GC Panther 01

My bad Y Jack, somehow I read it as a 79-78 game

Denny McKinney

Yjak - Medely was 5-11, 5-6 from the line helped. Of his 3 turnovers, I know 2 were traveling calls. And, only 4 boards. Not to disagree. Was expecting more.

Webster with Huskey, Moore, Kuehl and even Jones are big enough.

I suppose 5-11 for a low post player isn't exactly heating it up. But no horrible.

When I was referring to bigger low post players at FU I was referring to bulk, not height. Your guys are hard to push around down there.

Denny McKinney

I see. We agree Yjak. We have the skinniest and widest post combo. If your trying to get around Ray you'll need to use turn signals.

Denny McKinney

I would like to put out a Blatant Plug. So turn the channel now.

Shout out to Big Ray Woods. The man passed the 30 lb lost mark. Hard work paying off Big Man. It's been a long road from 10 weeks in a boot.

Ray's endurance is no longer an issue. He'll beat ya down the floor. He's about 85% back. Got legs under him. Still pain going laterally. We won't see Ray at 100% this year. But in 2 weeks I'll take the Big Guy at 90%.

What rebounds he doesn't get, he usually gets a touch of it. He is not easily moved and foot work is way improved with conditiong. Soft hands and touch. Hit two 15 footers last nite.

I just want to say I'm proud of the man. A family. And, now on time to graduate next year. Props!

a mid SLIAC season comment

This will be an interesting first team All Conference selection... I hope the coaches take a real look at who is succeeding in the big games, who is really contributing to the game turnarounds, not who the pre season numbers said should be all conference, not who builds up numbers against the weak teams.....  if you are on a bottom 3 team, you better be darned good in virtually every game...  if you are on a top 6 team, I don't care what you did in the games against the bottom 3...  every poor game you have against the other top 5 should be a black mark... every time you disappear, don't come to play, should be a black mark... they offset the good games......   I picked a preseason first team on these pages... one of those players is out for the season with injury (Kindred)... another 2 are not hitting first team All Conference levels in my mind (Vislay, Moore)... another two are playing close to that level, though are not givens (McAfee, McClellan)...   One other is a definite to me... Trimble....    others to consider... Agomo, Hilliard, Zimmerman, Jones (too hot and cold for my liking), Tolson, Vislay   anyone else?  If you start with this 9, who do you eliminate...   if we want best 5 regardless of position.... I'll take MaAfee, McClellan, Trimble, Hilliard, and.... tough call....    lots more hoops to be played....  my thoughts could easily change based on 2nd half performance.....

So Westmin led Webster the whole 1st half, and increased the lead to 10 early in the 2nd half... Webster started to chip away and finally took the lead at 6:00, 44-43 with 2 Robbie Meeh Free throws............  Skylar Tolson hits a 3 and Westmin leads 46-44 at 4:35.......... Nick Jones makes 1 of 2 to make it 46-45..........Gilmour commits offensive foul at 4:11.... Meeh gets a hoop at 3:50 for webster up 47-46..   Gilmore scores at 3:10 for 48-47 westmin....   NOTE,, that's it for Westmin...
Huskey gets a hoop at 2:45 for 49-48, Tolson misses at 2:15, Webster misses two different shots but offensive rebounds twice and Trimble makes his move to the hole for up 3   51-48 at 1:18...  Gilmore miss and Trimble fouled makes 1 of 2 at 1:09 up four....  James misses and Nic Jones is fouled but misses 2 FT at 57 seconds.. then at 39 seconds, the Mallette play occurs where Vislay misses, Mallette tips in but called for foul and Tolson gets the T....; Webster makes 3 of 4 and it's over......

Thanks Magic... reading these pages has got to be humorous when looking at it from the outside!!!!!   Maybe I should go over and spice up the Liberty League pages by attempting to interpret box scores from 1000 miles away!!!!  oh, and another question regarding Union... do they still play in their old fieldhouse?   That place was classic with the raised wooden floor and the rafters..... always exciting to play there...

hopefan,
Union no longer plays in the old fieldhouse. In talking to former player Joe Cardany, he said when he played there from 1977-81 he played in the field house, but the raised wooden floor and rafters were gone as they gave the place a facelift around 1976. Put in one of those rubberized floors that was so popular back then. Now they play in a different building called the Viniar Athletic Centter which was named after a Union alumnus who contributed 3.2 million dollars to have it built. It was completed in the fall of 2004. David Viniar was on the Union team when they were having some great seasons. I believe Bill Carmody was the point guard when Viniar played there and you were still coaching at RPI. You probably wouldn't remember him because by his own admission he was a scrub and didn't get a lot of playing time. But it was his association with Union basketball and the lessons he learned there and carried with him that made his success in life possible. How successful was he? Just the Chief Financial Officer for Goldman Sachs. ;D 8-).

Here is a link to an article about his contribution :

And here is a link that shows a picture of the inside of the Viniar center which is apparently connected to one end of the old field house.

Oh and one more thing, in case you missed it I tried to answer your question about the Albany Christmas Tournament over on the mult-regional topics page.

Last but not least. Big weekend for your Engineers as they take on Hamilton tonight and Hobart tomorrow. The Hobart game will be a battle for first place and could find both teams undefeated in league play, if they take care of business tonight. Hobart has the easier game this evening as they play Vassar and should win by double digits. RPI will host Hamilton, and this is one of the teams that you have to stay ahead of, to claim a spot in the playoffs. Hopefully the Engineers won't be looking ahead to that Hobart game and they get it done tonight. And did you see who RPI defeated in their 3rd game of the season? Our old friend Paul Smith's. I think the team should get minus karma points for that piece of scheduling. :D ;D

Thanks Magic....Sorry SLIAC readers, Magic and I reminice about the 'old days'  :-[ :-[

Misters Carmody and Viniar have indeed gone to great success!! No, i don't remember Viniar as a player, but certainly Carmody was very good.....

Hey Hey Hey... just noticed, Eureka breaks into winners column last night, beating Lincoln Christian 74-71....  Heartiest Congrats!!!!

Busy day today, so can't go into depth..

Spalding has enough to beat Fontbonne, but it would be a great win for the Griffs and their playoff chances if they score the upset...

Blackburn will end Eureka's winning streak

Mac should have a stat builder vs prin

and Webster vs Greenville... looking at the matchups, should be a great game.... Webster stays in their zone, Gville doesn't shoot well from outside.... Webster wins....
great matchups... Trimble vs Seaton, Jones vs Hilliard, Moore/Meeh vs Agomo.......
a major difference that could favor Gville is coach Barber's liberal use of his bench... will be interesting to see if Coach Bunch starts to find more minutes for Edwards, Bradfish, whittingham

Maybe Coach Bunch realized that this year it only takes a strong six, to win.
