I suspect Hettinga is betting that our government will continue to drag its feet on the problem of global warming and that the northern Michigan winters will be milder than hopefan describes.

hahahaha....

While that is a funny joke, I hate that Al Gore decided to use the popular term "Global Warming"... it just makes the issue simpler than it is.

So I'll I stick that all too often stated reminder that the correct term is "Global Climate Change" and that it characterized by unpredictable severe weather... So, northern Michigan could get warmer, or it could get much, much, colder and snowier... ouch.

I should probably leave this alone, or perhaps we could move it to another venue such as private messages, but I want to make a short response to diehardfan. While "Global Climate Change" may be the more accurate term, and "unpredictable severe weather" the overall result, the fact remains that the earth as a whole is getting warmer. Should it get colder and snowier in northern Michigan, that is a localized result. I don't think we're heading into another ice age. Quite the contrary.

you know - i gotta say it  -  Mac you and I had a great relationship during the season - I enjoyed having a Mac contact to hear about game results and to pass along results to you.   But often, any points that i pass along that don't fit your pro Mac agenda tend to be overlooked or evaded by your posts.  Such is the case again tonight.   Instead of a Seth is eligible because....., it's Seth is eligible end of story.

I'll ask YOU flat out  -  was Seth on the team in 20023-04, did he play in the game that i brought up?  If you have access to him, ask him.  All I want is a straight answer.  If he did, and proper channels say he's eligible anyway, that's great.  I just don't like being made to look like an idiot when i search out a point and it falls by the wayside with no explanation.   I was going to drop it, but your response of Seth is eligible end of story has spurred me on.

If I find an answer from another source, I'll pass it on.  If I was wrong I'll admit it.  If the play by play was in error, I'll let people know.  If I find I was making a mountain out of a molehill, i'll admit it.   But this is probably the best guard in the league we're talking about  -  I want to know the status      for real.

Hopefan, this may or may not help clarify things, but here's my hunch on the play-by-play issue:

I don't recall when you said the game in question was played, but I'm guessing it was an early season non-conference game? Anyway, it's possible Whalum's name was on the original roster Mac's SID sent out to their first couple of opponents at the start of the season. Then, for whatever reason, he may have quit the team or decided to take advantage of whatever "redshirt" rules were available at that time (if indeed there were any). With his name and number on the roster sent out, it's very easy for the stat crew during the game to punch in a wrong number. I have done this numerous times. That's why you'll see me with a sheet of paper in front of me at all games so I can write down the possible corrections that need to be made.   If someone ends up with stats that did not appear in the game (that is, the computer shows he had 0 minutes played), his name WILL appear on the boxscore. When this happens, I always check the play-by-play to figure out where the error was, but not everyone does this. Instead, you can just go into the boxscore stats and delete stats for a player. His name is then erased from the boxscore, but still appears in the play by play. Again, this is just a guess, but it's my best shot.

y_jak_lok, I think our recent football records speak volumes about how difficult it is to field a winning team with an enrollment around 500-700. Eureka has had some good teams in the past, but it's been since the mid 1990s. MacMurray, on the other hand, has had some very good squads recently with an enrollment below 1000. The key is to play a schedule with schools like you on it. Unfortunately, for next year at least, ours still includes Aurora, Concordia (WI), and Lakeland. We have a hard time competing with those schools in any sport, much less football. Still, there's few things better than football Saturdays in the fall (one of course would be the conference basketball tournament). I went to college at Western Ill. and I've worked at Eureka for two seasons. I've been to Notre Dame for football games multiple times. It doesn't matter what level you're talking about. There's a special buzz on a college campus on home football weekends that cannot be duplicated by schools without football. I'm glad Eureka has football. I wouldn't like my job as much if we didn't have a team.

Eureka Sid  thanks   -  that's the kind of practical explanation that I was looking for   -  if that is what happened, it would explain it.

hopefan - I have no idea if Seth played in the game(s) in question during the 2003-2004 season. I didn't follow the team at that time and would have no way of knowing. But knowing Seth the way I do, and knowing the administration at MacMurray the way I do, I don't think the player would be saying he was eligible to play next season if it wasn't true. There are still very qualified, knowledgeable people at MacMurray who can and do advise students-athletes on these issues. No one is relying on a secretary to steer the course, although I've known many secretaries who know more about the ins and outs of an office than most of the higher paid staff who works there.....

