Bunch WU 69 MU 66

And Bunch and Daryl are correct the conference only stats are used by coaches in ballotting.

Daryl L Lloyd

Bunchtime: I concur, we both know stats do not tell the whole story.  And I would love to see spinner win the award (his stats are not to shabby either though).

MacAttack: You are right, in a perfect would you could have both.  I fortunately have the luxury of not having to split hairs and pick either one because that is beside the point (who wouldnt take the more complete player???).  I was asserting my opinion that Hoggatt derserves 1st team consideration thus far, as much as anyone else mentioned, not who I would rather have.  And as I said Im sure Webster is happy with 20 and 7 from a guy who only avg 24 min a game, regardless of what Robertson does.

The Gorloks barely got by the Saints!  I had a feeling this one would be closer than predicted.  Maryville can be tough at home and it is not the friendliest place for a shooter.  The W is all that counts.  The Tourney picture will began to clear up in the weeks ahead.

And Daryl...I agree about Hoggat recieving first team consideration.  I am afraid though that coaches will place him on the 2nd team because of the aforementioned reasons I have listed.  I hope I am wrong..it would be disappointing!  It is always tough to get 2 kids from the same school on the 1st team; however, it has been done!

Thanks for info FC on the coaches votes...I thought that was the criteria they used to determine conference awards!

Some crazy games tonight.  Im interested to hear what happened between BC and EC.  MU almost got one tonight, I was pulling for them but WU is clearly the better team.  Looks like GC might just make a prophet out of me.  Sorry Pride.  I havent seem them yet this year but I still dont think they have what it takes, could be that lack of inside presence mentioned earlier; and with BC losing tonight you'd have to think they're pretty close to out too.  Man it would have been real nice to see BC and MU get a couple of huge wins tonight to keep this thing knotted up in a way the sliac has probably never seen before.  That would have kept eight teams in it with a chance to still make the tournament.  I guess if FC was correct about only taking 11 wins to get in Maryville, who is in eighth at 4-7 would still have a chance to win out and make it in.  Don't see that happening, but who saw the Cards winning it all right?  Well Thursday will be huge and I'm sure there will be a lot to talk about until then and after those games!  Good luck Sliac teams!

SLIAC Player

Hoggatt is hands down the best player in the conference.

Couple things on my mind.  I was in attendance for the GC/FU game.  It was a no contest.  Greenville simply turned the ball over too many times and fouled needlessly.

Compare & Contrast Free Throws ... ver. 2

Greenville: 4-11 , Blackburn 24-28 (Blackburn +20).  Final Score Blackburn by 4
Greenville: 9-28, Westminster 34-44 (Wesmin +25). Final Score Westminster by 8

If we quit fouling so much, we win games.  There is 45 points given up at the FT line in the last two games and it was the same tonight v. Fontbonne.  I'm not blaming the officials either folks.  I'm saying my team is just fouling uncontrobably.  That, Turnovers, and pour shots/not taking your shots/missing bunny's is killing us.

I hate calling out kids out on here.  But, for sake of tonight's game I will.  Taylor needs to keep going to the hole and draw the foul & hit the lay up.  He has done that for the last 2 yrs and been successful and didn't do that tonight.  He keeps looking to pass out to someone.  Make the lay-up.  Conquest did have 18? tonight but should have had 24.  He had three missed clear layups.  All three he was looking for style points and not just the two that belongs on the board.  In general, Simmons & Hensold have shyed away when it come to PPG & FG%.  Hensold may be the best shooter in the league hands down and no one sees him because he's a quiet kid.  But, has been off lately.

