Eureka beats Concordia-Chicago. Did anyone see the game? I saw the second half of Concordia vs Nebraska Wesleyan on the opening weekend of the season. Concordia was not a very good shooting team that night but they employed a pressing defense on Neb Wes inbounds plays after made baskets. It helped them cut a 21 point halftime deficit to 10 several times but couldn't get any closer, eventually losing by over 20. Just wondering if Concordia looked the same against Eureka.

Yeah, they were not a very good offensive team at all, but EC kept up a hard pressure defense for most of the first half that CUC had no answer for. Their paint defense wasn't good, either-- we were able to play a lot of high/low early with Lessen and get him to the block.  Kindred was his usual aggressive self and knocked down a couple of nice 3s. Our starting five are finally looking healthy and playing on the same page.  Coming close to knocking off SIUE and dominating CUC I think bodes well for the rest of the conference season.

I was going to go into a lengthy first semester grading system for the SLIAC teams, but when I thought about it, it really isn't necessary, because as we enter into the holidays, just about everyone is meeting the expectations I set forth prior to the beginning of the season...

The top four still appear to be the top four... Westmin, Mac, Spalding, and Eureka...  Westmin has the best overall record at 7-2 and the close wins over CCIW Elmhurst and Mac are impressive, but not significant enough to separate them from the rest...  Mac, Spalding, and Eureka are all sub 500, but that's due to a very tough non conference schedule for Mac and Spalding, and a brutal string of injuries and other personnel factors for Eureka.  Spalding's 40 point win over Eureka is intimidating on the surface, but Eureka was as low as you could go with players out or injured at that point.  I don't think any of the top four have established a clear separation....  But some close losses to very good teams show just how far the conference has come..Spalding loses to Transy by 1 and To T. More in 2 ots; Westmin loses to D2 Rolla by 3; Mac loses close to Augie and McKendree and goes to the last minute at Westmin; Eureka goes to the last possession with D1 SIUE.. all impressive.
Webster remains the wild card, and so far just haven't shown the level of play that could get them into the top 4.. nice win early over Asbury, but last 3 games have been disappointing losing big to Wash U at home, badly at Elmhurst (note Westmin beat Elmhurst), and losing down at Rust, a team they beat easily early on..
Greenville has been disappointing... losing both games of their tourney and getting crushed at home by Webster... the signs were there when I came away from their game with Prin more impressed with Prin's scrappiness than anything I saw from Greenville.
Fontbonne's record at 1-7 is disappointing, but don't be fooled.. the frosh are getting 70% of the minutes, and only a pretty difficult schedule has kept Fontbonne out of the win column more than they have been... I'm thinking they could very well challenge Greenville and Webster in their matchups....
After impressing me vs Greenville and losing to Millikin by only 10, Prin has really fallen flat, getting crushed 3 in a row... BUT... I still think they can beat Blackburn, who simply haven't shown anything....

Mac hosts Wash U tonight... good luck to the Highlanders, this game could be interesting if Dylan Burton can contribute... still the solid style of Wash U may be a little more than Mac can handle... and will Clayton Whitlock again get pushed around by stronger big men in the middle...

I rented the on-campus WeCar and took the afternoon off to get to the game to get to Jacksonville in time for the game.  This will be the farthest we have ever ventured to watch the Bears play a SLIAC school.  The previous record was 0.7 miles.

Ideas for dinner in historic Jacksonville?

I ate at Mulligans on the square.. good burger/fries.. relatively small sports bar...  when you enter the square (following 267) Mulligans was all the way around it at about 8:00  ...  There was another place recommended to me that is on the right just after you enter the square, but it was closed on a Sunday noon.. don't remember the name....incidentally, keep your eye on the roads...that's a pretty desolate ride, and my cell wouldn't pick up a signal for a part of the trip...if it does snow, it could get messy....

I had planned to call the Athletic Department but between an afternoon Tweet inviting people to listen to the audio feed and a colleague from Godfrey who was sure the highways were clear, we left as planned.  My mistake.  The highways in Macoupin County were covered in ice, so we turned around at about the halfway point.  Unfortunately, it does not look like that game will be rescheduled.

ahhh WUH.... that's too bad.....At least you didn't go the whole way only to find the doors locked....

Well, good bonding time with your wife.... ;D

On the BRIGHT side!!!   Fontbonne beats Mt St Vincent down in Florida, 79-73   the box score is up on the Mt St Vincent site and provides the surprising news that the star of the game was little used Andrew Chism....  now I know I've been pushing hard for the frosh, but this is a feel good story.. Chism is a junior, saw a lot of time last year as a 6th man... but with 3 frosh guards and Greg Gentry getting most of the time at guard, Chism seemed to be on the court this season only as an afterthought...he had 37 points in 8 games...but he goes for 26 last night, and would have hit 30 but for a poor night from the foul line... I pictured this guy hanging it up for second semester, but perseverance certainly paid off...A great Christmas present for the Chism family who always seem to be at Fontbonne games supporting Andrew...
Also with a big game was frosh Jared Greenlee with a double-double 15 points 11 boards.....

Fontbonne plays their 2nd game in the Daytona Shootout this afternoon vs Ogelthorpe...  dang, I gotta find my copy of 'Slapshot'....

I was actually in a crowd scene in Slap Shot. A high school buddy and I went down to the Onondaga County War Memorial in Syracuse and sat in the crowd while they filmed the sequence where the Charlestown Chiefs play the Hyannisport Presidents. I've never been able to spot myself, though.

Someday I would love to own either a Tim "Doctor Hook" McCracken or an Ogie Ogilthorpe Syracuse Bulldogs sweater.
