My enthusiasm for SLIAC hoops has gone back up to overdrive after watching PC at GU last night....
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

GU1999

Great win for Prin.  In a league which is wide open, road wins will be very important.

My main take away regarding my panthers is that GU needs to get healthy if they are going to compete.  Three of the top-10 didn't play last night.  I'm guessing its COVID or some related illness.  There were times last night where the b and c shifts looked gassed.  Depth is really important and we need these guys back.  One player that hasn't played in a bit is the Greek kid Dermisis.  I saw him play in Kenosha against Carthage and was encouraged that he would be a good contributor.  I do wonder about his status with the team.

The three GU needs back to compete in this league:
- LJ Lampley, the kid who hit the game winner against North Park.  He has size and is a shooting threat.
- Everett Campbell, a top 5 scorer, who is a difference maker athletically
- Chris Jackson, a vet of the System

That said, I was impressed with Grant McCullagh last night.  I hadn't seen him play much and he finished well around the rim.  He is a 3rd year guy, who has largely been JV.  His father was a stud at GU in the mid-90s.  Grant's father Matt was a starter on a GU team that won the league in its first year in 1995/6.  Matt had a notoriously good game that year against a former league team called Parks (now part of SLU).  He went for 49 points on 11 for 15 from 3.  Great shooter and a great guy.  It was nice to see Grand get some run and play well.

I was planning to go to Webster vs Fontbonne tonight but Covid.  Both games!  Surely at this rate, everyone will have had Covid in the next week or so (typed tongue in cheek).

I found out a couple of interesting facts about how SLIAC Basketball will deal with Covid Conference game cancellations by communicating with SLIAC admin as well as with one of the SLIAC schools..

1)  When a game is cancelled due to Covid  (already Webster-Fontbonne), no makeup game will be played as a conference game.  Both teams will have a no result for that non-game in the publicized conference standings.   However, if the schools agree to play a makeup game, they may play, but it will not count in the conference standings.

2)  However, there will be a second set of standings (not sure if they will be public), that will give a "point" for the non covid team, and no point for the covid team... each real win and covid cancellation win gets a point... those points will determine final standings for conference tourney positioning...   I like this methodology, because a team that misses several games due to covid will not be humiliated with a public record showing losses that did not occur on the court, but will not be rewarded for causing cancellations in the tourney determining standings...

Of course, hopefan, with his wry sense of humor, came up with an amusing situation... what if BOTH teams have a covid situation.... hopefan was told that the first team reporting the situation gets the loss... can readers imagine one school saying "Don't report yet, our spies say the other team has a covid problem".. and the other school doing the same... it would be a big game of chicken leading up to game time!!! ;D ;D ;D :o :o :o

Perfect! This is a good substitute for an actual game, seeing as how it extends the spirit of competition between schools.

I've just been informed by SLIAC admin (thank you admin) that there has been a change... the following statement was sent to me..

"ADs are now allowing 2 postponements per team before adjusting conference standings."

I'm not up for writing a hypothetical meaning of this...I'll try to get an explanation...

Throw out the first set of Covid rules I posted.... nobody is quite sure how to interpret various scenarios, it may be figure it out as the season progresses...there will be numerous cancellations this week, the virus is running rampant.  HOWEVER, it seems it is hoped that this is the peak, and that most if not all games can be rescheduled prior to conference tourney....

a very unfortunate situation... so many variables...and no one wants to endanger the kids....

Principia defeated Westminster on one of the more unlikely buzzer beater shots I have seen.  I hope it gets out on Twitter as it was definitely Sports Center worthy...

Kinda off balance, kinda no look, running over half court.... to win at the buzzer for Prin.... incredible....

And Prin did it without their 2nd leading scorer Payton Sellers....

I find it so hard not to root for Prin.. they've been down for so long.... I loved going up to Elsah for Prin games....a beautiful ride, a beautiful campus...
