I choose not to (but you guys forced me to) relive the memory of getting torched by Davis at FU.  Dude would step across half court and launch it.  Not much you can do about that.  I think we still almost beat them...

If my memory serves right I saw him a few years ago at Show-Me's schooling Albert White.

Not upset AARH. Good information to know. I have been under the impression there where two Mabee Gymnasiums, Maybe at that time. Maybe the Mabee folks fashioned those particular words in the presentation. So now I know there are two Mabee Centers.

Do the other two have any religious affiliations?

Cartez Parker... My Dad and Coach Porter did everything possible to help that young man. In the end... You can't make a kid like school. Cartez is a welcome and frequent site on campus. Still has jets.

Trevor White. Our Mountain Man from Salem. He told Dad the 2nd week he was going home. Home sickness at it's worst. See the now Mrs. White was 3 years younger. Married at 20. Happy and has grizzly adam's beard. Gets to a few games each year. You could never pick him out. Went to work at the hospital were his folks worked. He had a hellva Sliac Tourney.

Kennard Davis. Just saw at Brian Grasle's superbowl party. Still would of had one year left. GPA no proble
. $2300 a problem. They purge a man that close to diploma over that amount? Come on. How many thousands had they already received from state and federal. But he was treated like every student. If you have never met him your missing something. Great man. Good father. Still can play. Had 36 against our own STL Pioneers.

Antonio Holland. Hired an agent immediately after the season. Went off to seek his fortunes in pro ball. Never heard from again. Entertaining. But not from this planet. Nice kid. Felt like a drive by siting.

Josh Branch. A topic not up for discussion. More this story then you know. Closed.

A walk down memory lane.

AARH - Please. Coach McKinney or Lee McKinney are your two choices. I know he's earned that respect.

I kind of liked Father Flannigan McKinney

Well d3hoops didn't get the story. But, will get the scoop.

FU's bus just left for Greenville. Dad wasn't on it. Dad was admitted last nite to St. Luke Hospital. Suffering from severe malnutrician (lost 7 lbs. in 9 days) and a collapsed lung. The streak comes to an end tonite. 50 years and 1391 straight. Two years at Cape Catholic have no records. NABC shows 1391.

He did not quit. Is body just failed him.

I don't know what the future of coaching for him holds. Won't have a clue till chemo is done in May.

I would like to thank Hopefan, Bunchtime, Yjak, D. Loyd, Distant observer, EC SID ( where ever you are), AC Slater, GC01 and Panther Pride (your turn friend). Folks it's been an amazing run and I appreciate this board.

All American Red head. As Yjak can tell ya, my Mom is a regular reader of this board. She has really enjoyed reading your posts thru this time. I'm sure your Vendetta has lift your spirits. Take a look in the mirror.

Everyone lurking thanks for your longtime support. And special thanks to our friend Coach MckFessell.

My purpose on this board is no longer needed. I doubt I see many future SLIAC games. The timing would have never been right. I just promised him 7 more days.

Good luck to all the teams. Safe travels to the fans. Hope put $2 on my horse to win. Please.

Thanks for the space. Denny.

Mr. Ypsi

Denny, so sad to hear the news.

Best of luck to him (and you and your mom) - here's hoping he is back where he belongs next season!  It's time to start a new 1391 game streak! ;)

Sorry to hear that dennis. There was never a vendetta on my part. I was just discussing the strengths and weaknesses of a coach. No different than saying mike martz was a great inavator but could not manage his timeouts. I thought that was a cheap shot on your part, but considering the circumstances, I understand. It is my hope that Coach Mckinney recovers and is back on the bench next year so I can critique him again, just like we do every other coach. I can't believe a true competitor would want it any other way.

Who knows, maybe the team will rally and "win three for the Macker" to make the tournament. Now that would be true drama! I for one, will be pulling for the Grifs and will keep wishing Coach Mac a speedy recovery.

Quote from: hopefan on February 15, 2011, 10:59:15 AMand this is obviously a top 30 level team in my mind

I don't think that IWU is a top thirty team. Close, but not quite there.

Ok for arguments sake.  What makes the CCIW so much stronger than a conference like the SLIAC.  Throwing out the WI schools where D3 schools are state schools and tutuion reflects as much.  Where do the IL schools keep digging up thier talent?  Wheaton I can gather from their city draw

What city? As WUH said, Wheaton is in a far western suburb ... and it draws most of its students (including basketball players) from out of state. The only CCIW school that really makes a concerted effort to recruit city players is the only city school in the league, North Park -- and NPU has to be extremely judicious about it, since most city players have neither the academic background nor the finances to get into NPU, much less master the coursework while playing basketball.

