Sorry. We were enjoying HS ball at Worden, IL. during that time. I thought you would of known that. I'm sure there is a JUCO chat room somewhere. Is there anything relevant you can add? I didn't think so. If isn't a your knock on Lee, it's something that happened 50 years ago. That is irrelevant to this board.

FU up 32-30 at the half. The big freshmen Zimmerman is playing well.

Thanks, Titan Q. Live stats was very hard to follow. No video?

Thanks Dennis. Relevant is in the eye of the beholder.  ;)Things that happened 50 years ago are what makes the heritage of basketball what it is.

Back in the old days, there was so many great fringe college teams in the area. I loved talking about the old days with Lee and miss him. How many remember Sanford Brown having a team? A great story. These guys coached and played the game for the simple love it. This is an old story but worth the time to read: http://www.riverfronttimes.com/stlouis/underdogs/Content?oid=2464554

I was looking through the Washington University record book which has the schedules of every team going back to the 1904-1905 season.  In regards to the fringe teams, in the 1942-1943, 1943-1944 and 1944-1945 seasons, the institution had to turn to the military bases, such as Olathe Air Base, Scott Air Force Base, and the Missouri National Guard for competition.  They also played factory teams such as Emerson Electric, Anheuser-Busch and organizations such as the Granite City DeMolay and St. Louis Argus.  Not to mention a team known as the 2:30 Club.

Incidentally, the first game against a current Division III team was against Nebraska Wesleyan in 1919.  Grinnell became a mainstay on their schedule the following year.  The first game against a current SLIAC team was against Westminster in 1930-1931.

Here are some interesting tidbits after a week and couple days of games...

The SLIAC is 2-18 vs nonconference D3 teams (not Provisional)  the only wins are from Principia over Loras and Illinois College.  That is far and away the worst record against Non conference D3 of any of the 44 D3 conferences.  Yes, because of our midwest location, we play some very good competition,.... but that's pitiful.

High Scorers:

Anumu, Principia   23.7
Daniel, Greenville   23.7
Brown, Greenville    19.0
Trisko, Spalding   18.5
Long, MacMurray   17.5
Feehan, Eureka      16.8
Drey, Iowa Wesleyan   16.0
Interesting that only Tim Daniel was a scorer in the conference last year, at 12.8 points per game...Drey, Long and Trisko were non starter role players, while Anumu, Brown, and Feehan are new to the SLIAC as transfers.

NOTE... the fact that Westminster is the lowest scoring team is not a shocker... the fact that Webster is the 2nd lowest scoring team is a disappointing surprise.

Box score notes:
Chris Davis missed Blackburn's first two games with an abdominal muscle tear, but played this past weekend...he had 12 points in 13 minutes on Friday, but played only 5 minutes on Saturday... hoping he's ok

Eureka playing with pretty much a 7 man rotation, and virtually no size on the boards... inside the paint problems will be tough to overcome...

Fontbonne's Bryce Zimmerman (6'8" frosh) had 2 nice games up at Illinois Wesleyan... limited minutes, but 19 points, 4 rebounds.  5 sub 6' guards rotating around, I can't figure out why Cody Ettinger isn't getting more minutes - he's clearly capable of scoring....nice game vs Rose Hulman with 9 points, 4 steals in 14 minutes...

Greenville was missing starters Brian Ehrsmann (ankle) and Kenny Greene (wrist) vs Millikin--- hoping both will be back for conference games in early December... if you only see one SLIAC game this year, make it a Greenville game.. it's really something to watch, and when Tim Daniel finds the range from 3, it's pure form shooting.  If Greene and Ehrsmann get back, SLIAC teams are in for trouble.. Greene and DeAndre Brown are a heck of a 1-2 punch with the system...

Iowa Wesleyan... haven't seen them yet... today at Maryville....Big up in production by Mitch Drey, role player off the bench last year, 16 ppg this year... Chris Fowler, the good and the bad, 12.5 points, 6 assists per game, but 5.5 turnovers per game

MacMurray really impressed me against Dubuque... Mac got beat, but extraordinary shooting by Dubuque's Andre Norris and Jacob Mohlis won't be repeated often... Mac's intensity on defense will give SLIAC teams a rough time... Coach Creal has to figure out how Deavis Johnson fits into the offense, he was wasted wandering the perimeter most of the game vs Dubuque... the mighty midgets 3 guard combo of Keltner, Cameron, and Frazier are quick and smart, but I doubt any of them come close to 6'...  and Brent Long in a huge comeback win vs IIT goes for 27 and 10, can do good things vs the SLIAC.

