was initially planning to make the trip to the Stagg Bowl. But now am trying to find a bar that has ESPNU in Newport News.

I don't see any reason to remove it. If it is a primary criteria for weeding out candidates then it should stay.

That being said, Joe Callahan was a Academic All-American first teamer and STU's David Simmet was also first team while Gettysburg's Kodie McNamara was second team. So three of the nine Gagliardi finalists were Academic All-Americans and that's probably not a coincidence. Not sure how far from the cut the others were, but I'm guessing they all had very respectable GPAs for their institutions.