Quote from: metaljacket on February 15, 2011, 10:31:30 PM
to try to attempt the answer GC panther raised earlier on why the CCIW is so much better then the SLIAC...

Money! The SLIAC simply does not have any money. Many schools in the SLIAC cannot afford full time coaches, while teams in the CCIW have full time assistants. Obviously not all but some do. Most have full time SID's, not sure how many the SLIAC has but I would assume 1 or 2 if any. From what I could gather at Spalding, the coaches in the SLIAC also have other jobs to fill like SID, compliance, facilities, etc...

To go along with the money issue, if you were to look at the facilites it would be very apparent. I have been to some campuses in both leagues but not all. Take IWU for example which was brought up earlier. Their rec center is better then ANYTHING I have seen in the SLIAC. I believe Webster baseball plays at a minor league stadium but after that, the worst field I have been to in the CCIW is better than all the baseball feilds I have seen in the SLIAC.

Kids will go where the resources are and the CCIW has the resources. Also as someone mentioned earlier, reputation plays a big role in this. I bet most people on this board never even heard of Spalding before they joined the conference. But all of you have heard of North Park, Carthage, IWU, North Central...etc....

Money, reputation, and resources are why the CCIW is so superior

Everything is relative -- CCIW schools operate on a shoestring when compared to D1 and D2 schools, as many CCIW head coaches have to work a second job on campus (North Park's Paul Brenegan also coaches men's golf, for example) -- but metaljacket is essentially correct. The CCIW is no country club for coaches, but they have much more in the way of resources with which to work than do their SLIAC counterparts. Also, the CCIW has been around since 1946-47, and several of its members have been playing intercollegiate sports for a lot longer than that. It may not be a major player in terms of the media in northern and central Illinois and in southeastern Wisconsin, but its eight member schools are a known commodity as far as local high-school basketball coaches and players are concerned. And on the D3 level, the CCIW has had a lot of across-the-board national success ... not just in men's basketball, but in a lot of sports. In men's basketball, of course, it has the reputation of being one of the two or three top leagues in the entire country, and it has enjoyed that rep for a long time now.

So, yeah, metaljacket hit the nail on the head. Money, reputation, and resources are why the CCIW is superior to the SLIAC. But keep in mind that, as I said, those three things are all relative. The money, reputation, and resources of the CCIW are dwarfed by those of most scholarship leagues.

thoughts on Webster at Westmin..

Westminster led the whole game... 10 points at half... though could have been closer as Webster held for last shot, missed and Westmin fast broke down the floor to score at the buzzer..
In second half, Webster cut it to 3 twice, at 14 minutes, and again at 9 minutes... but could never get closer.. normal range was 8-10 points

Westmin disected Webster's zone with great passing... could not understand why Coach Bunch stayed with the zone for 30 minutes, got out of it a short while, and then went back to it...  the zone wasn't working, no confidence in his team's ability to play man agianst Westmin?

Only cody Bradfisch had a good game for Webster.. yet was on the bench for more time than expected.. 8 for 13 from field, 3 3's , 22points.... Trimble had what may have been his worst game of the season, very careless with the ball, some forced shots, 2 for 12 from the field....  he needed to take over in the last 5 minutes and could not... the boxscore on SLIAC.org credits Willie with 5 FGs and Cody with 5 FGs... if that's correct, Westmins water must be laced with something, because that is not what  saw, nor denoted in my scoresheet....Nick Jones is hurting big time, any contact seems to send him to the bench in pain... he's still helpful to have on the court, but he was hardly a part of the offense... and Scott Restoff is in a total funk, contributed little...  Moore missed some easy shots early, simply contributed too little to keep Webster in the game... Huskey worked hard, but Henderson's 10 minutes in the 2nd half was far more decisive (sorry to keep making that comparison)

Vislay was his usual 1 for 5 from 3's and I thought was going to be a factor in keeping Webster in the game if he kept shooting them.. but about the time I said that to Mr. Meeh, Vislay got hot and hit several 15 footers in a row... that really pulled Westmin ahead ... EVERYONE played well for Westmin.. as I said, great passing and patience against the zone just ate it up..  open shots lead to high % shooting....

Webster and Westmin now tied on top for hosting rights... if I interpret things right, Webster has the tiebreaker advantage with its sweep of Spalding, whereas Westmin only split with them...  But Webster must beat Greenville, and then face who knows what kind of emotion charged climate against fontbonne

Long phone conversation with Denny on the way home from Fulton... Coach McKinney's health is very poor and as an outsider, I feel the inevitable is near... my personal concerns shift to the health and welfare of Mrs. McKinney, Denny,  and the rest of the family...
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

Sorry to hear about Coach McKinney.  Thoughts and prayers going out to his family.  I hope he's able to fight through this.
