Denny ..no big deal regarding Alex Rowling, but Fontbonne's year end stats in the SLIAC.org site, which I am using for each of my team reviews, shows Rowling with 5 games played, 15 total minutes, 0 for 2 from the field, 1 for 2 from the line, and a couple of rebounds...

Yes I know Hopefan. Stat crew never took his name off Roster. So someone wore that number at sometime during the season. He did not play. Just clarifying. Not trying to change your opinion.

Greg I have no details on this. I was just told he would be playing next season. I hear he is a pretty good player. From the few summer league reports I got.

That's why I don't feel I have much to offer this board. And, Hopefan's post on last season, should explain why I definately do not need more SLIAC basketball for a while. Maybe in a couple of years. But, not in the near future.

One phantom appearance in Stat Crew by a nonexistent player is normal. In fact, many, if not most, Stat Crew operators resort to using phantom players in order to balance out the box score, or to fill a spot when they're under the gun in a game situation. But five phantom appearances by the same nonexistent player who is not listed on the roster is just poor work by the sports information department ... especially when the mistake hasn't been corrected six months after the end of the season. Same thing if there was a player who actually played those minutes and wore that uni but is an entirely different individual than the one listed.

Ideally, the coaching staff should be on top of that, too. But, given the circumstances surrounding Coach McKinney both before and after his death, it's understandable that Alex Rowling's phantom stat line wasn't a high priority for anybody on the Fontbonne coaching staff.

I realize that the SLIAC itself is the stat compiler and host. But the league office can only post what's being given to it by the member schools.

Greenville... first thought is, let's all hope Coach Barber is healthy and able to coach... great guy, love to talk hoops with him....  Greenville lost alot to graduation, in fact statistically, more than any other SLIAC team, losing over 50% of their scoring and rebounding... but Coach Barber's substitution patterns gave a number of people off the bench some significant minutes, so I really think returning players have the ability and experience to keep Greenville in a position to challenge for a SLIAC tourney position... Gone are 2nd team All Conference Obinna Agomo (12.4 ppg, 6.4 rpg), point guard Rashod Seaton (6.6 ppg, 79 assists), big man Andy Traeger, and tough nosed 2 guard/ back-up point Jonas McBride.... 4 starters, ... along with 3 other seniors off the bench... like I said, alot to lose....   Returning though, are 5 guys who can really play, and who would seem to make up a pretty decent nucleus... led by 2nd team all conference 6' 2" KJ Hilliard, (12.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg)  very athletic, great hops.. he'll likely be asked to play a bigger scoring role this year. 2 nice sized forwards come back, both saw good time off the bench on a regular basis.. 6'6" Rutgers Neece (nice shooter from the perimeter) and 6'4" Travis Garrison ( a banger around the basket)...  I think both of these guys will be able to progress from solid role players to starters this year... Markeith Brown impressed me when I saw him, but stats showed he was inconsistant... a good offensive player, goes to the basket hard, just need to settle down and play within himself...  Point could be handled by Alex Mumphard..only 5'6", but VERY quick.. the term 'waterbug' will be used often to describe him... he didn't get a lot of time last year, but he registered on my screen with that quickness.. the rest of the people returning have little or no experience, but I seem to remember hearing that last year's frosh class had a number of good players... Mumphard was the only frosh we saw on the varsity, so it's my guess Coach kept the group together on JV level.... those guys must contribute big this year.....

Congratulations go out to Blackburn U grad and former Greenville assistant coach Jamie young for being promoted from lead scout to assistant coach for the Boston Celitcs this season....if there is an NBA season this year.

Webster has their roster up. A bigger suprise then lack of size, Mike Siener is no longer the asst coach. It's now Westminster's Landon Kurz. Unusal part is Coach Siener is still at WU as Associate Head Coach for men's soccer.

Webster loses by far the hardest working assisant in the conference. I have know problem saying that he saw twice as many HS games as any other assistants every year. I know he saw Tyler Garner play 5 times his senior year. I've been told by parents that he is very good at presenting WU to a player and his family.

Big Loss!

Good Luck Mike.

