Quite a large Webster roster. https://websterathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster?sort=class

New players include thirteen freshmen, one sophomore transfer from Millikin, one junior transfer from SE Illinois CC, and one grad student transfer from Hannibal-LaGrange via Indonesia. Those sixteen go with eleven returning players -- three sophomores, three juniors, five seniors.

Booker Simmons wasn't a member of the Millikin basketball team. He was a backup quarterback on last year's Big Blue football team as a freshman. He thus has four years of basketball eligibility remaining.

^^^ So if he didn't play basketball at Millikin does that imply he wasn't recruited for basketball, or he was recruited for both football and basketball and chose football? In any case, football isn't an option at Webster.

Gregory Sager

I'm not implying anything. I have no idea which sports he was or was not recruited to play for Millikin. I'm simply reporting the facts.

^^^ Sorry. "Imply" was probably a poor choice of words, and I didn't mean that you were the one doing the "implying". I was just curious what you might know. Thanks for the reply. Hope he has a great hoops career at Webster.

Gregory Sager

Me, too. I'm just familiar enough with all of the CCIW men's basketball rosters to know that I didn't recognize Simmons's name from Millikin. (My recognition level with CCIW football rosters is far lower, for obvious reasons.)

Hello All,

While I will be following from afar WashU's efforts against North Central, it won't be idle following.

I will be in the midst of my Rett Gets Rocked 2023 24-hour ultramarathon at WashU to raise awareness of Rett syndrome and research funds to find a cure.  I'm starting around 8:00 Friday night (after I provide the call for the WashU-Saint Louis U. swimming and diving meet), and ending at 8:00 Saturday night.

Rett syndrome is a neurological disorder caused by a gene mutation on the X chromosome.  It lays in the weeds until a child is between 6-18 months old, just when a child is learning to walk and talk.  Rett is like Lucy in the Peanuts comic strip when she pulls the ball away from Charlie Brown, as he tries to kick it.  Unlike Charlie Brown...when Rett pulls the ball away from children, they don't get a chance to get up and try again.  Children go into severe neurological regression; many end up in wheelchairs and most lose the ability to talk and to do sign language.  Those with Rett also are prone to seizures, extreme nerve pain, GI issues, breathing abnormalities, and eating difficulties that can all be life-threatening.

Researchers are relentless, providing hope on two fronts.  Back in March of this year, Daybue became the first FDA-approved drug to target the effects of Rett syndrome.  Daybue helps blunt some of the seizures and has helped improve some vocal and gross motor skills.  Gene replacement therapy clinical trials in two North American locations have helped one patient sit up independently for the first time in a decade, and to grasp objects for the first time since infancy.

It is this momentum of hope and progress that I am trying to assist and perpetuate.

The families of children who have Rett and fight a tough fight every day, will be very grateful for your help.

Thank you for your time and consideration, and enjoy the games this weekend!

The Webster outcome is probably the most encouraging. Illinois College is favored in the MWC.

I watched a bit of that game, kind of in and out throughout the game, so didn't get a good feel for the flow. Plus the live stream wasn't the crispest -- was a bit blurry. I think IC had a good bit of size on Webster, which is borne out by the box score. IC was 27 of 43 on it's two point shooting and I did see them score quite a few buckets in the post. They also out rebounded Webster 54-32, with 42 of those being defensive off 47 shots missed by Webster, who only shot 30% for the game.

The SLIAC has given an all-sports trophy 98/99 season.  Today they announces that they have revamped the scoring structure.  The old structure was very odd in that it dramatically over valued performance in the sports where there were affiliate members, like golf.

From the release today, "The newly revamped scoring formula for the All-Sports trophy is based on scoring average for conference based sports sponsored by institutions. Each team is assigned points based on their order of finish in the standings (except for team sports such as cross country and golf, which is determined by order of finish at the conference championship). That point total is then divided by the number of SLIAC sponsored sports offered by the institution, resulting in a team score. Point totals only factor in core SLIAC institutions."

This is a good update.
