Fontbonne to Spalding  approx. 4 hrs.  260 miles
Greenville to Spalding  approx. 4 hrs.  246 miles
Webster to Spalding  approx. 4 hrs.  260 miles

The above distances cannot be correct. The drive from Webster to Greenville is approximately 55 miles. The figures above suggest it is only 14 miles.

Pat Coleman

They are correct, however. Remember it's driving distance, not as the crow flies.

No, it doesn't. The distance between Webster and Greenville is irrelevant for these purposes, because neither school's teams would travel past the other SLIAC school's campus to get to Louisville, KY. They take entirely different routes -- Webster takes I-64 all the way from St. Louis to Louisville, while (according to MapQuest) the best route for Greenville to take is Illinois 127 south to Nashville, IL, and then picking up eastbound I-64 from there.

That's why I prefaced my chart by saying that it was MapQuest's interpretation of these trips; those of us who are familiar with mapping software (cough Microsoft's Streets & Trips software cough Hope and Carthage cough) are aware that the routes chosen by the software employed by these sites are sometimes not the right ones.

My bad. I forgot that Greenville was on I-70 instead of I-64. Or perhaps more accurately, I forgot that we would take I-64 to Louisville, rather than I-70. Just keeping you on your toes. :D

Here's an interesting point regarding map software. When hopefan and I went to Salem for the Final Four in March, he calculted the distance using Google Maps and I did it using Mapquest. There was about a 15 mile difference between the two, though they gave the almost identical route. Google Maps, which gave the longer distance, was closer to hopefan's actual odometer reading. And you know what a big numbers guy hopefan is. He tracked it closely.

I just did it again, using my home address as the starting point and the street address of the Civic Center as the ending point. Mapquest says 686.55 miles, Google Maps says 710 miles. Yet the difference in the estimated driving time is only 3 minutes.

interesting that Maryville and Webster are playing up at Cornell and Coe on the same weekend....   nothing on the schedule seems to indicate that the games are at one site....  they just change opponents each night - the two Iowa schools are only 17 miles apart   -   wonder how it got set up, or if it was just by chance....

Could it be that they will travel together to save transportation costs? With the schools only 17 miles apart the travel might be arranged so the trip will require only one bus.

hopefan

I kind of wondered about the traveling together also - it just doesn't seem plausible, but on the other hand, there's never been a sign of UNFRIENDLY competition - both teams get good kids..........  Coach Rogers from Maryville is a Coe graduate - and Coe and Maryville played last year.

Maybe WUSID could help us out....

Also, no one has responded to when and where the summer league is scheduled- I'd enjoy getting to the gym to see the new faces....

Greetings to my fellow SLIAC Posters.  I'm back to Tacoma, Wash. after spending a week in none other than Greenville, Ill. at our annual Panther Academy Camp.  I met all the new basketball players for our team and things look very well for the 08-09 year.  I'll give you some more details later.  I also have some details on the 08-09 Schedule and I'll get that to you as soon as I know for sure.  I know the Panthers will play Soon-to-be NCAA I SIU-E.  We also will also drop NAIA McKendree.  That has some historical perspective behind it.

Like I said, once I get some more info on the team, I'll let you know.

We'll looking forward to the details on the '08-'09 Greenville Panthers.

It's so hard to wait for a new season -- practically 8 months from the championship weekend ending one season to the opening weekend of the following season.

I'm super excited about hearing how the Panthers will do this season!  Hopefully fcnews will be back on board for the 08-09 season!!!

Pride - I wouldn't miss this coming season for the world. FU welcomes Nolan Zoellner 6'4 combo 2-3 out of Washington, MO. Been waiting quite awhile for this one. Zoellner averaged 11 pts a game on a team that featured on of the areas top scorers in Scott Suggs.

We have been remiss in noting that current Fontbonne player Brian Fogerty and his family, as well as former SLIAC MVP Steve Bash's family, are from the town of Winfield - Winfield's final levee breached this morning at 5:30 AM (per St L post.on line), and massive flooding of Winfield seems imminent -  Please keep these families as well as all other Winfield residents in your thoughts and prayers.

Hopefan - Thanks for the comments about Fogerty. As of last night the family and he were OK. He's been sandbagging for weeks.

Good showing by the newest Griffin last night in the final summer league game. Nolan Zoellner went 5-6 from 3's, had 22 points and showed why he received so much late attention. Zoellner played on a high profile team for three years. Good competition and was noticed by coaches attending games to watch Scott Suggs. The 6'6 point guard out of Washington H.S. Nolan had an outstanding All Star game at the Westplex. His final decision game down to SEMO or FU.

This kid will be a fun one to watch. Incredible hops.

Fontbonne sounds like a D1 program these days. Lisch, this guy who come from a well respected program, Fogerty, Storandt, the other guy...wow....they are going to be tough.

Too bad it won't work out.

Sorry in advance FU