**Note: GC players reading this.  Don't take offense.  This is my view from the FU game.  I love you fellas and am looking for ways to help us win!!! :) **

Secondly:

As much as the Greenville/Fontbonne rivialry has caused a few temper issues between people, the relationship the two programs have is outstanding.  We have prayed with and for Coach McKinney with his cancer, his grandson, and now his arm/sholder.  There is so much beyond the hardwood.  I met Mrs. McKinney tonight.  What a wonderful women. Very kind.  Not only did I meet her, I met the president of the college (im sure that who it was or who Mrs. McKinney said it was... didnt match up to the website).  Wow.  Another wonderful woman who complimented a buddy of mine and myself for our energy during the women's game.  Just great people at Fontbonne University from the basketball office up to the head women in charge.

Finally:

What a great game for the Lady Panthers.  I know they have a board and I will post there too.  It's been a while and it was a big game for the girls.

Eureka 81, Blackburn 76

Beaver SID (nice to meet you and thanks for the stats, by the way) and I were treated to a great game tonight at the Beaver Dome. Tarpley and Hammond were a ton for their respective sides. But both teams in general played great. How often can a team say it went on the road, see the home team shoot 13-24 from 3-point land, and still come away on top? Not often, my friends. Needless to say, Eureka escaped with one tonight. I'm not saying they didn't earn it, just that one of these teams had to lose and somehow it was Blackburn.  Both teams were making their open shots and combined for just 15 turnovers. It was a great game to watch.

Beavers led by 10 in the 1st half, but EC went on a 17-4 run to take the lead. It didn't last long as BC came right back and led by 3 at halftime.  Eureka rallied to take a 1 point lead, but it looked like it would be the Beavers' night when they roared out to a 62-54 lead with 12 minutes to go. Clutch shots were hit by Mark Darnall with a three, Michael Zasada with a 3-point play and then Darnall added 2 free throws to tie at 76 with 1:28 left.

Tarpley moved EC in front with 52 sec. left.  Hammond missed several shots in the last minute plus. He was guarded, but it was still surprising to see him miss after how hot he started the game. Tarpley hit just enough free throws late to give EC some breathing room. He ended up with 32. Eureka hardly led at all in the 2nd half, but did so at the right time.

Next up is Lincoln Christian Thursday. This is a team that gave EC fits earlier, so they are not to be taken lightly. There is still a long way to go. I wouldn't count the Beavers out just yet. There is no one left on their schedule they cannot beat. An upset or 2 elsewhere, at win at Fontbonne Saturday, and the BC couild be right back in it.

Beaver_SID

Eureka_SID,

Glad to meet ya and what a game it was. Tarpley has my vote for POTY. This kid has great size, strength, speed, shooting. He pounded it inside all the first half then takes the initiative to go from behind the arch to rally his team back into it. Every shot Tarpley took seemed to have a magnet on it as it found the bottom of the hoop a lot when it counted. I think If EC could find another man for a 3-man rotation between Tarpley and Richard EC could be pretty dominant in the SLIAC. I was wondering why they subed in for each other, but hey big guys need a break. Both seem like good athletes. Maybe #3, dont know his name, could fill that spot and give you guys a lil time on the floor with both of them out at the same time. They seemed to work great together at the beginning of the game. Ill post stats later today, I left them in the office.

Good to see all the Posters at last nites FU v. GC battle. Enjoy the Pizza!!!! Yes Pride that was Dr. and Mrs. Golden.

Another big night from FU's Fogerty. 30 pts. (12-16, 1-1, 5-5), 13 rebounds.
The Sliac's "Rodman" Storandt had a workman like 12 pts., 10 rebs., and 5 blocks

Stat of the night - Only had two players that played 30 minutes. Storandt and McCoy each played 31.

Newcommers Dill, Lovette and Bader earned marks last night. Zach Dill log 15 minutes going 1-1 from three's and 9-9 from the line. Nice to have another guard who can hit free throws down the stretch.

The Grif's go to 7-2 in '07. The last two wins coming on nites when they didn't play their best. But, winners have to win some ugly.

