This article about Penn State about Joe Paterno, mention an old Glassboro College football coach and having the players replace divots on the field after the game.  This had to be none other than the Bear - Coach Wacker.   Can anyone confirm that this was the Bear that the writer is talking about?  Click Here

Well I'll start by saying "No disrespect to Fisher and RPI" who have beaten Cortland over the last few seasons.  The ECAC win in 2003 was clearly a launching pad game for Fisher.  RPI has never lost an ECAC game...go figure.

I think the problem is, Upstate, that the ECAC game is played exactly one week after Cortaca.  For the players involved, Cortaca feels like a national championship game.  Life and Death type stuff.

Win or lose in Cortaca, anything short of an NCAA invite is probably seen as a huge letdown.  Now I personally do not feel this way.  I love upstate football, and to me the ECAC game is a chance to test oneself against a great team which you never see during the regular season.  But to the players, and probably the IC players can be lumped into this, it just doesn't measure up.  I suppose if you sweat and beat yourself up from the middle of August until the middle of November, and the NCAA's don't come a calling, you probably pack it in mentally after Cortaca.

It probably seems like a cop-out to someone who hasn't experienced Cortaca.  But it is a huge letdown, even to the fans.

Fisher probably beats Cortland in 2003 regardless - they were obviously going places.  And RPI wins fair and square in 2006, albeit against a 4th string freshman QB and a depleted roster.  But they did win convincingly.  Remember how bad Union beat IC several years back?  Did that seem representative of their seasons?

This isn't just a win-lose thing either.  Cortland's blow-out ECAC win in 2004 was a game devoid of intensity.  I heard the same thing on the Empire 8 boards when IC beat up Mass-Dartmouth.  It was like the Bombers were sleep walking.

I dunno.  I'm a big supporter of the ECAC's, but I'm probably in the decided minority.  Maybe some of the former players from Cortland and IC can weigh in?

As a former player, I don't particularly agree with the idea that the ECAC is a letdown.  Certainly the Cortaca Jug game is huge, but for all the seniors involved, playing one more game as a Red Dragon means a great deal.  Cortland should have been an NCAA team last year, but remember, going into the RPI game they had several key players out with injuries.  I remember 2002, we had beaten Ithaca in the Cortaca Jug game to finish 8-2, and barely missed out on the playoffs despite one of the 2 losses being in OT.  Cortland responded with a dominant performance in the ECAC game beating Westfield St. 30-7.  So in my opinion, while missing the NCAA's is certainly disappointing, Cortland has come prepared and ready to play in their ECAC attempts.

I must agree with X 59 Dan.  I was a member of the 97 playoff team and would have given almost anything for one more game.  Unfortunately we lost many close games in that 3 season stretch and seemed to end up .500.  We were an independant then.... so Springfield, Wash and Jeff, IC, and the Jersey schools were week in and week out wars.  Ten years later I still get amped thinking about 2 1point losses to B'port, 1td losses to IC, and a nail biters against Rowan and Wash and Jeff.  As for the newer crop of Dragons, I could only hope they feel the same and not piss away priceless opportunities.

hmm my thoughts on the ECAC.. I played in it my SR year and it was one of those situations that we were on the bubble of making the playoffs and lost to Rowan. Umm I was up in the air about it, on the one hand it was a chance to play another game, then on the other you could just tell everyone was like F this we lost to Rowan and morale was down. Especially the younger guys you could tell they thought the game was pointless and prob had the worst week of practice ever. We ended up loosing to a team that we were much better than, who, who knows if that may have effected recruiting for the following season. I personally enjoyed it, I just went out there and just played with my best friends with a smile on my face it was sad bc I knew it was the last time I would ever have the opportunity to be on the field with my budds, but it was another good memory to add to the list...

The only down side though is really getting the whole team to really commit to playing as hard as they can one more game, and putting in the practice hours

Birdgang,
I know what you are saying in your ECAC comment.  As a team that was an NCAA contender every year, an ECAC bid could be viewed as a step backwards.  As a middle of the road squad which has not had an NCAA bid in a few seasons, an ECAC might be a step up.  Anyway I look at it, If my coaches were preparing for a game.....I myself would be preparing both mentally and phyisically.  I have a tough time digesting "It's just an ECAC game"!

I know it is not football but in basketball Coach Brown at NJCU has the Knights prepared almost every time they make the ECAC tournament instead of the NCAA's.  I think he usually gets them motivated by making them feel like they got overlooked and they usually play pi$$ed off in the ECAC and take it out on other teams.  This last season being the exception but they did lose to another NJAC team.

Hey boys!  Venturing over here to see if anyone knows much about Buffalo State.  What are their chances of an upset win against St. John Fisher this weekend??  I have heard they have some pretty good athletes on their team.  Any information would be greatly appreciated!!

Fear the unknown.  Buffalo is a great area for talent and it looks like they have the coach that can turn it around.  They are the perfect team that is good enough to upset many teams.  Just look at what Willy P did to Wilkes.  Bad to good can happen over one season.

Interesting.  I did get a message from a former Cortland player, who basically said the ECAC's don't mean anything to the players.  So there you have it.  Some are into it, some aren't.

I agree.  Buffalo State seems dangerous to me.  Fisher better be careful not to overlook (which I'm sure they won't)

ECAC games:

I think how you end the season is a huge factor in terms of how you would look at the game.  If you start off the season 8-0 and ranked in the top 5 in the country only to lose your last 2 games and miss the playoffs, the ECAC game is going to feel like a funeral after the wake.

Now if you start off 0-2 with no shot at the playoffs and then run the table....then you goal for the season might be to make the ECAC's and prove something to yourselves and for what might happen next year.

And like someone said above, sometimes you think you deserve to make the playoffs but get the ECAC game instead.  Then there is some motivation to prove how good your team is even more.

expecting big things this sat... Finaly it is safe to say that MSU has a solid Full back who was able to re-establish the spot that was pretty much missing in action since Hando #39 dominated it in all star like fashion a few years back... since than we have had a few guys in the mix one imparticular stands out number 44, I played with the guy and can't even remember his name.. anyways everyone always used to line up against him in 1 on 1's bc it was kind of easy to get around him, thank God for us he graduated (or at least I think he did).. Vinny Vacatipaine is the real deal!!! he helps pave the way week in and week out for Mr. McCoach to continue his steller play on the field.. Wilkes your way to slow, I mean wayyy to slow to compete with us.. its on, and yes I am talking trash!!
