The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

When I read the paragraph in MacAttack's post about the final play in yesterday's Mac-Webster game I was concerned about how that reflected on Webster. Today I spoke, in person, to someone in attendance who I consider to be a reliably impartial observer. That person's recollection of that play was that Mac had not pulled back their defense and that the lay-up was missed because it was contested by a Mac player, and that the dunk was a natural reaction to the play. Perhaps it would have been better to just let the ball fall to the floor. But kids are coached to play hard until the end and if Mac was in defensive mode, then what happened isn't so surprising. I wasn't there, so I don't know. I share this in the interest of balanced reporting.

I would love to have everyone here in Eureka, but I'm not about to start making preparations. It seems Pantherpride put the jinx on his squad when he started talking about the tourney in Greenville. I've told the softball/baseball coaches to leave that Fri/Sat night open for now in the gym. That's all the arrangements I've made so far. We've got a long way to go, folks.

I'm glad you've set up the info exchange, hopefan.  Our coaches/players/families were very happy to have quick updates from other games. It stinks that I can't get my phone to work in the gym. I may have to have someone else call for me for more frequent updates later this season since I'm on the stat crew and can't leave.

Y_Jack -- I too talked to an individual whom I consider to be a reliable source and I was also informed that the play you detailed in your post was right on!  Assuming the play to be true as we have heard, I also could not agree more with your post.  Perhaps, it would have been best to allow the ball to drop to the floor, but like you metioned, kids are instructed to go hard all the time and if it was in fact a contested missed lay-up that led to the follow up dunk, it is hard to be angry about the situation.  Players will react naturally and instincts take over and that is to finish the play.  So, it appears, that the same play has 2 tales to the story!  Its is said and done now and if MacMurray can use that incident to fuel them in a potential tourney match-up, then so be it...perhaps, it is even good coaching!

I would have to lean to the side of the last two posts. In this conference it is pretty much a given. Teams that are up and not being guard will let the clock expire. If the defense isn't willing to let the clock expire then a dunk is a pretty high percentage shot.

You dont see the dunk too often in the SLIAC so Id say that if it was in the tempo of the game and Mac was still playing, by all means the kid should have dunked it, high percentage is right fc.  Also getting the crowd excited by a dunk and putting an exclamation mark on the victory can help in the mental aspect of the game in case these teams meet again.

Mac Attack

For what it's worth, MacMurray had called off the dogs. They had one kid at half court and Webster threw the ball over his head. The Mac player followed the ball but didn't contest the shot. The lay-up was missed and the dunk followed. I guess my question is why would Webster, with a 10 point lead with five seconds left to play, throw a full court pass for lay-up? You just don't do that. As far as the "natural reaction" to follow the miss with a dunk is a head scratcher too. The game was over and most of the MacMurray players were headed to the sidelines to shake hands. And following the dunk, a couple dozen Webster fans flooded out onto the court and high-fived their players. Acted like they had just won the NCAA championship. The Webster coach didn't like it and he pulled his players away. Maybe this is OK sportsmanship with some folks, but it left a very bad taste in the mouths of the MacMurray players, coaches, and fans.

Time to move on.

It appears we will have a good time no matter were the tourney is held. I just want to find a way for the Grif's to be playing. Heck, we can play it at the local YMCA, I don't care.

Three big games this week:

Tuesday - GC @ FU

Thursday - WC @ WU

Saturday - Mac @ WC

Levi, from Guston, KY, decided it was better to go back home and work than stay in school and play ball.  He's actually from just south of where I live in Indiana.  Guston is just across the river from Corydon, IN (Off of I-64).

Levi had a ton of potential and brought alot to the team.  He has been missed.

As for your program FCNews, click this link to get a PDF of Saturday's program. I thought about updating this for you and putting FU's rosters and all on there.  I still may.  But for now here it is..

and for anyone elses viewing pleasure if you'd like.  It's our game day program which I designed and have put out each of the last 3 yrs.  GC never had one before.

MacAttack, thanks for that more detailed explanation. I concur with your point. Time to move on, indeed.
