You probably do not need to add Iowa in parenthesis every time you mention IWU.  At least not in this thread, unless Illinois Wesleyan is playing a SLIAC school.

I'm actually looking forward to some good back-and-forth with hopefan in this room about how the upcoming IWU @ Principia game played out. I can already see the steam coming out of Mr. Ypsi's ears. :D

Sorry to disappoint you Greg, but I've already weighed in on this issue.  Since IWU can now be applied to any of THREE schools, I trust I can figure out from the context which is meant.  If posters use the term in ways that truly ARE confusing, shame on THEM.

In other words, clarify which IWU ONLY if it is potentially confusing.

If Idaho founds an IWU, I may have to reconsider! ;D

There are two ways to take care of that situation (see Hopefan post on 1/31/16):

1) Have a respected Eureka Administrator sit with the unacceptable fans and quickly and decisively deal with anyone who gets too enthusiastic. The only problem with that is the poor administrator is at every game and he/she does not want to dampen the enthusiasm of the fans.

2) Have the referees deal with it. They are the ones closest to the action, they can judge what the fan says or does and whether it crosses the line, and they will only be at the site a time or two a year. More than that and the Commissioner should be challenged.

I have been on all sides of this, HBC, AD, Conference Commissioner and it is not an easy issue to handle, but the visiting team and the officials should be treated with respect.

Looks like I may have missed the most exciting finish of the year... Westminster loses 93-92 to Central Christian of Missouri (located in Moberly, Missouri, the Saints play a schedule of mostly Christian schools, with a roster of kids from all over the country.. how in the world did these guys ever find Central Christian of Moberly, Mo.??)

anyway, exciting ending.. it must have been!!!  :

0:43   WANDS,CARTER made free throw   89 - 90
0:43   WANDS,CARTER made free throw   90 - 90
0:33         Turnover by HENDERSON,DUJUAN
0:33   TEAM TIMEOUT by Westminster (Mo.)
0:05   WANDS,CARTER missed 3-pt. jump shot
0:05   CARLOS,NICK offensive rebound
0:00   CARLOS,NICK made field goal   92 - 90   (Westminster)
0:00      92 - 93   AUGUSTIN,YBERSON made 3-pt. jump shot    (Central Christian)

A lot sure happened at 0:00!!!  Obviously impossible.. but it would appear Westmin scored on a putback at less than 5 seconds to go ahead, and Central Christian hit a 3 pointer after that to win it.... wonder where it was from????

Anybody else rooting for the big upset in Elsah tonight, when Prin hosts IWU***??

In their previous game, at IWU***, Prin and IWU*** were tied with just over 2 minutes left, but IWU*** scored the final 10 points of the game to win 84-74.

I would love to see Prin win this game. Hopefully the long bus ride for IW will enhance the likelihood of a Prin victory.

I agree with all that is said here, but clearly the refs need to be told to feel free to start kicking people out AND start throwing techs around to get the message clear. The issue is refs don't want to be put in those situations and they certainly shouldn't be expected to be the crowd control at a game. They are officiating the game in front of them... they shouldn't be expected to officiate the crowd and do the job of event management.

While I also appreciate that no one wants to dampen the enthusiasms of fans, but that doesn't mean allowing the behavior to continue is allowed. I actually watched an AD and a women's coach at a game the other day... deal with their own fans at a local gym who had barely crossed the line. After an "incident" late in the game where the students didn't like the call from a ref and few got within a few feet of the ref (not hard to do in Division III gyms)... the AD walked over and clearly told them enough was enough. They didn't cross the line the rest of the game (nor had they prior to the "incident") and their enthusiasm wasn't damped one bit. There is a line that can't be crossed and if worrying about dampening the atmosphere is stopping what is best then we see where the problem is.

I am sorry if you see it as a "poor administrator," but that is their job in many ways. They need to set a tone and expectation level and if that is not met, than take action. They will not longer be a "poor administrator" if the students (or any fans) are behaving themselves. They are only a "poor administrator" if they are not being listened to or respected... and then that means there is a FAR bigger problem and maybe the games should be played in front of no crowd at all - as an extreme measure.

I have seen many schools who have had problem crowds where the conference finally has enough with the administration and basically tells them to fix it or deal with major consequences. That usually has followed a long process of clamping down on the school for the behavior - it isn't a shock to those in the room the topic is being discussed.

And while I understand you stating it isn't an easy issue to handle, I disagree. Sometimes when the situation has clearly crossed the line it is very easy to handle. Step up and clear out those who are the problem. Send a message. If that message isn't received, keep sending it with harsher and harsher penalties until ti is received. Students will get it quick if they want to continue coming to games.

IWU*** over prin 72 67 final   same ol, same ol for Prin, close, but not enough... a three pointer from the twilight zone by Adaku Anumu cuts it to 3 with a minute left, but wide body Marquis Jones gets it down low for a 3 point play at 0:48, IWU*** back up 6, and it's over... 2nd half was pretty ugly for both teams, but Chris Fowler really got it going, pretty much won it single handed for IWU*** between his scoring and passing to the open man..... A first for me at Prin, I took a little walk around a section of the Prin campus to find someplace to get something to drink, finding the cafeteria/pub... really nice, and several students said hi to me (what's this old buck doing wandering around?)   Just a really nice atmosphere...

WOTS... whether a reaction to this site or not, a 'directive' was generated from the Commissioner's office to each of the conference members regarding crowd control at the games...

POSITIVE RESULT last night at Prin.. a couple family members of a player from one of the teams were yapping at the officials in the men's game for most of the first half...  it was bothersome to me, but not loud enough to be heard all over the gym... lo and behold, the refs had enough, reported it to the scorer's table, and a Prin Administrator came over and had a 'gentle' conversation with the family members at half time... in the 2nd half, they directed all that enthusiasm to rooting for their son and his team...THE WAY IT SHOULD BE....  Hooray for the refs, hooray for the Prin administrator....

^^^ Kudos to everyone who had a role in this. Seems to provide evidence that people read this site and pay attention to what people say and think and will take seriously the things that need to be taken seriously.
