FYI - note Webster's two point win at Lincoln Christian. I told everyone earlier that I thought LC was better than advertised and would pop someone along the way this season. They almost nailed MacMurray a few weeks ago - and it was a near miss for Webster tonight. Games at LC will not be a gimme for any of the SLIAC teams.

Final from Greenville, Illinois
Greenville 91, Principia 58

Not much of a surprise from Greenville.  Greenville was just extremely too much for Principia.  This might be one of the worst Principia teams I've seen in my 5 years in the SLIAC.  Wowzers.  I think the kids work hard, just not a lot of talent.  I talked to Chris Watts a little before the game and he seems like a real nice kid.  He was doing a lot of pre-game shooting down the our auxiliary gym and seem to really work hard and trying to improve.  Just a side note there.  STAT ME PLEASE!

Greenville

BENCH NOTABLES
Bucanan - 2 pts

McLaughlin - 2 pts
MacWilliams - 1 pts

Principia was FG: 24-60 (40.0), 3FG: 4-18 (22.2), FT: 6-12 (50.0)

More exciting was the Prin/Greenville girls game.  Greenville is only the 2nd team to hold Christina Speer (a stud for Prin Women) under double figures in scoring.  Greenville was hot, hitting the first 8 shots and holding a 19-7 lead.  Greenville held an 18 point lead in the 1st half but let Principia battle back.  Prin had 2 leads of 1 point but Greenville laid in on late and won by 12.  Prin's team it a tough team that will keep fighting.  Big shout out to the Greenville Lady Panthers who won all of 7 games last season.  Nine games in this year, they have 6 wins.

I know this is the men's board, just a quick shout out.

I hate to miss my first game with Greenville playing well, but I will have to miss that game.  I'll post some interesting statistical info on the Maryville/Greenville series though on Monday.

Eureka 75, Maryville 63. There's a write up of the game on our web site. There are probably few surprised by this final score as it seemed everyone on here thought Eureka would win. Of course, that was the case at Dominican Wednesday, so it was a nice comeback game for EC. Maryville used a different line up than they had been using, I believe. They played very hard, but could never make up for a poor start. They sure don't mind going to the bench early and often. 5 new players came into the game less than 3 minutes in and the subs didn't slow down until the game ended. I doubt Saxton is actually as tall as 5'9'' as he's listed on the roster, but he had a good game and he's fun to watch. Holland is a good looking player, who I would play more than 22 minutes, but what do I know?

It was a workmanlike effort for the Red Devils. Now comes 3 road games in 5 days including back-to-back Webster and Westminster on Friday and Sat. First is a stingy Lincoln Christian squad though, who has lost 2 home conference games by a total of 3 points.

Feel free to post it here, too, if you haven't already. People come to our scoreboard pages who won't go to your site.

Shout out to the Griffins. Big win at a place they haven't won at in awhile. I had to look twice at the scoreboard. When was the last time a SLIAC team hung 90+ at the dreaded "Beaver Dome"? Not bad for a bunch of young kids.

I wonder if Hopefan got lost trying to leave Carlinville!! ???

hopefan

so what do yeasterdays results show us, good and bad?

1)  MacMurray is for real - I haven't seen them yet - maybe I should have travelled xtra to get there - But beating Westminster is a great SLIAC win - NOW I have to see Mac and meet no 1 fan Mac Attack

2)  Greenville doesn't yet have a "BIG" win on their resume, but that squeaker over Fontbonne in December may prove down the road to be bigger than it currently looks.  Greenville is doing it with veterans, and their lack of size doesn't appear to be much of a detriment in the SLIAC.

NOTE with Mac likely beating Prin on Tuesday, if Greenville can win at Maryville, a battle of two 4-0 teams happens on Friday when Mac goes to Greenville - I wouldn't have thought this would ever be a game that would hit my must see list, but it just may turn out that way.

3)  Newcomer Eureka, also at 3-0, also has to be for real - beating Millikin and losing to North Park puts them at a level above the norm for a SLIAC team - but of course they have'nt yet played the stronger part of the SLIAC schedule, and again, a one point win over Fontbonne may prove to be very big as the season rolls on.