I would imagine when the new coach is hired, the announcement will be made about Whalum, if not sooner. We'll see.

Here is my question, when was the "redshirt" application sent in.  We have had numerous applications we have to send in to the SLIAC I believe and the NCAA and it takes 4+ weeks to get it back.  I'm just in and out since the season was over, but it seems like it's been a short stent since we began talking about this.

THE NEW AND IMPROVED HJ LONG GYMNASIUM::.

I'm not sure what your thoughts are on Greenville's HJ Long gymnasium when it comes to:
1. Basketball Atmosphere...
2. Crowd / Fans...
3. Enjoyable experience...
4. 1st Thoughts on the Gym...
5. Bleachers...

I'll stop there and let some of you like MacII, EurekaSID, Hope, and fc answer before I tell you what might be happening in HJ.

One of the things that I absolutely love about D3 hoops is some of the older smaller gyms you run in to.   Consequently, I'm one who enjoys the confines of gyms such as Westminster and Greenville  (while I love the atmosphere at Blackburn, especially when the crazies get goin', the bleachers are just TOO cramped).. My only complaint about Greenville, if I remember correctly, is that each bleacher row is incredibly "wobblely"  -  one must be careful especially when walking along one of the rows, that one doesn't end up in someone's lap.  Except for that, GC's gym is just fine with me!!!!    Not to damper however, there's always room for improvements.    Panther, any decisions yet on future plans?

Pride - In response to questions. Don't change a thing. GC is the best atmosphere in the SLIAC for a game (except maybe SLIAC Tourney Semi's this year). Maybe new bleachers, as Coach McKinney remarked to you this year, it looked like some new lighting. But, you said "New Bulbs". Bleachers at the ends would add seating and still keep the charm. The FU kids look forword to going to GC to play.

fcnews

Pride I know an SID position that's open. ;D

Also. if there is improvements, how about a thermostat in the visitors locker room. It would be nice to get the temp below triple digits.

The only question in my mind about Whalum's situation. I know Mac has tri - semesters. Could it be that he was an academic casualty?

Word Around MacMurray Campus is that Seth Whalum will be getting another year of eligibilty do to academic reasons from is freshman year, in which he did not paly a single varsity game.

This is my reference on the above question. What was the academic reasons?

hopefan

so fcnews, or anyone else  -  hypothetical  -  if a player in his frosh year does something - ie appears in 1 game - which by the rules completes his eligibility (one appearance constitutes a season of eligibility) after 3 more years of competition , does an opposing school make the commissioner's office aware of it?   OR, if a coaching staff was aware that a player on their own team was in that situation, do they render the player ineligible?  While the rule is extremely harsh, it is there - is it so harsh that opponents would overlook the situation to let the player play in a 5th year???

My personal opinion - rules are rules, and if the rules at that time said sorry, step foot on the court and it is eligbility, then that is the way it has to be to prevent a myriad of different situations (1 game, 3 games, injury, academics, financial, family issue etc) from creeping in.

FC, are you aware of any specific SLIAC rules regarding redshirt, or injury, justifying additional eligibility?

This has definitely happened.

Not sure what this does or doesn't mean, but this was on the NCAA official stats website has Seth Whalem not playing in any games during the 2003-2004 season. You can go to http://web1.ncaa.org/stats/StatsSrv/ranksummary and check it out.

Have a Blessed Easter.

Panther, I really like HJ Long Gym a lot. I like the wood ceiling and the closeness of the concessions. There seemed to be just the right amount of seating and the stands are close to the floor (unlike some gyms I know). I like the banners placed in the first row as well (I would rather see fans sitting there of course, but rules are rules, like Hopefan says). Our women's BKB coach said that the rims were tight there and that it was a little dark, but I didn't notice it being that way at all. At least not this year. Many of our players like playing there as well. I've only been there once, so I'm sure there's some things I didn't catch, but I would have a hard time coming up with something to change other than Pantherpride's presence when I make my yearly visit.

Hopefan - Sliac medical redshirts are submitted to the Commish and are his sole decision. On the Seth Whalum situation, I will not voice any official type answer. I will mention some thoughts. In the past, if you appeared in an official score book for a varsity or JV contest representng your instiution, you have used your year. You don't have to score just appear. I think this will end up being a self reporting issue. I would not think that an apposing instituion would seek a ruling. Just my own opinion.

hopefan

funny thing is, like I said, the secretary may be the only one left to self report!!!!!
