Well....I am afraid that it is a little of both.  I don't want to take anything away from Morrisville.  They are much improved and have some great athletes.   The word that others will hear on this game is throw on Cortland.  Throw, Throw, Throw until they prove they can stop it.  Our secondary and our special teams are suspect right now...especially the secondary.  Yes, they have some big losses to fill but someone is going to have to step up.  They are very tentative, perhaps its the inexperience, I don't know.   Morrisville threw in the flat all day long.  We got beat early on an out and up and after that...we gave them much too much space (just my opinion)  Morrisville could pretty much get 6-7 yds anytime they threw to the flat.  If not for Morrisville giving up the big play, this might have been a different outcome.  I think the offense was sound...(you can't complain about 51 points)  Miles played well, not spectacular, but well.  He still seems a little out of synch with his receivers at times.  In both scrimmages and again today he throws a couple of ball to absolutely no one and I am not sure what that is.  On the other hand, He  Threw a couple of beautiful balls to Guaragno and Hajnos.  Giuliano was the workhorse.   If I am not mistaken, he was the only one to carry the ball, which surprised me a little.  He had several long TD runs and ended up with the Single game record for rushing yardage.  So...I am pleased with the win.  I am concerned about our defense and some vulnerabilities that good teams will exploit.  I would rate the offensive an A-.  The defense C+  They have some work to do and the week off will give them some time to figure it out.  They have to.

The Kickoff capsule on Morrisville was wrong.  They had about 100 kids on the team, not 33.  And they had a lot of returning starters, as opposed to what was written.

I agree, the Cortland Defense has a lot of work to do to get better heading to Rowan.  However I give a lot of credit to Morrisville.  They are loaded with talent at the skill positions and special teams.  They will do damage in the NJAC this season, I have no doubt of that.  The prediction of them going winless is not going to hold up very long.

Anyone have any details on the Willy P - Brockport game?

I wasn't at the Rowan game in Bridgewater. 24-14.  Winning 24-7 late.  Bridgewater is known for a big running game.  Rowan kept them at 67 yards rushing.  However they gave up too many big pass plays.  Two of Rowan's captains (in the secondary) from last year graduated.  Offense a little out of sync, a couple of deep catchable balls dropped.

I'm concerned that there may not be any game breaker running backs in 08.  I think Bridgewater is decent team, and Rowan always starts slow.  Can't wait to see the new QB, a former WR from Univ of Delaware.  He sounds like he's pretty good.  Hopefully they can work out some kinks before Cortland.

As per Brockport's web site...

Senior tailback Garet Lynch (Valley Stream, NY/Springville Gardens) rushed for 186 yards on 36 carries, including an eight-yard run in the second overtime period, to lead The College at Brockport Football team to a 26-20 victory over William Paterson in the season-opener and Brockport's first New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game.

Web site roster says around 100. Looks like Coach Dow did a really good in mining local talent out of the Syracuse area and picking up players from the junior college ranks. And the Syracuse players are probably a mixed bag since most of the better players in the area go to school out of state or end up at Syracuse (should be relegated to I-AA football). Among the recruiting class he brought in, Dale Ross might be the best. He was an all-state running back at Westhill and he ran for a state single-game record 569 yards in a game against Marcellus last year. He obviously showed what Greg Robinson would call a "flash" yesterday when he ran back a kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown. I wouldn't be surprised to see him starting in the backfield at some point this year since the Mo'ville quarterback was the team's top rusher yesterday.

Good call John.  It appears to me Dow is doing a strong job recruiting talent into Morrisville.  The problem I saw with their running game yesterday however was they could not open up holes on the line.  Granted they were facing a tough run defense.  As we know, the offensive line tends to take the longest to gel together.  With so many new players in a young program, you would expect the o-line play to lag.  Let's see where they are in Week 10.

I saw Dale Ross play a couple of times in high school.  He will make a lot of noise in the njac over the next 4 years.  He was rumored to have some D1 schools calling.  His return for TD yesterday was a glimpse of what is to come and I agree that it won't be long before her is starting in the backfield.  Another  section III talent on on Morrisville is Wendel Williams out of Onondaga Central.  He had a very good game yesterday.   Morrisville QB played very well.  I think they will surprise in the njac.  Earlier I had picked brockport as my sleeper...  After seeing Brockport struggle with Willy P and watching Morrisville first hand...I might want to change my pick.

game sounded ugly for the dragon D

looking back on Dan's season preview

"Observing from the sidelines, the Red Dragons offense appears to be well ahead of the defense mid way through training camp."

can anyone say hit the nail on the head?

I don't think there is any doubt but I think we knew that going in.  They will get better but there will be growing pains.  Outside Nagle, Smith and Haas who all play aggressively, they seemed tentative.   I am concerned about Rowan exploiting our secondary.  I am not sure how scout team works at Cortland these days but we probably have two of the top throwing QBs in the league and we should certainly be able to give the secondary some work over the next two weeks.  I know that Miles and Pitcher need to work against the scout D but maybe that doesn't come until next week.  I would be throwing them at our 1st and 2nd secondary this week.  Rowan is going to air it out.  These kids need to figure it out pretty quick.
---just an opinion, I have every confidence that our coaching staff will have a plan and it will most likely look alot different than mine.  In any case, we better get used to scoring alot of points because Def isn't going to come over night.

If I could jump in here I have a few minutes before I need to go learn about the world and this is my opinion only...
Yes it was quite a battle, didn't actually think coach was sure up until Thursday. Fischer shows a lot of confidence and has a good arm, big tough kid. We will see how it all pans out on Saturday against Wilkes. We are  chomping at the bit and attitude is very high and everyone is anxious and pumped.  Everyone knows what needs to be done, we've planned, practiced and now we need to execute what we've been doing since 8/22.
We are ready to rock and roll !!

catchball,

Thanks for answering clandfan's question. I'm psyched to see the boys are ready for some football. I'll be at the Train Station early. Looking forward to a great start for the Red Hawks on Saturday. This may be our year to go dancing.
