Pat,

Here is why I believe Doane will not go D3.  They are in a small town and their facilities are not the best.  They would have a hard time competing without scholarships.  Hastings has been a powerhouse in a few sports with NAIA.  They do reside in a somewhat bigger town with new facilities.  I think they could compete in time at the D3 level.  It is encouraging that the three are exploring their options though.

Midland Lutheran in the same conference would also be a good candidate for D3 being near Omaha and having a nice basketball arena.  (However, I have not see their other facilities).

Just my take, I hope I am wrong with Doane and Hastings.

Fontbonne blows a 22 pt second half lead and loses by 1. Turnovers, Turnovers And Turnovers. EC never quit and shot lights out from 25ft. It's a battle to the end for tourney spots.

people you had to see it to believe it...  as good as I feel for the Eureka kids, I feel just as bad for the Fontbonne kids......  Will write it up tomorrow...BUT, what an effort by Eureka....

Good all-around game for Webster in a 97-80 win at MacMurray. The write up on the Webster website summarizes it very well.

A 21 point lead late in the game got cut to 13 due to some poor clock management -- not using the shot clock long enough before taking a shot, or forcing Mac to foul. Oherwise kudos to the coaches for a good game plan and the players for executing well.

Feelx like I've got a heck of a "Hang Over". Only I haven't had a drink in 8+ years. Last nite was just a completely draining experience and as big of an emotional let down as this poster has felt in sometime.

As I posted before all the credit goes to the EC players and their desire to win. Every kid of the bench hit a huge 3pter. It just kept raining and FU wasn't able to get a finger in the dam.

I'm sure EC_SID and Hopefan will give much more in depth details.

Three great performances were wasted by the Griffin's.

Sr. Brian Fogerty 23 pts. (11-12 ft) 17 rebs.
Sr. Justin Storandt 10 pts. (5-6 fg) 9 rebs.

And the kid who has to feel awful today, based on one play.
So. Chris Forrest 27 pts 8-11 (5-8 3pt) 6-6 from the line. And just unstoppable in the first half.

It's not the end of the world. But, boy it sure feels like it.

I will take my Blessings in another area of my life and try to look at it as just a game.

Prayers go out to Brian Fogerty and his entire family. Brian's grandmother had a major part of one lung removed earlier this week, due to Cancer. Get well soon young lady. She is a Huge FU fan.

There is a complete recap as always on our web site and a link to the same thing on the d3hoops scoreboard. It's it for me for now. I need some rest and will wait to see what Hopefan has to say.

Oh, 1 more thing. Chris Forrest officially has my vote (not that I have one that counts) for Newcomer of the Year. He is an amazing shooter.

Very nice recap EC_SID. It was nice to chat with you yesterday.

Agree with FC  -  great writeup by EC on the Eureka site, so I'll bypass my usual synopsis.....

Notes on a thriller:
EVERYONE that played contributed to EC's win.... ECSID has a misprint in his article - he credited EC's bench with 20 points - heck they had 40, outscoring Font's bench by 34 points!!!  And in a game like last night's, all 40 were critical...

EC's bench, Abbed, Rabbe, Sides and Leppard  6 for 9 from 3 point territory, 14 for 22 overall  -  unbelievable.  Rabbe had two critical 3's in the time frame when EC was making their final comeback, Leppart and Sides were totaly involved at the end of the game with steals and drives.  Starters Bell, Zasada, Kindred all had great games....

Fontbonne's start was equally amazing... at one point in time I had them at 19 for 24 from the field...Fogerty hit his first 5 shots, Forest hit 7 in a row after missing his first, Branch hit 4 of his first 5, Even rockputter Justin Storandt hit his first 4.  How did they lose?      They totally fell apart versus the press, and seemingly were having too much fun with their big lead.....   and the bench simply didn't spell the starters like the Eureka bench did.....  EC had 3 comebacks.... they were down big in the first half, but cut it to 12 at half time, then got way behind in the 2nd half, but cut it to 5 at 6 minutes, and then fell behind by 12 at 3:30 -    That's when the final magic began.
And Fontbonne just a horrible decision to throw the ball right to their basket on the last play - the most likely place that Eureka could score from if there was a slipup - and the slipup happened.

ECSID at one point in time had pointed out Frosh Jordan Kindred to us - very exciting player... But I also like Fr Murad Abbed - he played very well when I saw EC vs Maryville, and very well last night.  Frosh Andy Leppart, who almost seemed like a clone of Kindred, makes for a wonderful frosh guard 3some....

