AND speaking of Iowa Wesleyan going to Uniontown...

ANYONE with Iowa Wesleyan going to Uniontown should adjust their schedule during that stay to find time to visit the Flight 93 National Memorial.  The park/museum is about an hour and a half from Uniontown, a beautiful trip through the mountains of Pennsylvania... and I guarantee it will present memories and inspiration far beyond what ever Iowa Wesleyan can accomplish on the basketball court.  I give it my absolute highest recommendation....The school should put in the few extra $ necessary to schedule a team visit there...  it will be a lifetime memory.

By the way, in reiteration on my first team All Conference selections of Elmo Smith and Sean O'Brien vs the coach's having them on 3rd (not even second?) team, I present the championship game stats..

Elmo Smith...29 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists

Sean O'Brien....34 points, 18 rebounds

The stats you list above are system stats...

In SLIAC play, Romulus has numbers that or more or less equivalent to those of Sean O'Brien.  This is true in points per game, field goal percentage and rebounding.  Sean O'Brien actually needed two big games against the system to get to those numbers.

I think this vote could have easily gone either way...and I say this having watched my share of Westminster games.

The junior class for Westminster all individually had their share of big games...the junior class individually had their share of games in which they did nothing to bolster their all conference prospects.  Jimmy Villalobos also looked like an all-conference player at times.

They both had a super game in the finals, system or no system...  I used it, obviously, to lend credence to my selection of them on MY first team..
And who is Romulus?

The Westminster roster used to refer to Romo Tabb as Romulus Tabb.

It will be interesting to see where Westminster goes and whether or not they are in the same pod as Washington University.  The speculation that they may have Benedictine host a Washington University pod in Lisle is interesting.

Whitewater is 416 miles away and Hanover is 413 miles away...where else might they both go?

The data in my previous post is quite revealing... both positive and negative... but I think absolutely the most interesting piece of info there is Greenville, Coach Barber's record..

I always considered Greenville the 'close but no cigar' team in the conference... some good talent every year, but somehow they always finished BARELY out of the top 4... and the record shows that, Coach Barber's teams made the conference tourney once in 11 years.

THEN   BANG    Coach Barber makes the stunning decision last year to try the system, emulating Grinnell's way of doing things... and wow.. 2 years, 2 conference tourney appearances, a thrilling first round win this year and a loss in a very exciting game for the tourney championship!!!
TAKE THAT you System haters!!!!
Going to the system has certainly brought Greenville to the forefront of D3hoops chatter nationally... Coach Zimmerman deservedly won the Coach of the year honors by taking his 6 man Prin team to the conference tourney, but I'm sure Coach Barber's name came up in COY conversations!!

Congrats to the EC women who won a barn burner against a very good GC team on Saturday to earn first ever NCAA tourney berth.

Unfortunately, instead of the 25 minute drive down the road to IWU or shorter trips to Wheaton or Wash U., it's on the road to Crestview Hills, KY to take on defending champs, undefeated Thomas More.  A tough task to be sure, but this is a very poised EC team with the ability shoot the ball from the perimeter.  Knock down some 3s and anything can happen.

Bad news, then GOOD news from Uniontown, Pa for Iowa Wesleyan in the USCAA Tourney

Yesterday in the first round, Iowa Wesleyan lost to Concordia Selma, 81-71.... IWU was in the game through the first half, then Concordia pulled away to a double digits lead through most of the 2nd half.

However, just in, Iowa Wesleyan comes back today to beat Florida National, 94-87.  Steven Soukup shows his SLIAC MVP form going for 37 points, Brock Butler adds 24.  This despite likely foul trouble for Michel Soukup limiting him to 17 minutes, still had 5 assists, 1 turnover.  Unfortunately, not sure if there is a consolation championship game for Iowa Wesleyan or not... it does NOT show on the brackets.    just found out no more games

D3rs Berea and Illinois Tech both WON their 1st round games and are scheduled for semifinal action tonight... 4 seed Illinois Tech plays 1 seed Maine Fort Kent at 8:00 PM EST, Followed by 3 seed Berea playing 2 seed Concordia Selma at 10 PM.

Nope, no consolation brackets. The tourney was set up in a way to guarantee every team two games, to help make the travel worthwhile. Hence, the extra game that IWU played today.
