Greek Tragedy

Not quite the over, but that happens when you foul out in 19 minutes. Davidson didn't fair too well either, fouling out in 24, yet they were still close at the end.

Principia is better than I thought.  That's it.

Game inside the game... it looks like the first half T on TG is not showing in the box score.  The play was a scrum under the Prin basket following a TG drive.  Something happened. ??? IWU shoots two ft's with an empty lane.  House announcer says TGs name and something I couldn't fully understand which sounds like technical foul.  Hopefully it's not and the box is correct, but it would be great to hear from someone who was at the game.

Last night's game is precisely why I love SLIAC hoops.... two teams who will not be in the running for a conference tourney spot, who will win few if any non conference D3 games... but when conference games start, BANG... two evenly matched teams play their hearts out and provide totally entertaining basketball...
Prin fell behind double digits and had a fantastic comeback, cutting Iowa Wesleyan's lead to 0ne or two... but pretty much as GU and I alluded to pregame, depth was critical in the last 5 minutes, and IWU pulls it out in the last 5 minutes.
A huge number of good points:
IWU Marvin Saintolien... I finally went to the IWU roster to see who no 5 was... it was him...a career night with 18 points and 6 rebounds... that's more points than he had for the full year in either of two seasons at Webster... He comes north from Miami Fla, can't crack the lineup at Webster, and transfers even further north, to one of the smallest schools in D3, presumably to find a chance to play hoops.... and he got it....I have great admiration for this kid

Prin's AJ Byrd.. a frosh (yes TG's brother)... prior to tonight had shown enormous potential, but played pretty much like a freshman with bad shots... but with TG being MIA most of the night, AJ took over..28 point, 5 Assists, but unfortunately 6 turnovers...he clearly was the guy who set up just about everything Prin got on offense..

Prin's Payton Sellers... As a frosh two years ago, he showed potential to be a high level SLIAC player... then DNP for personal reasons last year... he's returned, has been very rusty... but the rust is wearing off, 20 pts, 6 rebs, 3 steals last night

Iowa Wez depth... well, depth equated to using primary 7 men, but the two who didn't start , Santolien and Austin Banks, both had double figure points...

Good to see Ryan Scott is becoming a SLIAC advocate, even if it's only to track Technical fouls ;D ;D ;D...   I really do respect Ryan's contributions to D3hoops.com as he was the member of the staff that supported my investigation of the mysterious Ohio Midwestern team that continued to be scheduled by Bluffton, even though the school had ceased to exist... and his article about the SLIAC sportsmanship rules was outstanding (though a little slow in coming out).

Could the foul in question against Goodman have been a flagrant foul? Those FTs are also taken with an empty lane. In the box score there is a technical foul assessed to Principia as a team. Maybe that's what was called.

GU1999

Goodman was the one shooting, so a flagrant on the offensive player would have been very odd.  The T v. IWU was later in the game when a Cresswell made a hook shot to go up 10 with four or five minutes to play and he did a muscle flex at the player he hit the hook shot over.  Interestingly, a T is now showing in the box score for Principia.  It is called a "team" technical.  This is an interesting distinction as this would be TG's 3rd of the season which is half way to a personal suspension.

3 games tonight... a brief look

Westminster at Greenville.... most of the Westmin players have not experienced the system... I don't expect this one to be close... GU by as much as Coach Barber allows it to be

Eureka at Blackburn.... nope, not a believer in Blackburn yet.... Eureka by a lot despite the travel....

Fontbonne at MacMurray... I would think that many would favor Fontbonne in this one.. Fontbonne had a good close loss to Simpson... Mac had a close loss to Monmouth... I don't care about the Lincoln Christian comparison...   I have more confidence in Mac Coaching than Fontbonne coaching in a close matchup...But darn, Fontbonne has better players up and down the lineup... Fontbonne should win, but likely by less than 10..

Do we have a SLIAC Team Technical Update?

In light of the SLIAC Sportsmanship Policy and the severe penalties associated with violation of the 14 technical limit, I will attempt to keep a record of the seasons technical fouls (team and player).

Season totals (as of 12/3/2019):

Greenville - 4 Ts (.66 T's per game):
S. Grady - flopping T,
A Contrearas - flopping T,
RaKim Murphy - flopping T,
J. Cross - hanging on the rim T)

Fontbonne 3 Ts (.6 T's per game):
CJ Purcell
Dominic Doolin
Caden Clark

Iowa Wesleyan - 3 T's (.5 T's per game)
Cresswell - 2
Team - 1

Principia - 3 Ts (.5 T's per game)
Goodman - 2
Team - 1

MacMurry - 2 T's: (.5 T's per game)
Ian Smith
Tanner Payton

Blackburn 1T: (.25 T's per game)
Karson Hayes

Spaulding 1 T: (.2 T's per game)
Brian Tribble

Westminster - 1 (.16 T's per game)
Spriggs

Currently, Greenville and Fontbonne are the only teams pacing to be excluded from the tournament as they are averaging .66 and .6 T's per game which is above the .56 T's per game threshold.  IWU, Prin and MAC are hanging right on the edge of the rule.  Of course, GU does not have any "Class A Unsporting Technical Infractions" only "Class B Technical Infractions".  But due to the imprecise language of the rule in general, which only says "technical fouls" it is possible that the SLIAC could consider Class B Technical Infractions to violative of the standard, and thereby I have included them in this report.  Of course, I hope that this is not the case.  Anyone who has watched GU play this year would likely acknowledge that they are playing the game the right way and that Coach Barber is on his best behavior.

Additionally, Principia's Goodman and IWU's Cresswell are individually pacing for game suspension punishment(s) on personal aggregated Ts.

I am being sincere... After first I thought it was crazy, for lack of a better word, to keep a running total, but this is providing a great story and good content.  Keep it up.

Games on December 4, 2019

Westminster @ Greenville - GU - 29.5

Greenville rolls in their first home game of the season.  Grinnell beat Westminster by 45 last week despite taking the press off for the last few minutes.  Interesting notes from that game include Grinnell out rebounding Westminster (a HUGE oddity in a system game) and Westminster taking 14 3's which is a lot against a system team.   Westminster also turned it over 35 times.  A recipe for a very lopsided outcome.   This one could get that out of hand, but I suspect that Coach Barber plays it similarly in the waning moments and keep it near the 29.5.

Fontbonne @ Mac - Mac - 3

This game is a toss up, but I'm giving Mac the edge for home court advantage.

Eureka @ Blackburn - Eureka -3.5
The World Famous Beverdome is not an easy place to play so I am giving Blackburn a better shot than they deserve on paper.

And while Eureka is clearly the better team on paper, this one could be interesting for a couple of reasons:
- extra adrenaline to start a conf season,
- tiny, albeit world famous, gym,
- good/loud crowd
- lots of dribble attacks and subsequent contact
- athletic kids playing uptempo

I think that this comes down to the final few possessions, but Eureka pulls it out.

i suspect ec has too much offensive firepower for this iteration of the beavers.  i predict a relatively easy double digit victory, even in that breadbox gym.

Someone will need to double check - I don't believe flopping Ts count for individuals - at least according to the NCAA.  It's more like a delay of game issue.  I don't know how the SLIAC will handle it.

I have it from a reliable source that the SLIAC commissioner has communicated that class B technicals will not count towards SLIAC sportsmanship policy threshold.