BIG games from now on... this game by itself doesn't change alot... if Font and Westmin win out, Fontbonne would still win the host role....  but with the parity in this conference, anything could happen

What exactly happened on that last play?

Font and Westmin can both win only up to the last day. Then they play each other.

Games seen by hopefan this calender year

EC at Maryville  MU wins by 5 fighting off a frantic EC comeback

Grinnell at Fontbonne  over 300 points and more fun than I've ever had at a game

Fontbonne at Webster  Double OT win for Webster

Fontbonne at Maryville  Font blows them out with Maryvilee's all time stupid loss of Steinke being the talk of the town

Maryville at Webster  one point game with 5 minutes left - Webster wins

Maryville at Westmin - Maryville hits incredible 3 pointer to go to OT, Westmin wins it

Fontbonne at Westmin - With the game tied, Fontbonne routs Westmin in final four minutes to give Westmin 1st loss in league

Webster at Greenville  -  Webster upsets Greenville as GC misses a tying 3 pointer at buzzer

Westmin at Webster  - Webster stuns Westmin by 2, pulling Westmin back to a tie for first with fontbonne

EC at Fontbonne - the miracle comeback of the year as EC erases a 12 point deficit with 3:30 to go to win at the buzzer.

I THINK I'VE FOUND SOME DARNED GOOD ENTERTAINMENT !!!!!!!!!!!!

Furbug..  here's the funny thing - somehow, I wasn't watching, I was looking at my program...  when I looked up, Kindred had the ball in layup position with no one near him  -   I asked around and got three stories - the ball definitely went into McCoy, seemingly slightly to the left of the basket - then either:

The ball deflected off his hands directly to Kindred on the right side of the hoop

or  the ball was hit out of his hands by the Eureka defender,

or he seemed to slip as the defender rushed him and actually lost the ball himself

ONE thing I will say, No one (in particular FC) suggested there was a foul on the play - it happened incredibly quickly - Font had ball out at 3.9 seconds and Kindred scored at 2.4 seconds.   Like I said, if they throw the ball ANYWHERE else, Eureka has to make a miracle long shot to win - as it was, they gave them an uncontested layup.

Hopefan,

Does the following work?

If Fontbonne wins out, they host
If Westminster wins out, they host
If Webster and Westminster both win out, Westminster hosts
If Greenville wins out, and Westminster wins all but Greenville, there is a tie between Westminster and Greenville

furbug

Something is funny. I thought I posted this but it did not show up. If it comes up twice, excuse it.

Hopefan, In that last few seconds situation, I have often wondered why teams inbound it at close range at all. They do that a lot, usually without the dire consequences you described, but why not have one or two players way down court and throw long. Even if they are defended, there should at the most be a struggle for the ball, and the clock has started when the first one touches it. The odds of a basket being scored in the 2 or 3 seconds is extremely remote. ???

Interesting call in yesterday's WU-Mac game -- one which probably seldom occurs in this fashion. Late in the game with Mac down double digits and trying to save time on the clock, and Webster back in half-court defense, when inbounding the ball Mac employed the "roll the balll up the floor before touching it" technique to keep the clock from starting. On one of those rolls the in-bounder rolled it very slowly and Farrid Coleman walked next to it almost to mid-court. Before Coleman reached down to pick up the ball a ref blows his whistle and puts his hand in the air with his fingers spread out indicating a five second in-bounds violation. I take it to mean that the five second rule requires the ball to be touched by a player, not just released from the hands of the peson inbounding the ball, within those five seconds.

Somone who knows the rules, please verify if this is correct.

hopefan

Yjack - that is correct, if you want to 'trust' my knowlege of the rules :D

Furbug  your 2nd and 3rd scenario are redundent - Westminster wins out, they host no matter what Webster does...

Yes if Greenville were to win out and Westmin loses only to greenville, Greenville and Westmin are tied, and everyone else has at least 4 losses.  Westmin and Greenville would have split, so the next tiebreaker is record vs other SLIAC teams beginning at top of standings  -  so how did each fare vs 3rd place, 4th place etc....

Of course, Maryville and Webster are  in it just as much as Greenville fontbonne and Westmin are....

And Finally, that's just what I was saying regarding the final pass  -  throw it ANYWHERE but near the basket....