Prin is off to a great start, newcomer Adaku Anumu completes the ironman five perfectly, but I wonder what their answer will be against the stepped up pace of Greenville or Iowa Wesleyan, or the pressure Defense of MacMurray.. it's a long season with such a short bench... the return of Conner Savoye from Japan in his studies may help the depth situation... just noticed, Jeff Ross 78% from the field, only 2 3 point shot attempts, makes sense to go to the basket...

Spalding Coach Kevin Gray getting his frosh ready, 7 freshman have seen time off the bench... Spalding hosts Wash U on Friday... I'll give up lots of TV sports on Black Friday to go see that one... Nick Trisko vs Wash U's big men should be interesting... I'm wondering if he'll shock me again.... Wash U has been amazing in reloading from all the personnel losses, I'm not optimistic that I'll see a close game....

Webster... tough start, got to figure things out, but Coach Bunch will have them ready for conference..If the scoring doesn't come from Hunter Ward, where will it come from?   Not sure 10 guys averaging 6 points per game will make the top 4 in conference...  Somebody has to take over, maybe new face Xavier Dortch..

Westmin... it's gonna be a long season.....why the drop off?  A great place for some immediate JC help....

I'm beginning to form opinions as to whom will compete for the top 4 conference spots... but I'd better wait until I see Iowa Wes, Spalding, Webster in person this week.

Note... No 1 Augustana visits Fontbonne on Tuesday...  I'll root for the Griffs, but.....

This is old Red back again. Thinking of changing my name to Ms Irrelevant  As always Hope fan, great job! Hope fan should have a weekly preview show every Monday streamed by the SLIAC  website. Could even take calls. I doubt anyone takes the time to know a D3 conference like Hope knows the SLIAC. And he has no dog in the fight so his opinions are never cloudy by BS. Gosh do you know what a heart throb you are to every aging basketball junkie widow out there! lol, don't want Mrs. Hope to get jelious.

FYI - Webster plays at UMSL tomorrow in an exhibition, though it's not listed on Webster's website.  Just in case anyone had any interest in attending.

All true, but don't stroke his ego too much, it's big enough as it is -- except  his wife always beats him at cards, so that keeps him a wee bit humble.  :D :D

Pod cast, that is what is called. Dennis, thanks for the tip on Worden, IL. Found this neat website, but I am sure being irrelevant as I am, it is outdated, but still kind of cool. Looks like Lee was there for three yeas and made it to the Regional Finals one year. Didn't know Lee until the 70's. Man loved basketball and could talk your arm off. No wonder we all became friends. Dennis check out the website.  http://www.illinoishsglorydays.com/id232.html    It has Lee's name in it so that has to make it relevant, right? And let us know if it should be updated. Hate to see the old small town histories disappear.

Miracle at Maryville Part 2... OT win for IWC  Steve Archibald takes it to the key, shovels it up, ball sits on the rim, falls through at the buzzer

Quick notes
Chris Fowler was sensational..  28 points, distributed the ball, unstoppable
Marquis Jones... after Maryville big men dominated the first 10 -15 minutes, he came in, bodied the big guys, rebounded, scored, turned the game around
Brock Butler.. missed good shots in first half, came back and hit everything in the second half, including monster 3 point play off rebound that cut MU lead to 1 in last minute of OT.
Austin Walker, not a regular, not much PT, comes in and buries 4 3pointers during the comeback...

This will definitely be the nonconference game of the year (sorry Prin.. yours was an exhibition game ;D) and puts IWC right in the midst of potential conference tourney discussion.   Can't remember rooting so hard for a SLIAC team as I did tonight!!!

Maryville could be a very good SLIAC team, probably contend for a top 4 spot right away... wonder if anybody has thought of that.. :o :o :o

Box score says crowd was 105... well, maybe, if you counted the 15 cheerleaders/dancers, the 7 or 8 guys at the scoring table, and the two kids at the concession stand... There were 10 of us on my side of the court

The SLIAC should supply me with a press pass... this is the fouth time I've had to pay to get into a game this season.. if my wife finds out...... ;D ;D ;D ;D
