Baker could really help MU. Your not going to win with just him, but he could be a very serviceable SLIAC inside help.

From the Hopefan "could help" dept.
Don't be suprised if J. Dressler doesn't play very valuable minutes in FU's big man rotation. I know that Hopefan is now chuckling. BUT, reports are John is 30 lbs. heavier and a lot more coordinated then two years ago. At 6'91/2 he is a difference maker on the defensive end and a definate shot blocker.

Coaches can watch from the stands. Summer league is good for the kids to work on their game. In some cases it is working on a new positions ie; Parker for FU. In most cases it's to see the newbies and let them get aquainted with the squad.

As a regular poster in the CCIW room whose team, of course, plays in a different summer league, I would say fcnews is right on when he says the main benefit of summer league is to help the incoming freshmen get acquainted with their new teammates/learn some plays.

Above quote from fcnews.

A kid can change dramatically in a year. When I went to Virginia in January of '06 to see my alma mater, Randolph-Macon, play a couple of games, one of them was against Guilford. They had a tall, skinny kid named Ben Strong who gave R-MC a little trouble and scored maybe 15 points. R-MC won thast game by a few points. When I went this past January Ben Strong was a totally different player. He was unstoppable at the beginning of the game, had over 20 points in the first half, and finished with 40. Guilford won that game, although R-MC hung tough until the end. The only problem I saw with Strong's game in '07 was that he was a little prone to fatigue, so the coach rested him frequently, and his shooting percentage went down in the 2nd half. As most of you probably know, Strong was named D3 player of the year for this past season.

I'm not saying Dressler is a Ben Strong calibre player, but I trust fcnews when he says a kid has improved. One more reason that Fontbonne has to be the SLIAC pre-season #1.

John is not in the same league with Strong. But, against teams like Webster with Hoggatt, John can play valuable minutes on the defensive side. He is not going to be a big scorer, but he will get you some offensive rebounds. FU has enough scorers for now. John will be making the trip to Europe in August, we will see how he progresses to that point.
FU's big man rotation will go 6'9, 6'8, 6'7, 6'6 and Fogerty at 6'5. I like that size in the SLIAC. FU will not be a six man team this season. Which means you get a much fresher dose of Fogerty, White, McCoy and Parker.

ok FC the 4 big men we're talking about are likely Storandt, Levette, Dressler, and the frosh from Seckman .  The trouble I see is that they all appear to be strictly pivot men on offense (unless Levette could move to a 4)- I'm not so sure that the wealth of numbers of those 4 will really impact flexibility in the other positions, except that Fogarty should never have to be the "big" guy on the court.

I think the flexibility comes from getting Parker back - with Fogarty being a 3-4, White  a 2-3-4 and Parker a 2-3, and having 3 relatively flexible guards in Branch, McCoy and Fournie, Fontbonne is pretty well set.   If Branch comes back and plays like he did in the first 15 games of the year, it's gold   (How do you stop fogarty and white from 20 feet in, Branch from the perimeter, and Parker penetrating like he does  -  all at once?)  However, if Branch and McCoy don't mature and throw up 25 shots a game at 30% with 8-10 turnovers, that's a lot of possesions that White and Fogarty and Parker don't see the ball.

BUT, you know my pet peeve - I still would like to see a "more" pure point guard - one who doesn't want to score like McCoy, and who handles better than Fournie  -  that individual would/could really bring this group together.
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

I see the big men in a two man rotation for the 4 and 5. The Pt. guard stop is looking brighter. Tell me what you think of Rapp thursday nite.

NEWS FLASH - Thursday's summer league games have been moved to Meremac C.C., because of scheduling issues at FU. Game times remain the same.

Thanks a million FC  -  would have been a tad upset if I went over to Fontbonne and found no games!!! :o

Just trying to be helpful to My Poster Buddies. Any news out of MacMurray.

pantherpride06

I'm told that MacMurray has hired an Athletic Director.  That's all I know.  I applied for the position and she told me it had been filled.  No news on the SID (which I applied for as well.)

As for me, I have two job options right now, Roger Williams University (Bristol, RI) or University of Puget Sound (Tacoma, WA)  I'll keep you posted.

You applied for AD? That takes some cajones. :)

Mac Attack II

New AD at MacMurray. Outstanding choice. Will bring stability, growth, and long term success to the Mac athletic program. New men's basketball coach will be announced within the week. Will be a terrific coach. Many applicants. MacMurray lost one of the best in Steve Hettinga, but was fortunate to land an outstanding replacement - and he will be on board weeks ahead of when Hettinga came to MacMurray last season. More good news - the schedule for 2007-2008 will be a good one, with Mac playing more CCIW teams. Good move. Tough financial times for small colleges like MacMurray, but hats off to the Mac administration for stepping up and doing what needed to be done to build on the momentum of last season's championship run. Four starters and the first three players off the bench will return, plus some solid recruits. Mac still needs a big kid or two that can defend the post and rebound - hopefully the new coach can make that happen. As everyone who watched MacMurray play last season, this is a team that is very dangerous - at home and on the road. Don't count them out.

Look for the names of the AD and the new coach to be released by MacMurray in the next few days. The future is bright. Go Highlanders!

Pat Coleman

Gee, thanks for the rhetoric. You can spend all that time glowing but can't drop a name?

The "I know something you don't know" posts really bug me.

From the last sentence in Mac Attack's post it sounds like MacMurray has not announced the names of the new AD and men's basketball coach, so I think it would be inappropriate for Mac Attack to do so in this forum. He has connections at the school and probably knows the names, but also knows it is not his place to reveal them at this time. He'll let us know when the time is right.

Yes, Mac Attack is occasionally long on rhetoric, but we appreciate his enthusiasm for MacMurray and support of SLIAC hoops.

As for pantherpride's job opportunities, I hope one of them comes through. We are rooting for you. And going to another conference will eliminate any conflict of interest that might have occured in a job with another SLIAC school.

Looking forward to hearing about the summer league activity that took place this evening. I couldn't make it. Had groceries to buy and grass to mow.

Pat Coleman

Many other people manage to do one or the other:

1) Provide lengthy rhetoric and names.
2) Hold off on both until an announcement is made.

People who do half and half are relatively rare.
