I agree with you all.. the age of my laptop (ancient at 5 years old?) and the wifi service received are likely the major cause of my problems with the Greenville game... still the Eureka feeds from Tuesday night and the Illinois College game (vs Eureka) last night presented no problems at all...  I'll keep pluggin' away!!!!

I suspect the YouTube options might be offering slow enough feeds that you can see them - I'm guessing a bit.

I know YouTube offers almost every version under the sun ... while other providers might stop at 360 or 480 and nothing lower. The reason being: for every one stream, a provider has to provide the number of streams per viewing option. So if there is a 1080 broadcast, YouTube might offer 1080, 720, 480, 360, 240 (roughly). That's five for one. Others, to save space on servers and demand and such, might only offer the 1080, 720, and 480 of that broadcast. If you are slow enough (for a variety of reasons) and can't get the 480 to work from someone not offering lower than that... then the stream will be problematic.

And it goes both ways for the school. YouTube might be free, but to provide all those speeds for the end user, the schools have to send a larger data package to YouTube. Normally this isn't a big deal, but it can be problematic from time to time depending a number of factors. At the same time, there is absolutely no customer service available to troubleshoot problems with the stream - though there is a live, automatic display providing information about the stream and if YouTube is sensing issues.

The for-pay services like BlueFrame Technology, College TV Ticket, and others, only need a smaller data package as their systems won't be needing as much to create the alternate streams. They also have customer service available at all times to help troubleshoot and much more. And again, they are a paid service... and sometimes you get what you pay for.

The folks who are doing the Greenville broadcasts are a group of sports announcers that are more interested in calling games than using the latest technology, if I understand the business correctly.  They have been calling local high school games for years.

Why do schools with small audiences use a pay service rather than streaming on YouTube?

Many SIDs know where I stand on things ... that the video shouldn't be PPV because of the amount of reach to parents, alumni, and recruits in any normal year. I get that these things cost money, but there are a lot of ways to get that returned via making it something the entire university is involved in from an educational perspective, to the fact the overall cost is a drop in the bucket for most institutions (especially with the return opportunities), or alumni donations and involvement, and even using advertising and such.

But ... I'm not usually paid for my consulting, sadly (as much as I've tried) and many don't want to actually listen (higher ups, not SIDs - they tend to listen and want to implement ideas).

This is really an informative thread for a total novice who really just enjoys the freedom to the games on my TV in Chicago.  I will report no glitchs other than the return from half issue that was discussed during the broadcast for the GU/WU game.  The steam from GU on Wednesday was the most complete non-playoff SLIAC basketball game stream I have watched.

Specific new additions:
- screen graphic which showed the score accuratly, timeouts remaining, and a video feed of the scoreboard clock
- Use of multiple camera angles
- In game replays
- Halftime and end of game stat breakdown graphics
- I got a kick out of the GU student experience spotlights during down times.  It appeared that they were potentially shot by students and really had a cool feel to them.
- The student broadcasters also did a very nice job.

GU - Just well done all around.  Huge upgrade from last year.  It was noticed.

Lastly, I know that the above is standard for many leagues.  I see this with regularity in the CCIW.  Their Sidearm Sports (lierfield) presentations are even more polished and include all of the above and more.  And the student broadcasters, even when they are really good like the two that did Wednesdays game, will still be lacking when compared to old pros like Gregory at North Park.

Sometimes the streaming comes integrated into other software - like stats packages, etc.

Most amusing thing to me and my problems with the Greenville stream was it kept taking me backwards at random times... the score would be 39-31 and flash... it now is 29-20... 3 different times it took me all the way back to warmups!!!!   Fortunately I could manually move it back to current time!!!! ::) ::)

Three games tomorrow.

Each game begins at 4:00 pm.

They could have easily staggered the games by an hour.

Given that you and I are the only fans likely interested in tuning in to multiple games, I'd venture to say our interests were not taken into account by the SLIAC schedulers... ;D ;D ;D ;D

In the past we have had things better during midweek games.... With Prin playing on Tuesdays, regular scheduling on Wednesday, and Spalding playing Thursday when on the road, we could sometimes watch games 3 nights in a row, Wash U on Friday, SLIAC Saturday, Wash U Sunday,  and finally get a day off on Monday..... D3hoops heaven!!!

Those were the days.  Maybe next season.  By the way, those games begin at 3:00 CST rather than 4:00 for anyone who happens to look here.

Fontbonne vs Webster tonight.. anxious to watch on the internet... will Yjack or wupiffff try to sneak in to give us LIVE reports?

Another Spalding postponement tonight, plus game this weekend already postponed.... Covid protocol, or other problems?... that's 4 for 4 Spalding conference games gone...  Will they play at all?

I do think one could sneak in to the Fontbonne gym for a while.

Hang out by the food court maybe.

Time to open up the gym to parents and season ticket holders (it could be a thing).

I only watched parts of the game on Saturday, but Westminster looks good to me.  Turnover city, but otherwise...  It is remarkable just how many minutes were played by transfer students.

So last night was pretty wild.  And wild in the SLIAC is already the standard.  Last night stands out.

Iowa Wesleyan - 77
Westminster - 71

Huge upset at IWU.  Westminster looked to be the top team in the league after pulling away from Fontbonne in the second half last weeks conference opener for both teams.   IWU came into this game after getting smoked by 20 in their first game by Blackburn.  IWU took a 14 point lead in the first half and fended off the Bluejays in the second never relinquishing their lead.  Jarryd Fernandes was the headliner for IWU with 15 points and 16 boards.

Funny Bone - 88
Webster - 51

This seemingly historic loss forced me to pull up the available WU record books.  I needed to know when WU had lost this badly before, if ever.  Turns out that the reasonably available game scores only go back to the 99-00 season.  It also turns out that this is not the worst loss WU has had during that time.  On November 23, 2004 Webster lost to Eastern Kentucky by 55 (102 - 47).  This is wholly understandable given the vast gap between d3 and d1.  Webster also lost to Wash U by 42 on January 5, 2003 (a loss avenged later that year when Webster beat WashU 80 - 70).  However, Webster has not lost a conference game by 37 points since at least the 99-00 season.

Fontbonne has a huge performance swing after losing last week to Eureka.

Eureka 74
Blackburn 57

Eureka bounced back from losing to Cornell by 25 on Monday to beat Blackburn by 17.
Blackburn fell flat losing by 17 after beating IWU by 20 on Saturday.

The SLIAC is a historically unpredictable league.  If current swings in performance are any indicator, this may be the most unpredictable year ever.

A quick shot out to 7-0 Westminster volleyball who cracked AVCA women's rankings...

Thanks for the update from last night.

GU1999

AVCA women's volleyball rankings are very SLIAC heavy:

Westminster (7-0) at #10
Greenville (7-1) at #15
Webster (4-2) at #22