A couple of games of interest tomorrow night but the big one being Webster and Wesminster.  Should be a good game.  Also, a must win for Greenville tomorrow night  against Maryville.  I am going to predict the upset -- Maryville over Greenville.  Sorry Pride, but the Panthers have not been playing well of late.  Though it should be a good game.  Looks like Webster, Eureka, and Mac are beginning to emerge as locks for the tourney, although it is still premature to say.  The fourth spot seems wide open with 3 teams vying for that spot!  Best time of the year in hoops -- February on!

Man, I know that everybody must be wondering what in the world is going on with the Greenville Men's basketball team. Opinions are scattered everywhere, ranging from lack of talent, inside prescence, and costly turnovers. An inside source close to the panthers thoughs sounds like they have the real reason. Although Greenville started off well with a 6-0 conference mark, they have since slipped to 6-5. This source believes that the main reason for the struggles could be that the Panthers' style has not changed since early this season while other teams have made all the proper adjustments. Some positives that I do see are exceptional freshman forward La'Phonso Ellis and sophomore guard Antonio Conquest. They can't do it themselves though. The supporting cast must step up and fill their necessary roles in order for the panthers to get back on track.  Hopefully the coach can figure out how to get them to do that before the door is shut on this season.

Just a quick note on last night's WU-MU game. Webster had an 11 point lead with 2:12 to go. Maryville began to employ the "foul them to stop the clock and make them beat us with free throws" strategy. It nearly worked as Webster missed a number of FTs, then Maryville made buckets on ensuing possessions because Webster was playing conservative defense so as not to foul. It will not surprise me if BunchTime's prediction of a Maryville win over Greenville comes true.

Mac Attack

Some MacMurray stats from last night's 90-70 win over LCC:

Jerel Robertson: 10-18 FG, 20 pts, 6 reb, 4 stls, 30 minutes
Brady Greene: 5-9 FG, 5-6 FT, 15 pts, 7 reb, 2 asst, 4 stls, 27 minutes
Seth Whalum: 5-8 FG, 4-4 FT, 15 pts, 5 reb, 3 asst, 4 stls, 27 minutes
Farrid Coleman: 12 pts, 7 asst, 3 stls, 29 minutes
Neil Compton: 9 pts, 8 reb, 4 asst

Pretty balanced effort from the Highlander's starting five. Also got 19 points and great effort from the bench. They share the ball, help each other out on defense, and don't care who gets the credit. Not a bad forrmula.

In the interest of letting our readers know what I see when I go to games, I have to report that a minor problem surfaced at Fontbonne last night.  Trevor White did not see any court time last night in the 2nd half.  Inside sources (including a teammate) conveyed to me that Trevor took exception to coaching rendered his way during halftime and basically disrespected the coach.  For that, he earned himself a seat on the bench to think about it during the 2nd half.

Cudos to the Fontbonne staff for attempting to teach this young man a lesson.  He is a potential first team all conference player and is clearly the difference between the griffs being a 500 team and being a contender for the league championship.  Let's hope Trevor comes back this weekend a wiser young man and a better teammate.   He has the potential to help Fontbonne be a dominant team in the conference the next several years - Don't Blow it!

With that being said, I say thanks to FCnews and Coach for providing pizza to celebrate the win over Greenville  -  I ate WAY TOO MUCH!  It was fun rubbing shoulders with the students and players, and chatting with Ms McKinney, who I find is an avid D3 hoops postups reader!

There really was some separation established last night with Eureka winning at Blackburn and Webster winning at Maryville.  These were both games that could have gone the other way.  Certainly at this point Webster, Eureka, and Mac are minimally in the drivers seat because they "control their own destiny".  And rooting interests may begin to change -  for instance, if I'm a Fontbonne fan, I think along the lines of hoping Webster beats Westminster, because rather than worry about catching Webster, I want to move ahead of Westminster for that 4th slot.

EVERY game is crucial  -  Greenville has to beat Maryville to stay alive - I don't think they will.....

Looking forward to Westminster at Webster tomorrow  -  how healthy is Westminster?

AND, strongly considering going west to see Mac @ Westminster on Saturday - a huge game for both no matter what happens on Thursday.
