After last nites game I have bigger concerns regarding our reps chances for the conferences first NCAA win.

WC had no answer for Woods (7-7) or Thomas. These two were used in a rotation last nite. If Jones is out for WU, we need a draw without a dominate post player. Mac and GC don't have the bulk either.

Should be an exciting Tourney.

Mr. AARH - I have revised my post. I apologize that I missinterpreted your post. This is my error!

But, a +1K for you for bringing this story to all the basketball fans.

Thank you. I have revised/deleted mine as well.

Didn't Coach Winfield Graduate from Sumner like in '64. Like Wellston, Sumner had a tough time filling schedules back then. Alot of games against Venice, Madison, Lovejoy and Old Lincoln HS on the Eastside.

I think it was 65 that Lee graduated. He went right through ahead of what many consider the best HS team ever to come out of St. Louis, 1969 Sumner team. I remeber sitting in the old Kiel and watching them destroy a very good Denver Miller Kirkwood team in the state championship game. Harry Rogers was a big star as was 7 footer David Brent. Brent was an unbelievabloe athlete. Ran a 49 seocnd 440 yards. That is sick for a 7 footer. Went to Jacksonville Unviersity and scored 50 points on Artis Gilmore in the Varsity v Freshman scrimmage. Freshman in those days could not play on the varsity. Stayed one year and turned pro in the old ABA. Wasn't ready yet and faded into the past. I have no idea where he is now, if he is even alive. Brent is, in my opinion, the biggest waste of talent in the history of St. Louis basketball. Lee, on the other hand, didn't even make all PHL in high school, yet after playing two years at North Texas, he had a seven year NBA career. Lee would be the first to tell you he didn't have the talent in his whole body that David Brent had in his little finger, yet he made it and Brent didn't.

Oh the memories.

Harry Rogers was 6'7 and set scoring records at SLU and then played in the NBA. His younger brother Marshall, sat the bench in 69, but went on to lead the nation in scoring at Pan American University and then also played in the NBA. There were players on that team who hardly ever saw the court and yet were stars on the JUCO and small college level. What a team, and none (think Floyd) were recruited. The north side had that kind of talent and the Private schools weren't yet recruiting blacks like they did in the 70's and 80's (think Grawer), or today (think CBC and Chaminade), or being sweep up through the Deseg program (think Porter and Lafayette). It is nice for a senior citizen to reminiss like this on a cold winter day.

Note to self: never watch game tape day after tough loss. Does the Sliac really get services rendered for the $400 a crew they pay. Kudos to WC. They figured out there was no consequences for hammering the penetrator. No calls at one end and touch fouls at the other. This from a crew whose head has over 25 yrs and the other two have 10.

No wonder kids get frustrated on the floor. Suprised it doesn't happen more. Ugly. I'm now happy we got at least 8 ft's.

Question-  If your Webster who do you not want to finish 4 th?

allamericanredhead

we agree twice in the same day. the men's officiating in the SLIAC is the worst i have ever seen anywhere. i was hoping when good old boy ex commish got put out to pasture, his good ole boy buddy z would go with him. i am very disapointed the new commish hasn't done something. it is a joke and all comes down to who lines whose pocket.

is the head of officials still pulling his scam where you have to officiate for him free (he keeps your fee) in the summer time if you want sliac games? He says he is "evaluating" these officals and is why he keeps their money.

Most good officials have figured out his scam and want nothing to do with the SLIAC men. that is why the officiating is so poor.

How about in Coach M, is that how it was set up? there goes my karma, but i wonder why the new commish didn't put a stop to it. Is the same guy still appointing officals on the men's side as was under the previous commish? If so, there is the answer to why the officials in the SLIAC men are so poor.

Denny McKinney

Same head of officials you speak of. He still does MIAA assignments. I can't recall the last young official to come thru the SLIAC. Almost all have been calling games since Dad was at Mo Bapt. That is why there is history effecting out comes. Not sure if the summer camp evaluation system is still in effect.

Ron Hoover who handles the womans side does a very good job of bringing along new faces.

But, on this page we are not suppose to talk about refs. They have never determined the out come of a game and have no bias.

Shot from the past  AARH. Do you remember legendary HS ref Ed Osieck. Kicked my Mom out of one game. My first summed job was pricing inventory at his sporting goods store on Main St in Old Downtown St. Charles. That hair, his walk Nd he had to be calling games into his 70's.

allamericanredhead

no, don't recall that officials name. the one i remember who was around for years was ray cliffe. was the fb coach at Cleveland forever. three man crews have kept many of the oldtimers around. don't know if that is good or bad.

wonder if your mom and dad hold the area record for husband/wife combined ejections :) been there. my better half was an official. how i knew about z's summer time scam.

Denny McKinney

Not sure about the team record. But, Dad has spent some time listening from the locker room. A game at Anderson about 10 yrs ago, he and a player were gone in the first 45 seconds. One newspaper writer in Paragould, Ark referred to him as the "Billy Martin of Basketball". z was at last home game with a couple of Buddies, asked Mom after game how she was doing and she said fine but your officials are horrible. He said He thought they did a great job.

Did your wife work any of z's summer camp games at FC?

Wrong gender, but i know way to smart to be z's summer time slave.

Denny McKinney

Gotcha. Slaton had him on the radio last week and used HOF and Legend in the same sentence to describe z. I had to pull over and throw up.

You knew Jerry and Terry Pollard played for Dad. Jerry I see doing some big time NCAA games on TV.

allamericanredhead

was terry pollard doing hs games in the mid 80's.was he from the troy/bowling green area? i remember when ed hightower was doing hs in the early 80's.
