Dear Santa,
All I want for Christmas is a couple of knowledgeable SLIAC fans who would post on this site to add their point of view as to what they see, and would post regularly, more often than once every two weeks.  It would be nice if these posters had origins dispersed among most of the schools, particularly Spalding, Eureka, Mac, and Westminster, so that readers could be privy to what is going on in the basketball programs..
Thank you, and regards to Mrs. Santa,
                                                                                    Hopefan

PS   a new chainsaw would be nice.. Mine refuses to run...

Readers, I wonder if I'm asking for too much?

You would know better than I, because I don't look at too many of the posting boards. However, it seems to me that activity is down on these boards, including the two other boards I read (or used to read) with regularity -- ODAC in the South Region and UAA in the Multi-Regional topics. There were a number of conference games in the ODAC last Saturday, including an important Virginia Wesleyan vs Guilford matchup. Both schools have regular contributors to that board. After that game there were zero posts. As for the UAA, I have no idea what's happened there.

Maybe we need to learn about this Tweetin' stuff ??? ??? ;D

What boggles me is that since I posted the writeups about the weekend activity yesterday, there have been exactly 300 viewings of the SLIAC room... and what I wrote wasn't either nice enough OR caustic enough to generate a single response.... not even a CCIW poster jumped on me for doing the comparative scores thing with Westmin and Coe..!!!!

With finals wrapping up on campus Eureka starts it's winter break with a trip down to sunny  8-) Texas to play University of Texas Pan American.  I believe the team is flying down which beats the heck out of a 20hr bus ride.  UTPA is 2-7 on the year losing most recently to University of Texas Arlington and Texas State.  Looked at the roster and was suprised to see 4 players on the team from Illinois

After the trip to Texas Eureka makes it's way back to Illinois to play SIU - Edwardsville.  UTPA beat SIUE by 11 in November so it will be interesting to see how Eureka does vs both teams.

An inside source let me know that Lessen could and should be ready to play tomorrow vs UTPA.  Hopefully the recent time off has allowed for Fristch and Misuraca to heal as well.  I believe Rivera will miss tomorrow's game as well for disciplinary reasons...this should be the last game he misses if i'm not mistaken.

I'd like to see Eureka keep it competitive in these 2 games to give them a little MoJo heading into the 2nd half of the season and more importantly the bulk of the conference scheudule.

The UAA board has mostly been a ghost town for most of the time I have had a login.  Unfortunately, the Brandeis superfan is no longer around.  I would probably comment more if the CCIW boards did not cover the CCIW-Washington University match-ups so extensively.  But even the CCIW board activity seems way down this year.

If Lessen, Fritsch Misuraca are back, and assumedly Kindred back from illness, the Riviera loss alone would not be critical... Still D1 is D1; I don't have expectations of winns.. but if the score can be close enough to keep the regulars playing most of the minutes, it will be a good experience

Dang, can you imagine having to make that drive?  Texas Pan Am that's WAAAAAY down there...

Last season, I followed your impassioned plea with a response suggesting that you must live with what you have and the number and frequency of posts jumped significantly.  I am not taking credit for the jump, but just in case...

one of the interesting things on the Massey Ratings site is that it predicts winners and a score...for instance, it predicts tonight's Augie at Fontbonne game to be an 89-59 win for Augie...   this could make a potential blow out a lot more fun to watch in one's mind...ok here's the opening toss, with Fontbonne leading 30-0.. come on augie, catch 'em!!!! ;D ;D ;D.. let's see, would I have the nerve to put $100 out there on Fontbonne +30????

UTPA 49-39 at the half--went on a run last two minutes of the 1st.

Despite being 2-7, UTPA isn't awful--I watched them give a very good Bradley team a game for most of that contest.

This is very encouraging for EC.  Lessen appears to playing well and we're hitting from the outside (6-9 from three).

I cross Wydown last night to watch a few minutes of Fontbonne-Augustana and I have a few quick thoughts based on those few minutes:

-Coach Schaeffer is responsible for both basketball and golf, so his coaching season begins with new student orientation and ends with commencement.  Wow!

-I like Woods.  Greenlee had a good game against Washington University, but Woods needs to start and play more.  Woods and Stephens on the floor together may have worked better against Augie.

-Fontbonne desperately needs someone other than Gentry to run the offense.

-I would love to hear the decision to run the full-court press explained.  That was never going to work against the CCIW and will not work against the SLIAC.  Fontbonne forced two turnovers on the inbounds pass but struggled to inbound the ball and gave the ball back both times.

-Fontbonne lacked energy and conviction.  Fontbonne conceded almost every last loose ball.

-I love Brandon Kunz.

-Overall, a young team that will eventually (hopefully) make better decisions.

A couple of remarks to comment on WUH's take on things last night at Fontbonne.

Colton Woods had not dressed for several games due to injury, and looking at box scores saw very limited time on the road the last several games... last night was the first serious time he saw, and wow, I was also impressed.. I find it very significant that senior forward Eric Hamilton was NOT dressed, and I did not notice him on the bench.. this could signify a changing of the guard, moving even more to the frosh...Stevens Greenlee and Woods are a fantastic nucleus of youthful forward/middle types at the SLIAC level.. these guys have the potential of being as good as any 6'4"-6'6" players currently in the SLIAC.. do they match the strength or skills of the next level (Wash U/CCIW ).. no ... but against 'Div 4' level, they will be players.

The same unfortunately holds for Gentry.. he was awful last night against stronger better competition.. but against SLIAC level guards, he's quicker, more maneuverable, and has had success.. but like WUH, I don't know that I agree he is optimum for leading an offense that is made up primarily of freshmen... there is so much standing around by the offense.. they call motion, and I ask myself, "where?" That will be an interesting Coach's call over the next 2 and a half years...

The full court pressure... well, totally useless against an Augie, but against SLIAC, could be far more productive...

I totally TOTALLY disagree with your statement about Fontbonne lacking energy and conviction....They got beat up physically.. augie beats up CCIW teams physically.. but I thought Fontbonne played VERY hard down to the last possession... Compared to the last couple of seasons at Fontbonne, this was night and day....Greenlee, Stevens,  Woods, Rucker continually attempted to go to the basket .. that will win in the SLIAC...My thought.. I love the frosh.. if nothing but frosh played the rest of the year, I'd be happy...Dorhauer and Welch have shown they can shoot the 3, Carrell, while not a shooter, could become a solid point....That's 7 frosh right there, and not mentioning Jake Martin who is out with injury but who could develop into a dominant low post guy over time...

Better decisions... well, I should keep quiet... but the best decision could be made by sticking with the frosh... I will absolutely be thrilled if this group works out over time....

Incidentally.. just noticed... former SLIAC personal favorite Maryville has started this season at 8-1 in D2... only loss was by 4 points...No, I will not go D2, but congrats to the Saints....

I said that Maryville was going to struggle to make the transition to Division II in most every sport.  And, it looked that way early on, but I am happy to admit that I was wrong.

I would agree that they worked hard.  Let me walk back what I said and just say that it comes down to making good decisions and working smart.

I do think Fontbonne fans have reason to be excited.  I would like to know what the anti-McKinney poster from two years ago thinks about the new coach and new look Griffins.
