Anyone going to the game today?  I'll be leaving my house by 11:00.  Any word on the weather for the game today?

XREDDRAGON77

Any Cortland folks have comments about the scrimmage with Hobart.  I have not found anything yet.
Dan P, if you are out there fill us in.

Just got back from the game.  Fortunately, the rain held off for most of the game.

The defense looked incredible.  I feel sorry Rowans opponants this year. "NOT"  Nothing negative to say about the defense.  The only dissapointment was the second unit giving up the touchdown halfway through the fourth quarter.  It would be nice to have the shut out.

Too many penalties by the profs.  They need to work on that.  I'm sure they will improve on that.

Special teams were off, with Spahn missing 3 feild goal attempts and 1 extra point.   Looked more like a timing issue.  Spahn should be more accurate the next go around.

Offense has the most room for improvement.  Many holding penalties.  Timing seemed to be a little off with the recievers, but that got better as the game wore on.  I think they ran the same draw play at least 25 times.

Overall, it was a great outing by the profs.  It seems like prof fans will have alot to forward to. "ie Salem or bust".

And also it looked like JT found the pounds that I lost :o.

I was there too - observing south region squad CNU for the Mid-Atlantic column.

If you take away some of the big CNU mistakes, Rowan wins 17-0.

Those field goal misses - some of them appeared good from the stands, so they must have been just off.

Rowan D was most impressive - allowed nothing from CNU all day and the CNU touchdown was setup from a slew of RU penalties.

Accorsi will have plenty to work on the next two weeks to fine tune, but the Profs appeared deserving of their high billing in the preseason.  Orihel seemed to work back in well, moved well - should have had a few more completions if receivers held on.

Could have also been  59-0 if offense had more closing power.

Good point...offense stalled quite a bit and the missed field goals don't show up on the board.

That's probably true.  I'm my own worst critic. Thankfully it is football season.  I lose weight during football season.  Started working out and cutting down on the carbs. No beer, chips, or bread today.  Have a goal to lose at least 30 lbs. by Salem.  That will put me at around 205 or so.  At 6-1 205, I should see my abs again.

Mrs. JT just feeds me too well.  We're talking gormet stuff. And I haven't worked out seriously in over 18 months.

Rowan looked good.  Lot of intensity on defense.  Rowan needs to run a little better, hell CNU was in cover 3 trying not to give a big play.  Spahn was just missing with plenty of leg so that should come around.  Nice long TD pass to the new guy Markham.

I didn't think the ref crew was that great, hopefully they get better.  Some of those calls were questionable.

I thought the Profs, overall, looked very strong today.  The whole defense (Tosh, Heimerl, Bellamy, Garren, etc ... too many to mention) was very impressive and gave CNU fits for the entire game.  From the way their 2 QBs were getting hit (hard and often), I hope they had a lot of Aleve for the long bus ride home.  I give a lot of credit to CNU ... they didn't give up and fought to the end.

Accorsi has to have more confidence in his offense.  Too many FG attempts (with 3 misssed) on relatively short yardage inside the 20 - 25 yd. line.  The inside handoff on 4th and 2 inside the 20 was probably the worst call of the day .... that is if you discount the 25 draw plays.

I thought that Orihel (23 of 33 passes for 269 yds, one td and one td running) played well and suprisingly didn't look rusty after the long injury layoff.  As Pat Cummings said, Orihel would have had even better stats if the receivers would have held on to some drops.  Edwards was having a pretty good day before he got hurt.  Hope its nothing serious.  Some of the young/new guys showed promise as well.  Markham, the new WR, looks like the real deal also.

Should be an interesting year. ;)

"However the Cortland offense and defense looked in mid season form. No official scoring was kept. But Cortland would have won very comfortably had it been an official game. The Cortland defense shut out Hobart on all of its first team drive attempts. Meanwhile the Cortland offense had multiple long drives and three touchdowns. WR Anthony Morat caught two touchdown throws from Alex Smith, and RB Matt Rickert also scored."   -www.CortlandFootball.com

Agree a few too many draws.  Edwards said it was a tweak.  Accorsi said with Rowan up by a lot no reason to keep him in there.  IMHO I think Accorsi wanted to work on FG's after being up early.  Not that he wouldn't have taken TD's, but when drives stalled he wanted to get some live work.  When the CNU punter muffed and kicked it through the endzone, Accorsi had the choice

1) Take the ball at the point of the illegal kicking

2) Take the safety and make CNU free kick from the 25

I might have taken the ball at the point of the kicking and taken four shots at a TD.

JT:

I think the reason those drives stalled was due mainly to the play calling, i.e., "a few too many draws" as well as some other dubious selections.  I think your choice of words, a "few" too many draws is an understatement.

Another example, as I posted earlier, was the 4th and 2 inside the 20 call.  Profs must have 20 plays with a higher percentage of success in that situation.  For example, how about rolling Orihel out and, if its there, throw it ... if not, run it.  God, the kid's 6'4", if you shot him, he'd fall for over two yards.

Call me old school, but I think that the place to "work on field goals" is on the practice field.  They did the same thing last year at CNU with the same results.  I think they were 1 for 5 inside the 25 last year.

That's good news about Edwards.

                  Montclair 21          Iona 7

The score on D3Football is 21-14, it is as above FYI

New Rochelle was an area of downed trees. Roads closed etc. During the game it sounded like a cannon went off and it was this huge tree that split down the middle and later in the game another pop and the remaining half was split in half. The weather was not that bad with the exception of the 4th quarter.

The Montclair Defense is the real deal. They were awsome. Big hits and turnovers in big spots. We should have had 14 more points. The offense did not exist. It was 3 and out all day. The number of plays were 73-40 and the time of possession was 35:00 - 24:00. It appeared that the D was on the field longer.  With a week off there will be a lot of work to do with the O. Jump just seemed out of sink, and we were too predictable. That being said with 2 weeks to work at it i think we will be ok. We just can't have the D on the field all day. It's all about adjustments and we have some work to do. We are now 1-0 and now it's time to get prepared for Springfield. Take the  W and let's move on.

Later today or tomorrow I will up-date the Pick-Em's.

It ain't over till it's over, and when you get to the fork in the road, take it.

I like that line.

Accorsi mentioned something about kicking FG's against live competition.  Othertimes he would go for 7.   I have to listen to my tape, but that was the jist of it.

It did look like they were testing or trying some things on offense after going up 21 - 24 nothing.  Trying to get the timing down with some of the new guys.  I could be wrong but that was vibe I was getting.

I've been going through the photos first.  Had some mosture and fogging problems.  Have to split soon for a "Labor Day" party at the 'rents.  But I should have a lot of things done by Monday noon.