The basketball team's loss is the soccer team's gain. Very pleased to see Coach Siener get a more significant title as Associate Head Coach. Perhaps at some point in the future it will no longer be "associate" and will just read "Head Coach". Here's a link to the article on the WU website from a month ago announcing the change: http://www.websterathletics.com/news/2011/8/22/MSOC_0822112553.aspx

Next up is MacMurray... Mac lost only 2 seniors, but they were two of the best players in the conference...first team All Conference CJ McClellan (my vote for conf POY) and Jerrel Robertson, a toughnosed to the basket forward... this kid not making All Conference was the coach's biggest oversite.....  Mac does return the conference Newcomer of the year in Dylan Burton.... possibly the most athletic kid in the conference returning to the SLIAC...  reminds me a little of Jake Vislay, and perhaps has a tendency to let his mind wander like Vislay did... if he plays an aggressive to the basket game, he will be the best player in the league by the time he is a junior/senior... Dylan, listen to your coach, play hard all the time, and your athleticism and skills will take you a long way.  Clint Lee returns at point.. quick tough nosed, pretty much unselfish.. he should be a leader.  The intersting thing about Mac is that the rest of the squad tests the question can a bunch of small school country boys grow and get better and really play against the Spaldings, Websters, Westmins, or will it just be too hard to catch up... Not sure that most of these guys could start on those teams, yet they come with a play tough attitude I like.. I'm talking about Brian Suckow ( a dark horse.... a beautiful stroke from 15-20 feet).. Luke Bishop,, a three point shooter who seemed more cold than hot, who needs to diversify his game; Cole Busch, Cody Best, Zach Ozee... all bangers around the hole....
I like the way they play, just not sure the level of play is good enough to guarantee top 4.  Big guy in the middle, Colton Pettyjohn, who was developing so nicely for SLIAC play, is not returning... a shame.   BIG QUESTION...  i have heard optimism that 2009-10 newcomer of the year Brady Slagle may return...  that would immediately vault Mac's review in my mind... very smooth guard who could play point or 2... would complement Lee well....Good coach.. real motivator in Coach Creal... he can keep the guys giving 100%.

Let's see Winfield, Salem, Herman, Willard and Mascoutah. Yep, I'm sure all small towns. They produced 5 country boys good enough to win three straight trips. So that should help you with your question. It's not the size of the town. But, the size of their heart and good hard work.

Hard to match Fontbonne's group from a couple years ago..... ;) ;)   Don't think Mac's kids are quite at that level (or even near that level)....  Coach Myers (Maryville retired) and I used to have the hypothetical argument often... At the SLIAC level do you want a kid who has played and been steady for a year or two, coming from a big school (let's say an 8 ppg kid); or do you want a kid from a class D school who was first team all conference....  Coach Myers loved the kids from down past his old stomping ground at Herculaneum, small schools...  I personally think that the big school competition level and experience is worth so much more, that I would opt for the big school kid over the All Star kid who hasn't really seen tough competition.   The Fontbonne group of 3 years ago was outstanding (though I'm not certain on the high schools attended by each)...   on the other hand, the much talked about group of frosh at Fontbonne from last year, most of who attended smaller schools west of St. Louis (ie sullivan, Union) have not yet played up to expectations (with the exception of the one big school kid from Eureka).  Sure, kids are going to develop during their four years, but it's my personal opinion that kids from Big School programs come in with an edge, a significant edge... the small school kid has to play catch-up....  Just an opinion, I don't need to see lists of successful small school kids... I know they exist....

Woke up this morning and thought Wow it's going to be a good day. You can offer examples and Hopefan will acknowledge a different set of views then his own.

So much for that wishful thinking. It was just an example of a case that differed from your premiss,!!!!!!!

"The Fontbonne group of 3 years ago was outstanding (though I'm not certain on the high schools attended by each)..."

I gave you the HS's? And, they weren't even HS All Star's. Except one a small set shooter from Salem. Who became a successful PG and jump shooter. Oh, and the last All American the SLIAC had was from Winfield, Mo. And this group won as Sophmores. No developing over four years.

And, I didn't give you a "list of successful small school players". It was the starters from one team. Just one example. And your rebutal was back to the same old, what about last years freshmen?

Brian, Patrick, Justin, Chad...... Like the song says  "Country boys can survive." And win against the big private and city school players.

So what your premisis states, if a rural player is not good enough to be recruited to the SLIAC Level, then I guess there is no place for them to play after HS.  ??? ??? ???

OK, Thanks for complimenting that group. I'll let you return to your Blog. I was right I have no relevence to post on here. It's all yours big guy.