4)  Fontbonne looked very good against a bland Blackburn squad - and Fontbonne was without the best frosh guard I've seen in this conference, Cartez Parker.  Parker is out for several games as a necessary first semester grade under dispute is resolved - I was fortunate to get a lot of the story behind it - it is not "ugly", but the necessary committee to resolve the issue will not be available for another week, so unless higher admin steps in, Cartez will miss several more games.  People close to the situation are Very disappointed in the school over this - Fontbonne would do well to resolve the issue quickly, and to make sure that possible academic issues are monitored more tightly rather than jumping up and surprising everyone at semester end.
Sorry about the bandwagon - anyway five starters all played well for Fontbonne

5)  which leads to the unforseen total collapse of Blackburn this season - I went over yesterday - now I admit, students weren't back to campus yet, but except for the Fontbonne fans, the only noise I detected from Blackburn was a lady screaming at the ref for most of the game.  Wow, how does a team return the conference player of the year, another first team all conference player, and several others from the bench, and just throw in the towel this early in the season - I got to meet Beaver SID, a well spoken enthusiastic student, who lamented to me, and then posted earlier, how this program has turned moribund  -  I feel bad about it, because Blackburn was THE place to be in the SLIAC last year.  And I'm sorry, but under a new coach, there was no defensive intensity, an offense that for a large part of the game consisted of an outside weave that accomplished nothing - this is one hurtin'scene - the least I would do would be to turn it into the Zak and Zeb show to get some excitement back.

6) and Webster???  my initial conference pick  -  beats Lincoln Christian by 2?????  No matter what Mac Attack says, LCC that I saw against Maryville was bad - they had a little guard who shot from everywhere and a football player in the middle who boarded, but nothing else.  Webster looked bad against Wash U earlier, and I credited Wash U's superiority  -  I don't know what to think about Webster after seeing yesterday's result.

7) Maryville is so young  -  they have a good frosh class of guards - a recruiting class this season with some athletic size will set them up for several years to come, but they're not going to win many this year.

8) Westminster -  interesting writeup from Eureka SID about a little turmoil within that team with Davis in the middle of it  -  I saw the same thing last year, and that could hurt them -  they have the talent to be the best team in the conference, a very good coach, two very good guards though one remains out with a bum ankle - let's hope whatever problems there are can be resolved.

So on Tuesday, two games of interest  -  Webster goes to Westminster - an opportunity for Webster to turn it around-   and Greenville comes to Maryville - Maryville is a team that could beat someone on a hot night - Greenville needs to come prepared to stop Maryville's push it up the floor style.  Mac and Eureka get Prin and LCC for what should be relatively easy wins.

There you are FC  ;D

Incidently - I got to meet Coach Mckinney for the first time over at the Fontbonne - Blackburn game  -  a very pleasant chat and an exchange of a couple old stories  -  nice that as he is likely wrapping up his coaching career in the near future, he has a good bunch of kids to work with that should be able to take him out as a winner.

Also just noted that Teddy McGrath's name did not appear in the Maryville box score vs Eureka - anyone have an answer?  I'll probably find out Tuesday.

Quality post Hopefan. It was good to see ya again yesterday. Next time you travel give me a holler. Gas is way to expensive. I do have to agree that this was not your basic BC team. It was even noticed in the pre-game that there was no intensity. Strange situation.

On the subject of FU's bench:
Chad Fournie is my sixth man of the year until I see a better one. The mass substitutions we are seeing in todays game is something that is very recent. I still have my doubts about it. It was not to long ago that most good teams only needed a strong seven. I still think with teams like MU, that on occassions this hinders the kids ability to get into the flow of a game.

Mac Attack

In the sixth man category, I would suggest MacMurray's Nick Schmidt. In my opinion, MacMurray would not have won games against Webster, Huntingdon, and Westminster without him. His rebounding, defense, and inside scoring - not to mention the quality minutes he provides when our starters are sitting down - have been of tremendous value. Haven't heard yet if Greene and/or Robertson will miss any time because of injuries last night, but I'm guessing Schmidt will move into the starting line up, at least against Principia. Nick's a great kid who gives 100% at all times.

Always a good story to see kids come off the bench and contribute to a team's success.

As I stated on this board many times last season, I am no fan of multiple substitutions. A rotation of 8-9 players is what most coaches feel will work and bring the very best out of a team, individually and collectively.

Hey Mac Attack, can I expect to see you at the GC/MC Game?

Mac Attack

PantherPride picking MacMurray to drop two of three this week. Hmmmmm....
No doubt about it. Another big week for the Highlanders. Obviously a 3-0 week would be what the doctor ordered. But with injuries to some key players, that may be more than we could expect. I think MC and GC will match up real well. GC blasted Mac last year in Greenville, while Mac grabbed the W in Jacksonville. But this is a MUCH different MacMurray team from a year ago. If Greene and Robertson are healed up and ready to go next Friday night, it should be a barnburner. Then Mac has to turn around and travel to Fontbonne the next day. Who was drinking what when that schedule was put together?

Pride, not sure I can make it down. Depends on my work schedule. If so, I'll try to say hello. I assume you'll be the guy with Logan Chiropractic School shirt and the St. Louis College of Pharmacy hat on!

Oh Mac  :o, That's a low blow.
I'm glad to see both you and Pride are enjoying the ride. And, You should. Speaking from experience I can tell you that they don't come around real often.
