Quote from: hopefan on February 21, 2012, 01:13:28 PMDidn't realize at first what FC was talking about regarding Spalding and IWC, then got it... IWC being Iowa Wesleyan....  obviously discussing playing their two games at a midway point so that neither school has to travel that whole distance... assuming they would set it up each time when they were playing Webster or Fontbonne,  like a Friday/Saturday, so that each school would only have to travel to St Louis twice....  SLIAC scheduling would have to help out........  I'd have to think the crowds for those matchups between Spalding and Iowa Wez will be dreadful, even by SLIAC standards... likely only traveling family and a couple of diehard SLIAC fans would be in attendance.

You're probably right, but I'd like to think that if you scheduled Spalding vs. Iowa Wesleyan as the opener of a doubleheader in which the Fontbonne men or the Webster men played in the nightcap (depending upon which gym SU and IWC were using), you'd get some early arrivers from the host school's fan base, particularly if SU or IWC (or both) were competitive within the SLIAC that year and the game therefore meant something to the host school in terms of league standings.

At any rate, I think it's a commendable solution to what might otherwise be a difficult travel situation, and I applaud Fontbonne and Webster for being open to the idea of hosting those games.

Greg that might be tough to plan a doubleheader with the womens games included. Four games would be tough on the host school.

When I talked of doubleheader, I was thinking Iowa Wez and Spalding play Friday, Iowa Wez plays Font at Font on Saturday when Spalding plays Webster on satuday....  a month or 2 later, they do it again, now Iowa Wez vs Webster, and Spalding plays Font....
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

Gregory Sager

Yeah, that's definitely less likely to draw fans than a doubleheader situation would provide.

Back to Back games? No way. Then your putting two teams at definate competitive disadvantage to the rest of the league. IWC will probably play a Saturday/Tuesday schedule similar to what SU does now. The conference university presidents voted to accept them, now they have to pony up to make it a level playing field. I personally don't understand the decision. And, understand why the former men's coach at IWC made his decision. I can see this turning into another Lincoln Christian situation.

Someone needs to change SLIAC site quick. Eureka College JV @ MacMurray is not appropriate. Congrats to Coach Creal and his squad.

Which decision? IWC's decision to join D3, or IWC's decision to join the SLIAC?

Based upon what I've seen of those two schools, I think that you're comparing apples to oranges, Denny.

Sorry Greg. I was refering to the universities presidents decision to admit IWC. The comparison was not between the schools. I was refering to the chance after one year they decide it is not feasible. IMHO

SLIACFAN

Wow am I glad I went to the Eureka Mac game tonight! Hard fought by both teams the whole night, and yes Eureka played their starters throughout the whole game. The cheering section at Mac is definitely a home court advantage, they were loud the entire game! Eureka ends up going up by 6 at half on a deep 3 at the buzzard. But Mac comes out in the 2nd half full of energy. They started running a high-low game with Whitlock and Busch and it couldn't be stopped, as it produced open looks for everyone on the court. Now to the tournament,  I can't wait! Eureka vs Westminster then Mac vs Webster. Two games that are bound to be thrillers! Thursday needs to get here already!

hopefan

I share your excitement SLIACfan... one need only look at the matchups, and the fact that the same teams played each other on Saturday resulting in 2 OT games., to have great expectations... let's hope that the same kind of thrilling endings occur in all 3 games Thursday and Saturday!.... as well as hoping that whoever wins the conference gets an assignment as close as possible to their home, so that the supporting cast, families, student bodies, and peripheral fan base can experience an NCAA Tournament weekend without having to travel 300 or 400 miles and spending significant $.

Mac really took care of business down the stretch vs Eureka.... won it in the last 5-7 minutes....

Whitlock is making a late challenge for frosh of the year honors vs Verdis Lee of Westmin... if the Award exists, I'd be inclined to let them share it....

I agree with something YJack said to me... I'm sure Webster would rather be preparing for Greenville than Mac.   and Westmin vs Eureka.. interesting... virtually a 5 on 5 game as neither team expects much from the bench.. and much is equal, until you get into the middle... if Kelsey Weymuth can stop Mark Lessen, Advantage Westmin...

I believe the conference awards a "Newcomer of the Year", open to anyone playing their first year in the conference regardless of class. Chris Forrest of Fontbonne was the last upperclassman to win it in '08-'09.

WU FAN

The rule was changed in the last few years. In order to receive Newcomer of the Year now you must be a "First-year collegiate player". Knocks out a lot of players who are new to the sliac but are transfers.

buncheriffic

Wow Bunch hammered Fontbonne again last night!

I can't remember the last time Webster lost to Fontbonne???? Any idea how many recruiting classes have gone through FU with a goose egg against the Gorloks??

Thanks for the clarification.
