Incidentally, Spalding clobbers Rivier, a small NE D3 school, down in Florida... let's hope they get a more worthwhile game in their next matchup....

When you said "a small NE D3 school" I wasn't sure if you meant Nebraska or New England. Since it's in New Hampshire, I now know what you meant.

;D  not too many small D3 schools in Nebraska  ;D

Fontbonne or Lindenwood on Wednesday?

Spalding misses an opportunity to put a feather in the SLIAC cap, losing to a solid Dickinson team 73-67... they do it by going 1-18 from 3 point, including 1-8 from DeWhon McAfee....   this over reliance on 3 point shooting, and McAfee, mystifies me when they seem to have so much other talent on the court... that kind of performance will NOT win games against the other contenders in the SLIAC.....  they would seem to win many matchups all over the court, and have great depth.. why rely on one guy....

Interesting scheduling variance gives SLIAC fans (well, at least me and likely YJAK) a double dose of hoops..

On Tuesday Jan 8, for a reason unknown to me, the Mac at Webster games have been moved up 2 hours... the ladies play at 4:00 and the men at 6:00... it will be easy to hustle up to Fontbonne afterwards and catch most of the men's game that could be equally important to the standings, Eureka at Fontbonne...

Really looking forward to the Westminster at Fontbonne matchup tomorrow night... If Fontbonne can show their Florida trip performance was for real, and get a home court win, the SLIAC race is going to be SO GOOD!!!  Just as important is the Spalding at Westmin game Saturday, but let's not get ahead of ourselves...
Certainly Fontbonne goes into the game with Westmin as a decided underdog.. before their two wins down south, the vegas oddsmakers would have been happy to offer up an 18 point margin.. but now, well let's mark that down to 12 points...  What does Fontbonne have to do to upset the Jays?
1)  westmin will throw the attacking half court trap at Fontbonne, so much depends on Greg Gentry making good decisions, not forcing his way through traps, getting the ball up the court to the open man with crisp passing.. equally important the fontbonne forwards have to come to the ball, catch, turn, and attack to the basket off the dribble or to the cutter...  delay, and turnovers will result
2) Fontbonne size.. fonbonne has a big size advantage with their frosh front line, they need to attack the hoop... Fontbonne WILL NOT WIN THE GAME WITH 3 POINT SHOOTING..
3) unfortunately by going big, Fontbonne will have some defensive mismatches.. they can't let Westmin run, and they have to defend the guard oriented Westmin offense.. DEFEND the PERIMETER.. hand in the face on 3 pointers... help and recover....

Dang, I must have been a coach sometime in the past.... ;D ;D ;D

Wash-U plays at MacMurray tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon at 3:00.  Yours truly and Wash-U SID Chris Mitchell will have an audio broadcast of the game, that will begin at 2:30 with the Bears Den Pre-Game Show.  We are having an extended pre-game show to include a general preview of the UAA men's and women's races.

Go to bearsports.wustl.edu and click on the "Bear Sports Network" link on the right side of the frontpage.  From there, select our live broadcast.

Should be an interesting game.  Wash-U is #9 and 9-1, and Mac is 4-5 but its losses have come against teams with .500 or better records:  Sewanee (5-2), Wartburg (5-5), Westminster (8-2), McKendree (6-4), and Augustana (10-1).  Mac only trailed Augie by 3 at halftime before losing by 12, and the Highlanders have four players that average in double-figure scoring.  Wash-U has 3 players in double-figures, and one at 9.9 ppg.

This game could unfold in similar fashion to the Wash-U women's game with Southwestern this past Saturday; a hard-fought battle all the way through.  Hope you get a chance to join us!

evidently the game is not starting until 3:30.... announcers just filling time right now....at 3:25

Well now I get it.. it's on some kind of delay... half time score is up on D3hoops scoreboard, but audio isn't midway thru the 1st half...   Wash U up 12 at half time....

They should have quit then....  very disappointing... especially if rooting for Fontbonne the underdog.... Fontbonne was 7 for 22 from the line with 2 minutes left... one of their 4 or 5 point guards have got to start making good decisions on a consistent basis... one or 2 very good plays doesn't create an allowance for 3 or 4 BAD plays... And Fontbonne never went to a big lineup as I hoped...  very good first half effort though, holding Westmin to 22....

Looking forward to Spalding at Westmin on Saturday

Webster beat badly by D2 Lindenwood... more concerning is absence of Aaron Griffin and Dietrich Sooter from Webster lineup....  Illness?  Injury?  2nd semester blues?    Kills their depth if the absences are more than tonight....

AND.. what's going on with Greenville... While I've been preaching that their winning record was a mirage due to the weak non conference schedule, getting trounced by Dominican yesterday is a very bad sign.....and there are significant lineup changes too.. transfer Dan Anderson, who had been their leading scorer, doesn't play... Melzer and Rollins, who had been starting, get 7 and 2 minutes respectively....Seems like Coach Barber is really searching for answers.. leading into conference, it's a bad time to have to do that....

I saw the first half of the Dominican/Luther game opening weekend in Nov. Luther had some tall players and went out to a comfortable halftime lead. Always hard for me to evaluate teams, especially early in the season, but Dominican looked like a typical SLIAC team. Would have thought Greenville could hang with them.
