He's handled himself and the Pack pretty well in his 1st half on the field. A lot of throws to the TE's (9 times)...and a successful 2 minute drill to close out the half with a 2 yd TD pass. Coach McCarthy hasn't allowed him to really throw down the field at all. One funny moment on the Packer TV after getting stopped for maybe a 1 yard scramble on a third down play, the camera caught him running toward the sidelines and his eyes looked like dinner plates.  Rich Gannon, doing the color, noted correctly "...look at the size of his eyes...!!"  McCarthy stated at half that he did "an excellent" job!!  I thought he was better than RGIII in many ways...at least Callahan wasn't on his back after nearly every passing play or fumbling hand offs like RGIII was. Showed poise and looked like he belonged on the field, not easy in front of 80,000 at Lambeau.
Finished with a 97.7 QB rating.

I had the crappy Cleveland broadcast so they didnt go into any detail about Callahan's backstory, which would have been cool. Thought he played well as the game progressed. Looked nervous at first, but then capped it with a nice scoring drive. Although who wouldnt be nervous going from playing in front of 3000-4000 to 80,000. He showed good zip at times on his ball, and eluded a couple of blitzes nicely.

Was crushed that nobody local could get the game, however, it will be on tomorrow on the NFL network at 1PM EST, so I will be glued to the TV then.  From what I see so far, Joe did a hell of a job for a DIII QB playing an entire half without any major errors.  At least he can say that he outpassed RGIII and didn't get intercepted either!  I am really proud of him and stoked to watch him tomorrow.   Wow, hey?  How many DIII quarterbacks get that kind of opportunity???

Get NFL Game Pass and you can watch live, then over and over unlimited times, any time you want.

But, you're right, he had an extraordinary opportunity for ANY UDFA, let alone a DIII'er. Being able to play an entire, uninterrupted first half of his teams first exhibition game. Probably unprecedented. Plus, to have a teammate like #12 on the sidelines between series helping you out...it doesn't get any better than that.

As well as I thought Callahan played, it wasn't until the career journeyman QB Josh McCown came in for the Browns, that you realized just how much Callahan needs to develop before becoming an NFL QB. You will see it for yourself when you watch. McCrown's ability to see the field and react with confidence appropriately set him apart for all the other QB's playing in that game. But a game like this for Callahan should do wonders for his confidence. As a Packers fan, I hope he gets another opportunity in the preseason to show what he's got. On the other hand, wouldn't be surprised is McCown becomes the Browns #1 when RGIII doesn't get it done.

There were a couple times Callahan could have run for a first down while back to pass, but threw the ball away instead or one instance were he forced a throw to a TE double covered tightly in the EZ just prior to his TD pass. But for the most part, made the right decision and didn't turn the ball over. Wait until you see Cody Kessler and the safety he handed to the Pack. Cody Kessler, bigtime guy from USC, who also threw a TD pass on his first career pass, looking about as unaware of his surroundings and the situation in his next series as any QB ever has, embarrassingly running out of the end zone scrambling out of the pocket.

Actually, that is a true characteristic of Callahan.  Early in his career at Wesley, he did the exact same thing where he opted to pass rather than run.  Trust me, that ability to run is there and it takes time for him to get comfortable enough to start moving those legs.  All you need to do is watch his highlight film on youtube to see how well he moves the ball.  It isn't that he is fast, rather, he has an uncanny ability to launch when he feels the time is right and it screws up the defense when he does.  He did good playing with the big boys.

In the locker room on Packer radio after game, interviewed by Larry McCarron, former Packer and radio color man:

Watching the highlights, I am just beside myself with giddiness. I can't help but giggle like a little girl.  It seemed like yesterday when Joe showed up in practice as a freshman and all I could hear from Coach Knapp was how good this kid Callahan was going to be.  I distinctly remember myself thinking "yeah, shia....who could possibly replace McSweeny?"  Now I am watching him throw a TD pass at Lambeau field.  For my Packers nonetheless!  Absolutely nuts!

CNU85 is this news to you or not ?

Very much surprised. I had no idea it was coming and I just had dinner with the new AD last week. Kudos for all for keeping it under wraps until you can tell the team. It will be interesting to watch the process play out in finding a replacement.

That game is on the NFL network now.

Ski that was awesome!! I thought he did great. Let's keep it in perspective just how different of an environment he was in. He was playing against another world of talent and another world as far as the physical environment (fans, hoopla, TV, etc). Well done young man! dlip is so proud of this young man and wishes him nothing but the best. He deserves everything that comes his way.

On another note Hope Solo commented on the game after watching it on the plane ride home from Rio:

Interviewer: "Hope, what are your feelings on the game you just watched?"

Solo: "Both the Browns and the Packers played like cowards!"
